Iksar didn't exist in 1999.
Iksar not classic.
Iksar Monk not classic.
Iksar Necro not classic.
Fungi tunic not classic.
Level 60 not classic.
These arrived after classic/original just like Beastlords did.

Our goal is to restore the magic and difficulty of the original Everquest game, including the mechanics, interface, and challenges of Original Content, Kunark, and Velious.
Hope this helps.

Hey OP, welcome to the messageboard and the project 1999 community. I can tell you're totally brand new and have read almost none of the threads that might have informed you more about this project.
This community defines the "classic era" as Vanilla - Velious. Starting with Luclin the game diverges from what Project 1999 staff and players identify as the "original intent" of the game.
I personally prefer the Vanilla era for all the reasons you mentioned above. First because it is by far the rarest era to get to enjoy, and second because the gear progression is totally rational in the vanilla era, while things that were nearly BIS like the Short Sword of Ykesha are nearly vendor items by the time you reach Velious which doesn't feel right to me, though those later eras are all fun.
Thanks for checking in to the forums and I hope you have a great time on project 1999, which will never go to Luclin. There are several other excellent servers that do go beyond this era. The Alkabor PRoject "Takp" and "Project EQ, the grand creation" additionally, shards of dalaya is an excellent EQ emu server that goes beyond velious and is well supported with a robust community.
I hope you find a server that meets your needs.

I'm new to this emulated version of EverQuest but not new to EverQuest or the english language.
There's the objective 'classic' and the subjective 'classic era' which can be anything you want it to be and you've just told me this community prefers the subjective term so it's no wonder Classic on P99 is not classic.
Classic, though, mathematically speaking, is the original game only which was released in 1999.
If you want to say the sky is green instead of blue though that's up to you and if you want to say players on P99 will never go to the moon or play Beastlords then that's up to you too.

Okay sounds good Gugg
I don't like the term Vanilla for pre-kunark everquest but that seems to be the most universally understood term.
I like vanilla EQ best too.
we need more choices for classic everquest servers. think about it. Gugg here wants a classic classic, gustoo wants a red 2.0 classic, I want you all to shut the fuck up classic, Jimjams all like go read the welcome message retard classic and we're all left here in a big divide.

I don't think we need anything. We just want a bunch of stuff.
I can't see complaining about a different Non PVP server than the ones offered with blue and green though. They seem perfect. Old world content should be all empty anyways since they're in velious era so just go make a retro planar only guild and gear up accordingly. IT doesn't make any difference since there is no PVP that some guys run around with 250 all resists and all stats basically with an extra 2000hp

Their English is so good that OP posted their troll rant in the "Starting Zone" instead of RnF. Must just be low IQ then. Sorry your feelings are hurt that others don't subscribe to your line of thinking about 'classic' EQ. Thanks for your contribution to the community.

Agreed
But the P1999 owners define otherwise for their purposes.
Grinding banded with reinforced mask/collar/boots and slaughtering dogmen near newbie zones is spiffing.

I think having a perma classic server would be a lot of fun.
Thing is Velious removed a lot of good stuff. The whole premise of Classic where your religion and your race mattered is gone by Velious, None of it matters there. And anyone can max out the stats with new gear. A lot of items made many choices trivial. Kunark was still not too far gone from that.
I'm not really a big fan of Velious.

OP, I think you maybe wanna try P2002 or TAKP
make your own server if you're so smart
imo luclin counts as classic, but I see why people would disagree
I just liked moon cats tbh

I remember for whatever reason not being able to get a physical copy of SoL when it was released, probably because I was a broke kid.
Does anyone remember if Luclin was the first expansion they offered digital download for? I remember having to bootleg the files from my friend’s Dad, I don’t recall where I got an activation key from though.
My 32 MB of RAM were BARELY capable of loading the game. I remember between that and the server lag on launch it took me forever to load. The only time I lagged before SoL was on the rare occasions I did ToV raids.
SoL and PoP were great expansions but I feel the decline of EQ started with SoL and by the time PoP was released WoW was coming out and we all know what happened then.

Make it TAKP if you're going anywhere else, I'd suggest.

Ykesha was download only, Luclin and PoP both had box art by Keith Parkinson before he moved on to Vigil to help make Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (bad name like Pantheon).
The decline of EQ could be felt by the end of Velious as Dark Age of Camelot (Mythic also made Magestorm (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3408896&postcount=8) ) was about to release. After DAOC you had Star Wars Galaxies and Shadowbane, then WoW would come along and stagnate the genre for at least 15 years - hard style. By the time MMORPG players woke up from their Blizzard induced hibernation the demographics had changed over to a console dominant-computer hybrid that praised thumbsticks.

Probably because AC came out in 1999 and was a direct competitor of EQ. He's talking about a post Velious timeline

I know LoY was digital only. I am curious about the first expansion that was available for digital download and also you could purchase a physical copy. My memory is hazy but I seem to remember Luclin being the first you didn’t need to buy a physical disk for.

MS didn't miss WoW though. Hmm, console MMORPGs.

Two more expansions before Luclin. Second one almost same idea of POP. Just throw some random plane expansion out there. Or, my favorite, another planet.
Luclin, only ports to Luclin, with the exception of one Spire.
Two (One?) expansion after Luclin, make it two spires to Luclin for ease of access.
Then eventually POK, with limited book access. Then maybe after a bajillion expansions, the world is too full. Sorry everyone you missed the boat on classic. We are dropping instant teleport books in POK. (Still maybe not all of them.)
Maybe people just rushed the idea of insta-teleport everything too quick.
Sorry for preaching again. Please don't hate me. Have a nice day! *Anime smile*

One thing I really hated in classic was that stupid book staring feature. That book staring idea was so retarded, even Verant never brought it back for a reason once removed. If they ever relaunch green or do a purely classic server, I'd not touch it if I had to stare at the book like an idiot.

One of the best things ever.
*16:9 widescreens assure this will not happen.
*Verant also removed RP features to appease raiders.
