Why nerf spell damage

What was so broken about spell damage that lead to them nerfing it to 60% or whatever it is? I wasn’t around back then so I really don’t know…

Were casters just so OP compared to melee when it really came down to it?

It just seems really harsh to wizards who have little else going for them than spell damage.

unmitigated spell damage is extremely high compared to player hp in every single era except for top end velious gearing

Prolly cuz wizards can one shot people with ice comet while melee in classic are hitting you for 19 damage.

It depends how you define best. For example ganking ransoms
leveling up or fighting mobs wizards never stop being good.

Big shit storm battles with aggressive prepared enemies you might get a kill then be OOM and run away lame.

That’s what I mean by the way things shift with dragon geared kunark melees and moreso with velious, in favor of the melee.

But you’re right I don’t play enough, tho I think in this case it’s more about what we mean by best.

Speaking as someone that tried to lvl a wizard on red after it was SUPER topheavy with fully velious raid geared melee. Let me just say I can fully attest to this. I felt completely hopeless lol. Speaking as someone that tried to lvl a wizard on red after it was SUPER topheavy with fully velious raid geared melee. Let me just say I can fully attest to this. I felt completely hopeless lol. On the rare occasion I ran into someone that wasn't geared to the fucking teeth I had some good fights but that didn't happen often.

It is the same trying to fight against a geared caster on an ungeared melee too though. Toe to toed my 50s warrior against a geared druid (without DS!) and even in these favourable conditions the war didn’t really stand a chance.

Top Velious gear is very good gear.

Would prefer a pvp server without this kind of gear, wizard pics, vp, etc. maybe just classic or smaller for a concentrated population.

Beastagor + Miguel smoked Gongshow and that Necros name I don't remember when they both had the vulak dispell staffs + every other treasure they got along the way. If wizard nukes were full damage it would of been a serious beat down

Man pvp play format slathar and salem were players the rest of us were just gaming at the time. It did kind of sucked that everyone went blue and joined up in one guild to kill every raid mob because no matter what the end goal is chasing a pixel high for 95% of the people. I hope those guys are putting pvp bad asses on their CV for future work experiences.

Wizards are good in high numbers so you can 1-shot people with coordinated Lures. Otherwise they aren't good vs geared people. In Velious they are garbage in typical skirmish situations.
