From, let's say, level 30 and beyond, what should be my strategy for soloing blue non-caster mobs?

I have velious clicky robe for DS on pet.

Which pet should I be using and why?

And is there any useful tips for as far as strategy goes? My go-to would just be to send in pet on a single mob and help with a nuke or two and then maybe heal pet or just make a new when first one dies. But should I be doing something else?

Any input is appreciated.

You need to do half of the damage or the pet eats half xp. Your almost at the level where it is best to chain 1 pet per mob.
Summon pet, burnout/Ds let pet mostly kill the mob and reclaim at low health. 1 small nuke and you get full xp. Soon your fire pets damage shield will do more than the shield of lava, at that point use the fire pet until 50.

Thanks, that sounds like sound advice. Full disclosure, my mage is currently lvl 17, I said "around 30" because I imagined I could breeze up to that level. But currently I'm letting my pets eat 50% of my exp. Should/can I already get 100 %?

You can if you do over half damage, but if it slows your kills too much it just isnt worth it. Mage levels go very quick until around 55

The ideal situation while leveling is to have your pet be able to bring the mob down to 5-10% health, then reclaim pet and do a small nuke to finish the mob. This nets you full exp.

Sometimes, and especially until 29 or so, it's easier to summon a max level pet and nuke for at least 50% of the damage ( remember that damage shield doesn't count as pet damage ). This will net full exp.

Both methods work fine, just try each at the different places you're leveling to see which is more efficient. Pet mana costs are often prohibitive until 29 or so, that's when I recommend switching to a focused fire pet and having the mobs beat themselves to death on fire's DS. A leveling path you could use for this would be:

29-34: The Brutes that are in the tunnels outside Dalnir, these guys are perfect to learn about the reclaim method, come in singles and there is a zone line right there if you accidentally in trouble.

34-39: Unrest basement, you can solo down there easily with the fire pet and levels will absolutely fly, bring some friends for safety or just enjoy feeling OP for a few levels.

39-46: Yeti's in Dreadlands, super relaxed outdoor camp, there are so many of these guys you'll never run out.

46-51: Bloodgills in Loio, you have to split two pulls if the entrance is camped, but these guys die so fast it's silly.

Find someone like 5 levels below you to ‘duo’ with (they’re only really there to remove pet penalty and as you’re higher level so will get the majority of the xp). Use them to do pulls, kite adds, share tanking, etc

Not technically solo, but it really helps have someone do the dogsbody stuff so you can focus on medding.

leave it to jimjam to respond to a "mage solo" thread with "find someone"

IKR?

But seriously, duoing with an afk halfling rogue that is 2/3 your level is the easiest way to overcome the xp penalty... hell at some point you could even use a level 1 in a different zone though I’m not sure that works any more.

Solo in a group(!)

Unfortunately that would be considered boxxing. Even if the character is not yours, if a GM walks by and does a box test on you and you fail, then you would get banned.

My Dark Elf Magician armed with just focus items took the following route, using solely water or air pets. I used platinum gained from camps to fund Research so I could make my own pet spells. My method for killing was summon my strongest pet using trash greens to see my pet's max hit (reclaim until max was up), damage shield pet, kill 2-3 mobs per cycle (or more) doing a bit above 35% to less than 40% total mob health damage from Direct Damage spells. I let the pet and the neutral source damage shield do the rest, and get full exp. I always researched the Wiki for a given mob's max health. My magician had a Smoldering Brand so I did melee until lvl 8.

lvl 1-4 Janam & Rebby note passing in Freeport to be able to buy / sell / bank in freeport.
lvl 4-10 Butcherblock skeletons near the druid ring and the yellow tower.
lvl 10-16 Butcherblock 4 spawn dwarf bandit camp / 3 spawn orc camp near each other.
lvl 16-20 I was going to do the Lesser Faydark sister camp, but opted for Iksar Brigand 4 spawn camp in Lake of Ill omen at some ruins between lake and Cabilis.
lvl 20-24 All the Wood Elf Rangers & Scouts I could melt in Timorous Deep.
lvl 24-26 Miller 2 spawn camp in Qeynos Hills.
lvl 26-36 Sword Sisters in Ocean of Tears.
lvl 36-42 Guard Pryde & Friend at guard tower in West Karana
lvl 42-49 Dorfs at the docks in Butcherblock
lvl 49-51 human rogue & eruidite paladin on the shore of the Wizard Tower island in Lake Rathe near the Rathe Mountain zone in side.

The majority of the above locations have access to beta neutral vendors. I didn't do the pet summon / send in / reclaim / kill with weak nuke method. Just the damage shield + nuke method above aiming for efficiency of the damage shield, pet damage, and my own nukes to just barely get the full experience kill. Speed is of the essence. Getting 2-3 mobs dead in less than a minute and then medding to full = faster respawns, more kills per hour.

Levels 44-49 were a complete joke thanks to having the elemental DoT spell from Velious. Damage shield strongest 44 air pet, send at a dwarf, immediately DoT the dwarf, sit and med, wait until the dorf is at 10% health left, back pet off, let the last tick or two of the DoT finish dwarf, full exp. I was able to keep the entire dock cleared at all times and get max loot which pissed off some druids hoping to get in a quad kite.

I actually had a druid say "I want to share the spawns. you can't have them all." to which I graciously said "absolutely fine with me. There's 7 total spawns. 2 shore dwarves, 2 dwarves on the piers, 2 in the huts, and a paladin over the wall. I was here first so we can split them. I'll take the 2 on the shore and the two in the Huts. You can have the 2 on the piers and the paladin over the wall. Enjoy."

They declined my generous offer. Doing the above method and route though was extremely fast, safe, mostly uncontested experience with good loot.

I'm so confused why you'd use the air pet. I can count on 1 finger (34 through 38) that he should have been my choice of pet. The camps you mentioned I'd only debate using him 49 to 51. Either dps and buzzsaw with the water pet or try to get full xp with the fire pet, imo

That seems odd to me too, but he mentioned doing the Paladin, and push (which the air pet is best at) used to interrupt casting. So maybe that was the best pet at the time because he was fighting a caster?
