Distraction, memories of the Cold War, invasion in Europe for the first time in many years.

We don't freak out over places like Syria and Yemen partly because they exist in practically a constant state of war over there. Burma is the same - perpetual conflict. We become desensitized to it. They're fighting again? Whatever, what else is new? Didn't even freak out when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, and it's the same basic situation in Ukraine only Ukraine is basically European and we can sympathize with them. We're Euro-centric. I mean let's face reality here: We care more about Europe than we do southeast Asia and the Middle East. There was uproar over the Taliban regaining control of Afghanistan but that quickly disappeared as the public came to realize they don't really care about Afghanistan.
