Anyone else been having login server issues or having extremely long load times across zones and having to quit EQ and log back in? For the past week or so, I've been having the "logging in to the server message" up for a few minutes before saying it cannot connect or actually being able to login in, and I've been experiencing extremely long cross zone load times. I used to never have any issues, and it's not my internet. Was just curious if anyone else has been experiencing this.

I have had issues intermittently for over a month now. Primarily during primetime hours when the population is the highest.
My symptoms (when it starts acting up) are -
Initially logging in times out, states no internet connection
Logging succeeds but server list is completely blank
Very long zoning times
Totally lock up loading
Affects all my computers when it occurs as well - linux, pc's, laptop's, tower's.
I suspect it is something to do with my internet, because switching my connection to a VPN resolves it for whatever reason. AT&T is uninterested in more information from me since it only appears to be affecting my connection to P1999.
I know this isn't particularly helpful, but you are not alone.

Same issue. Crashing on zone in, crashing when I camp out, logging in taking forever, random login errors when I try to connect to Green.

I've been having the same issue. Occurs mostly when servers are at peak (e.g., 900+ on green). I am also on AT&T fiber. Is that a common thread here?

I am having the same issue and also on AT&T fibre. I dont think thats the issue as AenorVZ points out it doesnt time out until it hits 144.121.39.122.lightower.net.
I have reproduced it myself and I fail at the same step.

Follow up to my previous post.
After reading cdfurry comment about a VPN fixing his issue, I thought I would try a few things and it does appear that a VPN can be a "work around".
If you use a VPN, you will still time out if you use the "Login" button which seems to go through the EQEmu login server.
However, if you use the "Quick Connect" button to your server (I did Blue) I was able to connect directly twice. If I turned off the VPN, I could no longer connect. Turning VPN back on allowed me to connect again.
FYI - not sure if this is relevant, but my VPN was running through Chicago.
Like I said before, I dont know much, but did some LAN stuff like 20 years ago. If anything I said is wrong, please correct me as I dont want bad information out there, but I do want to let people know it CAN work.

I've been having the same problems (stuck at log in screen - waiting for log in, or blank server select screen), but intermittently over the last few days. Also on AT&T Fiber. No work arounds seem to work. Have tried VPN, flush dns, etc. Only thing that seemed to work was coming back much later / next day :(

Experiencing the same shit on AT&T. Cannot connect every night during the evenings. Cannot log in, server select is blank, takes forever to load world or zone.
Switching to tethered through wireless works.
Issue is 100% with the AT&T domestic internet, but not their cell phone.

Well since AT&T seems to be the common thread and there's obviously a significant amount of people unaffected and able to play it seems that we need some route to bring this to their attention to get it addressed.
Unfortunately I do not know the channels to use to do so. AenorVZ indicated the issue isn't limited to AT&T, but it must have something to do with the routing they are using or something since it is specifically affecting those of us with their service and not apparently the other 1400+ people logged in nightly.

I am having the same issue as everyone else here. I am unable to log in between about 6pm and 10 pm CST, otherwise it seems ok. signed Frustrated ATT internet guy
Tethering is an option to try, even if ATT cell service maybe the issues are only with their internet service.
If ATT doesn't allow tethering you could try one of many apps that hide the tether usage from the cell provider.. I use EasyTether Pro, PDAnet is another good one I've used before.

Others have reported tethering does in fact work, as does using a vpn in some cases.
While workarounds are great for the interim, I believe the majority of us are more interested in getting this corrected so that a such things are not needed.
If anyone has a method of reporting this type of connectivity issue to AT&T it sounds like that is what we really need. The tech support I had on the phone was uninterested in the specifics of what I was having issues connecting to and was unwilling to escalate it further but perhaps I will try again.
And in a sense I cannot blame them. In all likelihood nationwide this is probably only affecting a few hundred users at most and likely does not demand significant investment of time and resources for them to investigate further.

I AM NOT on AT&T and am having the issue, and it’s only happening to me at peak times. I’ve had no issue logging in or zoning during the day, when server pop is low. I know the server has seen an spike in population here lately, so I just thought it might be on P99’s end. Everything I’ve checked on my end seems to be fine, and I haven’t had any issues with any other sites/games.

How can i get a vpn without getting scammed or a virus? I cant stand this anymore.
I've been driving myself crazy trying to fix this issue. I'm also a AT&T Fiber user and finding this thread I was able to solve the issue by using a VPN.
I used Toms guide to determine which is a good free VPN. I used the following link: https://www.tomsguide.com/best-picks/best-free-vpn
I choose to go with Proton VPN since it was free and had good reviews, I did not try any of the others.
Using the above VPN I was able to immediately log into P99. I've been using it for about an hour without any issue. My ping is between 88-92 which isn't ideal but for EQ is probably good enough.

I don't know if this will work for everyone, but I worked with the OP to try to narrow this down. The first clue we received was when I had him change the eqhost.txt file where it says Host=login.eqemulator.net:5998 to Host=160.72.227.52:5998
When that got him to server select with a populated server list, I suspected whatever DNS his IP was using was not resolving the P99 server correctly. So we followed this and had him set his DNS to the Google Public DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4:
https://www.hellotech.com/guide/for/how-to-change-dns-server-windows-mac
My understanding is that he has had significantly less issues, so it might be worth a try for some of you experiencing the same issue. Write down the DNS settings so you can revert back to default if it doesn't solve anything for you.

I tried all of these things you mentioned previously, and while it seemed like it made a difference I think it was more or less just luck. The problem simply returned some time later. The issues seem intermittent and seem to correlate with server population but that may just be coincidence. I suspect it is just based on prime time heaviest traffic.
Unfortunately, while I initially had great success using VPN to get around the issue, even that has started to be affected by the same symptoms. My hope is the problem is getting worse and as a result may be easier for someone to find and correct the issue.

Yes, Yendor did help me and I have experienced less issues than before, but I was still having some intermittent troubles. They would not last nearly as long as before, but I would still have the issue. Last night I played through a VPN and didn’t have any issues at all. It was the first night I tried this, so I don’t have a large data set to base an opinion on. With that said, my issues were also occurring during peak times. With the increase of population since the beginning of the year (Green approx 1k at peak, blue approx 900 at peak), could it just be a P99 server issue? I’m not super tech savvy, but is there such a thing as the server IP prioritization? Why would connecting through a VPN first seem to help? I’m genuinely curious. It just seems odd that a lot of people started having the same/similar issue all of a sudden. I know most have AT&T, but I do not, and I’m sure others do not as well.

I am currently experiencing difficulty logging in.
Either it waits forever and eventually times out with a pop up talking about "Scheduled Downtime" or my "Network Connection".
Or it does eventually log in .. but then the "server list" is empty and I can only CANCEL out of this and start the frustration over again.
I was logged in most of this afternoon ( several hours ) .. logged out for dinner .. now no joy. Internet connection is strong ( watching Netflix currently ). So not quite sure what the issue is. Perhaps the login server, or the BLUE server?

I have no issues during the daytime either, just at night when the server is at peak population, and it just started happening the past couple of weeks. Last night, after having issues again, I set a static IP to my PC and made sure all of my drivers were updated. I could log in and out just fine afterwards, but it could just be coincidence. I’m of the opinion there is a load limit as well, since a lot of people just started having the issue, which coincides with the increased population since the beginning of the year.

Have you checked your internet connection speed? If you haven't, then go here and check https://www.speedtest.net/ If your download speed is below 20 then that may be your problem. Which could be a router issue or your internet provider.

Speed tests don't mean anything. If any node along the route to the server/login sever has issues then you get these problems. You can run a tracert via the cmd prompt and potentially see where the issue is. I was getting less than 10ms response times at each node until I got to a bad node that would either time out or be excessively high. Speed test was perfect.

I appreciate this thread as I was able to solve the original issue (being an ATT user) by using a VPN. A few posts have recently mentioned the unknown error issue at server select. I am getting that same issue as of today and am using VPN and not on ATT internet currently, so I think there's just some server issues going on for this one. Logging in, getting to the character list and even zoning are next to impossible at the moment. If you're logged in and in a zone, don't log out and don't travel to another zone or chances are you won't be able to get back in.
EDIT: I was able to finally get in by using Quick Connect instead of going to the server list. Don't know if that's reliable or if I just got lucky.
Also seems like zoning isn't impossible but it's like 50/50 shot whether or not it times out and boots you out.

This has been getting worse and worse since the last few updates. I can't log in most days for hours on end. VPN, changing settings in general does NOTHING. I just get stuck at server select and then later it fixes itself. Since the last patch I crash almost all the time, what changed? Just stuff on the server end. I think this is a combination of server/client issues and then ISP.

This has happened quite a few times over the last few days. I try to log in, but the server list will not populate… it is empty.
Edit: been trying for over an hour. Calling it a night, but FWIW, I keep getting either “Error -A timeout occurred”, OR a big long message basically saying to check my internet connection (which is fine everywhere else), OR I get to a blank server select screen. Frustrating… time to do something else.

I'm on sonic gig fiber which is riding on at&t fiber in my area. Same problem. changing DNS to google's for both ipv4 and ipv6 did nothing. Tethering on my phone always works. VPN works. I tested my up and down speeds on my eq machine and its 100 down and 150 up. These numbers are lower than normal for my connection which is around 350 down and 350 up over wifi. This suggests to me that this issue is coinciding with throttling done by at&t during prime time. That being said no other service encounters any issues. project1999.com has the same issues (i'm writing this tethered to my phone) right now.
I am worried that while using VPN multiple accounts could collide with each other and get us banned. VPNs have a limited number of "exit IPs" and it's quite plausible that multiple of us trying to circumvent this problem will appear to p99 folks as if we're playing on the same IP. Can we please get at least a comment from a mod on this?
I basically cant play from 5pm PST to around 11pm PST every day.

Ya'll need to contact AT&T and tell them to stop packet shaping, filtering, QoS'ing or whatever the hell they're doing to the Login Server's traffic. Or use a VPN to completely avoid their network.
Complaining in a thread here will not fix your issue.

The Linux issue is a known issue solved by middlemand (https://github.com/Zaela/p99-login-middlemand). This cross-compiles and generally works for windows too. But they're all just workarounds to "something is dropping packets". Common sources are:
Linux IP Stack (middlemand)
Wifi / Poor Signal (try a hardwired connection)
Upstream filtering (contact your ISP)

By all appearances, lightower.net (or whoever is right after them in the chain) is where the problems start.

Again, you have one of three issues. A traceroute doesn't mean whatever you think it means.

And I am saying, I have changed NOTHING on my end since playing P99 without issue for 9 years until recently. You are advocating for an issue that spontaneously shows up without any cause.

Upstream filtering (contact your ISP)

Wrong. I use a VPN and the full route out of that network is shown in both traceroutes, both P99 and PEQ. If my VPN provider is mangling packets, they would be mangling PEQ's packets just the same as P99. That does not appear to be the case, unless the PEQ client somehow compensates for it in ways the P99 client does not.

1. Use a real full-tunnel VPN
2. Provide PCAP or GTFO

I'll wireshark both the P99 and PEQ logins this weekend.
And, I use openvpn with Private Internet Access as my vpn provider. Been using them for years and played P99 for years over it.

Not sure about everyone else, but I do not use AT&T for my connection. I also route all my traffic through a VPN anyway.
Also, I was able to use PEQ login server and play with no issue, so the issue is not on my end.
I'm in the same boat, and I do not have AT&T. I've never had issues playing P99 until about a month ago, which is why I started the thread. I've had the same ISP, router, etc for the last four years, and I've never had an issue playing until until now. I find it hard to believe that all of these people have just started having issues at the same time, and we're all supposed to believe it's just coincidence or our ISP's just recently changed something.
I did recently set my PC to a static IP, and update all of my drivers (just built a new rig about 4 months ago). It has seemed to help a little, but I still have troubles logging in and zoning.

I havent had an issue with loggin in p99 ever till recently aswell. I restart, check web-page, google. nothing has fixed it, it jus randomly will start to work again.

I rarely is ever have posted here. I was playing last night until around 4am EST. Today I tried logging in around 12:30pm EST and am getting the "Unknown Error Occurred". I noticed at one point trying to log in in stead of the text "Blue Server : Project 1999" It was some German text. So far it has only happened one time. What is going on?

Experiencing this issue this morning. VPN does not help. Added wildcard exceptions for login.eqemulator.net and leqemulator.net in my PiHole whitelists.
Tried to login off of VPN, same result. "An unknown server error occurred while trying to join the server."
Played just fine yesterday for many hours.
EDIT: Was able to login to Blue character screen. Tried to switch to Green. Got the error again for both Blue and Green.

Same issue here, I found an old thread saying to flush your DNS and try again, that did not work for me. Have tried resetting computer twice as well and no luck. I see there are over 200 people on server, but most likely people that have been logged in for a while, I would guess nobody is able to log back in if they happen to log off

Glad to see it isn't just me. Something must be up with the login server. Blue & Green showing population, so must be the overnight AFK crowd.

What did work for me is setting my DNS to the Google Public one, i also did change before the Host file, but i believe the DNS was the culprit as i usually use Cloudflare.

I wanted to comment here.
They utilize a service called EQEmulator which has been having server issues.
You can check the status at EQEmulator.net
There's a suggested fix of modifying EQhost.txt file from
HOST=login.eqemulator.net:5998
To
HOST=login.projecteq.net:5998
I'm new here (but a techie). Can someone confirm this works for them as well then sticky it?

That works but pulls up a different list of game servers. I don't see P99 there (I can check again). Interestingly, I selected a random server and that actually allows me to login.

Having trouble again tonight - last Wednesday I had issues, found this thread, changed my DNS settings to Google public servers and it worked right away. Tonight, no luck. Have also tried OpenDNS server. Most of the time I get a timeout error when trying to log in (server select screen never loads) but sometimes it does load a blank list. One time I tried "quick connect" trying to get to Blue; it logged me into "Classic EverQuest With A Twist" instead
