Mage Pet Progression 51+

Howdy,

At what level do the pets outperform focused 49 pets? I do not have any focus staves. Also, it is highly unlikely I will get epic.

It kinda depends on what you mean by outperform but the 51 earth pet has a higher max dmg and higher level (so it will miss less and avg higher hits) than the 49 earth pet but will have less hp and will cost 50% more mana. So if you're chain summon soloing then the 49 pet is better for a bit. I can't remember exactly, but I did test it and I think the hp difference for max level 49 and 51 pets was ~400hp (3200 vs 2800). I think it has those listed on the mage pet guide in the wiki though.

The 50+ fire pets are completely useless but kinda funny. The couple times I used them they did seem to land their spells pretty easily, but they run out of mana in the first fight. I even got clarity for him and made him sit every fight but couldn't really tell any difference.

53 air pet is also kinda meh. It gets flying kick which hopefully does more dmg but loses bash which may be more useful. That said, I would use it over any 49 pet and 51 earth pet in a group just because of the higher max and higher level, and stun is always good while unpredictable root is not always great.

54 water pet is by far the best. It gets backstab so make sure he's facing the back of the mob and you'll get great dps. This makes the water staff which is the easiest to get in my opinion quite valuable as well.

I started using the 54 water for groups and the 56 fire (DDD) for solo unless I really needed the 49 earth for root (mostly for a change). Really though 57 earth is the game changer. It’s when I buried my 49’s way in the back of the book.

No, the 49th earth pet focused is more powerful than the higher level pet spells simply because of the hps alone. That 49th level focused earth pet at max level can have 3700 hps, that's more than any of the 51st+ pet spells unless you have the staff foci. And even then I think only the higher level earth pet w/ staff focus comes anywhere near that. So essentially you can forget leveling till you get a staff cause you're pets wont get any stronger. It is beneficial to use the higher level water pet in some groups. But having that enormous meat shield, there's no replacement. I asked a 54 pally how many hps he had, he said 2700, LOL.
With 49th earth pet focused I can solo mobs with 11-12k hps, its not easy, but i can be done. No other pet is gonna do that, again unless its higher level earth pet w/ staff foci.
An that is with chain pet currently being nerfed, btw.

Oh. So focused 49 earth over 51 Vocrate Earth. Interesting.

And the only non-focused pet worthwhile is water (54-60)?

As for staves, I guess it is possible I’ll at some point get one from Phinny, but not banking on it.

Only 52/58 fire is useless. Water is good in groups/raids, same for air; don't underestimate how powerful the stun is.

57 Earth is a beast, it's your workhorse to 60.

Uhhh. The 57 is way more tanky with a higher level spread. It also hits for a max of 70 so it’s way easier to outrun the mob’s health.

has a better damage mitigation,
Fewer resists on root due to its higher level

Focus 49 earth pet vs unfocused 51 earth pet is debatable though, but 49 vs 57 is a no brainer

I'm doing a dps parse now on a lvl 44 guard comparing a focused 49 earth to an unfocused 57 earth. A very narrow test but not sure it's worth going much further.

In this empirical testing the 49 pet is touch and go needing some nuke assistance. A top summon 57 has about half it's hps left.

It only wins on hit points, but you're forgetting the extra levels and damage that it does. The root also has a DD component. Once you try it you'll see how much better it is.
