hey
Connect to the internet thru cable modem. when i first turn on the computer
the LAN connects thru ethernet. However, sometimes the broadband
connection will connect thru WAN and then EQ wil disconnect and LD
the character.
So i have to activate/enable both to avoid this.

which is better and how do i make it default all internet connections.
thx for helping out a tech newbie......

If it's Comcast, that's your first problem to deal with.

Playing on a laptop?

You can turn off your WAN on the laptop/computer so you only use the LAN/cabled connection. If you have a choice and don't mind using a cable, always go with that option. A good wireless router is a rare find and even if you stumble upon a good one you should always favor the cat5 cable unless convenience and portability are a must have.

I right clicked the WAN connection and dont see the option to "turn it off"
it does offer enabling disabling but the computer seems to randomly enable
it which disconnects EQ.

i am cable connected not wireless. i did need to use wireless once when
the cable failed and since that time the computer seems to jockey the
LAN and WAN

XP never really selected the best connection right. You can try to set the metric of the ethernet adapter to be lower (higher priority) than the wireless adapter. this way it will try to use the LAN if its plugged in first, otherwise it will default to the wireless.

copied from micrsoft support (I don't have an XP machine nearby):

To change the interface metric, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl , and then click OK.

The available connections appear in the LAN and High-Speed Internet section of the Network Connections window.
2. Right-click the network adapter that you want to change, click Properties, and then click the General tab.
3. In the This connection uses the following items box, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Then, click Properties.
4. In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
5. On the IP Settings tab, click to clear the Automatic metric check box. Then, type a value in the Interface metric box.

Do this for the both the LAN adapter and then the Wireless adapter. I put a 1 in for the metric on the LAN adapter and usually a 5 on the wireless adapter. You choose each adapter in step 2.
