Greetings all, after about a 15 year hiatus, I plugged back into EQ mid-late '19. Initially on live, on my old server with original characters. After doing some grinding; realizing just too much content had passed me by; no longer knowing what I was doing after about DoD expansion, and enjoying too many alts to ever truly get to endgame content anyway- I discovered p99.
I joined Green around Spring '20, so I missed the initial launch, but absolutely loved the (debatable, I know) "classic" feel of the game. I had some, but not much, difficulty finding groups/mobs to grind exp with, and was truly enjoying my time, albeit very limited availability. As I have perused the forums with bits of downtime while at work, and admittedly been lurking without much posting activity, (I believe in doing more listening than speaking; I never learned anything by listening to what came out of my own mouth) the aspect of PvP has become an undeniable urge.
I've made up my mind to roll something on Red; just debating on class/race combo. Considering all the info I've seen posted here, I'm wondering about the veracity of casters in general- the Necro class specifically. That has been my bread and butter over the years, and wonder if familiarity would breed success, or boredom...
Also wondering what all the commotion is, over the current Red server being 'broken', and wanting/needing a new version. Is current Red something to be avoided until things improve? What is so 'bad' about it? I'll not play live, TLP PvP or otherwise, so Red is basically going to be my go to PvP training grounds. Is it worth my (limited) time to begin a true newbie on Red? or should I just stick to grinding on Green?
Thank you for enduring my post. I offer my apologies for such a rambling stream of consciousness, and my sincerest thanks to anyone with helpful insight as I potentially prepare myself for a launch into the world of PvP via your p99 Red server.
***No red toon to drop in sig... other toons, Live/Green irrelevant***

You're asking if a sub 50 pop emulated pvp server is worth playing? lol
This is really a dumb argument just used to troll because with boxing accounted for all the EMU pvp servers have about the same pop, like all two of them? if there's one I don't know about lol. Admit it most of you guys hotbox both servers (or green and blue+red99). And can't stay away from red99, or its forums because you are onlyfans.
Please reply here: Lets be super honest please about how many of you still play here. (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3240161#post3240161) If you genuinely want to debate me so as not to troll the hell out of this newbies thread out of courtesy <3.
Also wondering what all the commotion is, over the current Red server being 'broken', and wanting/needing a new version. Is current Red something to be avoided until things improve?
There's no real good reason to avoid it aside from population. It's not broken per see. Some things aren't super duper classic. But close to classic. Like resists, agi/dex. Weighted Axe+low delay bow on an ogre (probably fixed real soon). Everything works and it feels very classic. Some players just are mad about not winning in 2018, 2014, 2016, etc and left to try and make better servers which are even less classic or allow boxing.
It uses the same (or almost same) code as green and blue do.
I'll not play live, TLP PvP or otherwise, so Red is basically going to be my go to PvP training grounds.
Red is perfect for learning how pvp works if you make it to the end game and hook up with either of the two guilds and make friends, they will support teaching u all the ropes.
Is it worth my (limited) time to begin a true newbie on Red? or should I just stick to grinding on Green?
You could hit 50 in less than a month, or 3 months. 60 in under a year. You could get decent 1 groupable gear within 6 months. There is a 300% xp bonus in grps and stuff so grouping even with people leaching exp is a bonus to your exp overall. That slows a lot at 50. So that's the kind of time investment your looking into for 1 character. Maybe a full year for two (a melee alt to compete in velious).
I'm wondering about the veracity of casters in general- the Necro class specifically
Necros are amazing at pvE you could literally get one to 60 probably in a month-or-two. Their lifetaps aren't half bad in PvP and their pets can do some dmg and add more stuff for ppl to root and pell in group pvp situations. vs Like geared players and noobs engulfing darkness owns all. They have a semi decent FR debuff. FD is amazing in pvp. Because you can escape players who don't have it. You can splurt or Ebolt ppl and FD somewhere else. Once you start adding teammates, and groupmates, guildmates the necro play style gets more diverse and interesting, you can heal and twitch, and do a lot of things for other players, DMF is an excellent pvp spell. I imagine you can sometimes land poison/disease dots in end game scenarios as well. Especially with a shaman buddy hanging around helping. (I'm really bad at actual pvp tho, so maybe we need a necro vs shaman or necro vs shadowknight thread).
All caster classes and priests are pretty viable on red as 1st toons. Cleric may be rough for someone who isn't an expert cleric and willing to afk a lot.
-----
Come 60, you'll probably want to have a real melee alt for pvp, just incase you are faced with more 1v1 situations. But EQ pvp is imbalanced, rock paper scissors, and melees are VERY strong in velious. Not saying 100% immortal but a lot of people have really good gear and are just going to win no matter what unless you're outside and just taking pot shots at each other which will be a stalemate.
Necros are great in mass pvp. Necros are mediocre in group pvp. Necros are very randomly good/bad in 1v1 pvp depending on who they are up against and the gear, and expansion.
Think about if you want to make a warrior, ranger, or rogue alt, and participate much in the end game, otherwise it will mostly be just a pve experience. High lvl end game pvp encounters can take all day. So you won't be wanting to pvp and contest regularly if you are casual, but no reason you can't log in one day a week and see if Apex or Perdition are doing things.
-----------------
I'll P.S. this and say: RoZ is offering level 55 characters, though the game goes up to PoP now? and has aas (probably a worse grind than 1-60 veious here), and a LOT of other un-custom stuff. It's a good not-classic-custom server. You can sorta learn to pvp there, but be prepared for grinding aas, boxing etc. It won't be the same as the EQ you remember so much. I'm leaving this here because its the alternative. It's not "better" it's totally different. Population is really about the same on both boxes, and RoZ is run by some clever coders who are actively trying to make the game neat.

Its low pop, but it allows you to quest and enjoy yourself. The other thing is that PVP makes the entire game more meaningful. You need to care about resists and your surroundings and you can't treat people like garbage because they can and will come back to kill you.
The red 2.0 server which has been promised and will eventually come will be the best iteration of classic EQ since 1999 and your practice on the current red server will serve you well to prepare for the PVP to come. When you get attacked just think as clearly as you can and try to live or be victorious. If you die and your EXP session is destroyed just let it go. The drawbacks are worth the benefits.
The current server petered out because of multiple guild bans, corruption early on, bad ruleset early on. A bunch of stuff that is kind of inexplicable. The fact remains that this is an excellent server and the staff is quite excellent and in fact is incomparable.
I would suggest playing a class that allows you to play the way you want. If you want to solo I would go with a necro, shaman, druid, or enchanter because they are all fairly efficient.
When you're playing, I think it is helpful to consider what gear and tools that will be available to you in a pre-kunark server so you can be most successful on red 2.0. I would even try to level to 50 in a pre-kunark way and think about a path, and even think about an alternative path because on red 2.0 all the popular zones will be totally covered with players and you will start thinking of alternate places to level in the outskirts of the game.
If you want a lot of people to sort of interact with, definitely play on blue or green right now. Either of those servers can allow you (green moreso) to practice somewhat for the red 2.0 experience which you will certainly not want to miss.
Blue you will probably be able to get more and better handouts from people if you want to get free items in east commonlands tunnel to help you on your quest to just tool around the game rather than go through the slow progression from cloth to ringmail to bronze to actually magical armor.
good luck pal!

Instead of reading this dribble pick up the ball and play. Not much of anything going to be going on at your level obviously with 19 live people online on average.

Much thanks for your quality replies. Those are exactly the kind of comments I was hoping for, and I appreciate any & all wisdom shared.
With regards to getting to end game content: I will never get there, on any server, PvP or otherwise. My playing time availability just won't allow it. RL is REAL, and EQ is my fun downtime escape (within reason). I never made it to max level on Live. As max lvl increased with each expansion, I just got farther and farther away from it. I couldn't allocate the kind of time during my Live days, or now, to accomplish such feats. My Necro (main) was around 40 around Kunark Launch; Upper 40's by Velious; Low 50's by Luclin. During that time though, I managed to also get a Cleric up to low 50's by PoP also, and a Shaman to low 40's as well. I am fully aware that I could have had my Necro AT the endgame, but again- my short bouts of time didn't allow for extended camping/exp grouping, and time of day availability (MY prime time hours are Central US early-mid afternoon. I'm in bed by the time the west coast sits down to dinner) means no raiding either.
For me, the joy is in the journey. Call me sadistic, but I enjoy playing alts: struggling through the 20's, 30's, 40's in all the semi-classic/Kunark locations; grinding a loc off the beaten path while others fight it out in the more populous areas; farming stuff with my Necro to hand down to my lowbie alts; etc.
As Atypical as all that sounds for someone playing a 20+ year old elf simulator ( a phrase I've obviously heard here- and Love it! )... that is ME. A Necro at heart, with Priestly inclinations, and very little true melee experience.
Thanks again, and keep the advice coming!

Forum time is 'at work, down-time'- when I can pick the brains of all the other folks who have dedicated WAY more time to this game than I will ever be able to do myself.

If you just want to go slow motion cruising the game you might be better served on blue or green where there are more people to interact with. More camps will be unavailable to you so you may not get to do exactly what you want when you play, but that is the tradeoff of having more population.
Decide what you want to do. With the way red99 is now, PVP is going to be mostly an inconvenience because you won't be seeing a lot of competing guild activity and stuff at level 1-55
Can't go wrong with any of the servers and if you play red and just feel too lonely then just ditch it.
Iksar necro's are awesome. On green, kunark is still pretty fresh so there is a ton of people tooling around in kunark and there is even a guild that is doing an iksar only 1 life weird thing called "legacy of IK" which seems like a fun way to play if only for a little while.

I've been a blue player since 2016. And I joined the green server race when that all started too.. Ultimately i have found my home on red these days... PVP is and was a part of EQ's history, so everybody should experience and make a character here regardless.. If you enjoy EQ, then you should have a toon on all 3 servers honestly.. They all have their reasons to play on.
That being said- Red is my home for a few reasons. I cannot compete with folks on green or blue.. my life doesnt allow such playtime. And i found myself getting quite discouraged by all my buddies getting loots and raiding, or developing these relationships that i wasn't..
Red helps me balance all these feelings.. The low populations keeps me feeling involved.. I know the names, the names know me. And i have 0 feeling of needing to beat everquest.. Everyday since i joined has been seriously stress free and enjoyable! Camps are open. The PVP aspect breathes fresh life into P99 for me, different strategies and what not. Bigger focus on other types of gear and what not.
Red is fun for what red provides and does best. Gotta be a self motivator over here.. Need to be the type of person that when there is nobody around to group with or kill, that you can find plenty of things to do to keep you busy.. Complete quests, or camp gear you otherwise can't on the other servers! Come here for PVP. Come here for PVE.. Whatever your reasons are- Try red today!!

Sanctuary is the leveling guild on the server. As a past PVE player, they make me feel like i have a home.. It's nice having a group of folks i can trust and ask for favors or to join me in adventures..
Sometimes it gets a little scary on red taking ports or joining groups outside the guild... But it's those kinda things that make the server fun. Like, should i trust this guy for a port? Who is this level 27 who's LFG, does he actually want to group or is he gonna turn around and gank me.
Anyways, super happy to have you here man!! Always happy to provide a starter package for anybody joining up! And if you are looking to join sanctuary, feel free to holler at me!

To me it feels like its a basketball game that's been playing so long the score is, 1,024,272 to 2,008,101 and hopefully one day someone can reach up and press the reset switch.
red in this version should still be good. I just can't play it right now. I've leveled up plenty of characters and it all turned out fine. (250 population.) I don't even know how many times I've been Pked. My memory says less than 10 but that can't be right. If you can prepare mentally that its going to be rough then it might not be and you may enjoy a new perspective on EQ.
I may have not even got a single PK kill.

I tried Red and it is everything StrongNpretty says. The only thing I will add from my experiance is that you will feel VERY under geared anytime you get into a pvp situation. Everyone you face will have far better gear and you will have literally no chance. So unless you have a friend to sponsor you then DO NOT go to red for the pvp aspect because you will be sorely disappointed.

True but there are also scrubs like me running around. It's just exceedingly rare to run into one of the 5-10 of us, and us scrubs, and naked casters are usually inclined to help each other.
I have run into twinked and well geared melee that helped me fight in unrest and guk as well. Rarely, but the good guys are out there.
Newbies won't be fairing well against the other 90% of the regulars though who've had years to gear and pvp.

With the population being what it is (sparse) it sounds like true pvp encounters during the lower-mid levels will be somewhat few and far between. When they occur, I'll just take my beatings, and move on- taking notes to improve and remembering names, for sure. haha My ego can certainly allow for such occurrences without too much crying in public.
I'll probably roll a Necro (thinking Human Inny worshipper, just for the fun of it) to do some farming and get some general experience on the server. I know they can operate just fine while being mostly naked- and just save up/farm for items for my true toon. Considering a Bard, to have a melee type that can still solo at all times, since group exp action will be all but non-existent during my journey through the lower levels.
I have always toyed with the notion of a Halfling Warrior. Exp boost would be nice, but with all the required solo'ing... downtime would be atrocious.
As always, thanks again for all the comments. Hoping to have time to get on soon and get this ball rolling.

Regarding gear: I'll be under-geared as long as I'm playing; I know that, and I'm okay with that. If my main farmer/financier is Necro, he'll be close to naked, except whatever cloth he can scrape off the skeleys.
How does the economy operate on Red though? Assuming no p2p in EC. /ooc is global, right? Is /auc global as well?

Necro is easier to gear up and explore the world in. You won't be in rags long there is a lot of gear you can solo up as a necro especially in Kunark and you will get money pretty fast too.
If you make a necro, consider an iksar because regen is better than no regen, and they have great stats. I would personally do a full kunark play through since I've never really done it and a necro is perfect for it.
You'll find tons of gear from other players unless you're totally anti social.
If you roll a warrior you won't be able to do as much, won't be able to explore as much, and will be dependent on groups that probably won't exist.
But definitely follow your heart.

Bards can hit 60 naked. Not a bad choice for a first character if you have the skill. Or can acquire the skill from forums.
I'm to slow in reaction time for bard. But if I did one, I would AoE blackburrow till my 20s. Then. Idk try to AoE EK, SK. Or charm outdoors.
Around 30s, OT or FV, both of which have exp quests.
Dunno about after that, but BW and DL could get you into your 50s.

I feel like not having much competition in those early zones will certainly expedite things. I may just roll both (Necro & Bard) and see which one wins more of my attention and interest as I play through.
I had thought of rolling Iksar for Necro just to explore lower levels of Kunark. I spent TONS of time there back on live, begining in LoIO, then FM/OT/DL/BW/CoM/KC, but didnt venture there until 20's - 30's with either necro or cleric.
I had thought that Bards were more gear dependent... and perhaps they are given certain group dynamics- but if they can solo while lightly geared, then all the better.

Pretty sure a generic or cheep lute is mostly what they need for soloing.
Their first charm works for 18 seconds, I think fixed duration.
Eventually you can get dots going for about 60-120 dmg a tick (7 seconds) ? Would need to do some serious bard research to tell for sure.
I never picked up the class because they require a lot of actions per minute. And duel wield instead of double attack. I think double attack would have been so cool instead of dual wield for a bard :)

Bards can level to 60 full naked with just a guitar.
They need zero gear at all.
They are the best class in the game if you ask me, but only if you want to learn to play them at top level. I don't really want to have to mix songs all the time with perfect timing and...well i dunno maybe I should make a bard and get good.

okay, so after playing for awhile last night, (got necro to L4) I have some questions that make me sound like a total newbie (which I admittedly AM, with regards to Red and all things PvP). There was some terminology thrown around in /ooc that I couldn't quite decipher by context or otherwise, and have not been able to sufficiently figure it out by way of the boards here. So- couple of terms I'm seeking clarification/explanation of please: Plug (plugging) and YT's.
So from context I gathered that Plugging was logging out during pvp encounter... maybe even just zoning out? Is this done when unavoidably losing, to avoid being 'announced' as defeated?
YT's seem to be some sort of negative 'feedback' or losing stats/stigma attached to losing pvp encounters. They are BAD, and result from losing... is about all I could gather regarding this.
I'm a LONG way from ever being involved, so I may figure it out over time, but just curious again, after seeing such commentary in an evening's playtime. Clearly the vast majority of this server's population (small as it may be) has been playing for a very long time. (((Funny though how someone can stir up as much hostility as one did last night, without somebody knowing who they were/are))) The guild/server politics are beyond me, and always will be. I'm just a lowbie fly on the wall observing all the smack talk and somewhat enjoying it.
Starting in a new (to me) beginning city on this new (to me) pvp server is quite refreshing and makes me feel like i truly am starting from scratch with wide-eyed bewilderment.
Much fun so far, killing skelles running from SWCubs, and cursing the Militia Skeletons, all while running around FoB all alone! haha

YT refers to a PvP kill which are announced server wide in yellow text “DBStrong has slain Tassador in field of bone”
Meant to encourage pvp, it is a non classic aspect of the server that I consider abominable.
Plugging is when you zone out and unplug your lan cable, cutting your connection. Your character enters the zone line and never comes out the other side. It is the only way to instant disconnect and spare yourself a death.
It’s totally classic and I don’t hold any grudges for people that do it. In that sense a zone line is a safe place from both PvP and PvE
Beware of zones with an exit different than the entrance which for the most part are introduced in Kunark to limit the damage caused by trains.
Congrats on level 4. I’d focus on skeletons to get their bone ships and the shields they drop are worth 1pp which will help you get your spells.

Yeah man I have zero hours logged since like 2015 its a hobby at work to come here and beg for a new server and help noobs. Literally I don’t play at all. I still like eq. I mean, what's your excuse? I like EQ PvP but have other priorities and the current server, though it would be my top choice for playing EQ right now, it isn't my top choice of things to do with my free time, so I am not active.

Most responses have been helpful, regardless of how many hours are actively logged... each person who has responded obviously knows more than I do, specifically with regards to Red, and I appreciate hearing it. I thought that’s kinda what these forums were for- sharing in knowledge and passing along acquired wisdom.
I’m having fun, when I have time to play. When I have played on Red, I end up having questions about what I’ve seen/encountered. I suppose I should put on my neckbeard diaper and just play one session til I’m 50+ and can hang with the big dogs, right? Or should I just not play red at all in some form of silent protest? ...so that the handful of people who are logging on, don’t have to worry about any stupid newbies clogging up their private server?
I’ll be fiddling with the Bard tonight ( haha! Bard humor) see- Having Fun. It’s a Game! Whoopty Doo and WooHoo too

So what is it called when a fellow pc camps a person and just almost kills them... and won’t let them do anything... camping out included? Thought maybe suicide by npc was a way out but no.
I’d rather have just been killed, bowed in defeat and gone about our business, but that wasn’t even allowed, after dying multiple times respawning nearby (newbie zone) and the whole cycle repeated until I had to /q and then came back later to yet another corpse.
Notes taken and now understanding what ‘fun’ is on red.

Who was it? Where? Out of curiosity. This is pretty rare. You found a troll.
Normally u can /q or just unplug your network or turn your wifi off a sec. Or run to zone and do the same you will instantly pop out of the world.

Dunno if OP knew about it, we neglected to mention. He could gone to SoNH or LoIO a min.
He needs to actually die tho. Iksars are in a weird spot as newbies with their regen and skeles.
Thats why we should know about the other party involved here. So we can do something about it. Load up Fraps if we see this person engage us. Etc.

It happened in N Qeynos newbie yard; I had switched over and was playing my Bard. Technically my deaths were by npc (so no YTs) because I had been trying to use an aoe dmg spell and it aggro’d the yard trash. One can only claim L&S after pvp death, right? But after /q’ing I died without aoe song going so lists been at the hand of this other toon. Idk if there was any YT or not. So out of 4 deaths, only 1 was technically result of pvp; although the others would have never happened without pvp contact.
After finally being able to escape his elementary school yard shenanigans, I did play my Iksar Necro for awhile. I /w’d his name and he was gone so I swappped back over. Luckily I was only a handful of kills from L5 and I had already purchased my song (Selo’s) and a cheap hand drum. Next time I’ll just run away! Haha

One can only claim L&S after pvp death, right?, ya but you can LnS if they are griefing u and mobs kill u, there was another player invovled. That caveat is simply so people can't run in and train a zone, die to mobs and LnS. So if your not using LnS to cheat some pvp encounter your gonna be fine. If someone casts a spell on u or tries to hit u with white damage, even if it don't land, and a dragon eats u, it wasn't a PvE death, u were in pvp. Make sure to enable /log, shout your lns and get timestamps of any attack the player takes against you, that'll get em suspended (I hope, not permabanned) but Gms can be harsh. You'll be an instant hero if someone gets suspended who's a big time raider in Apex or Perdition, to one side or another, but I wouldn't say go out of your way for this, just it's part of the server dynamics. It's hard to explain. Maybe someone else can do a better job than I.
Congratz on surviving your first pvp encounter! There is a babarian in qeynos that got me at the bank, wonder if it was the same person?
I have been logged in AFK in nektulous like 4 days (so close to lvl 9). Want to try and hit level twelves but my family has some time off and I haven't been inclined to log in.
Thing's will definately get easier on the bard, as soon as you can afford a few 'pumice stones' (sold in qeynos near the mages guild in that little area with the herbs), pick up two, and if someone roots yourself you can usually pumice it off and run away with selos.
Qeynos is usually way more peaceful than nektulous and field of bone or lake of ill omen lol.
Another zone to be a bit warry of is mistimoore and unrest, and overthere.
I'm sure the other guy was happy to see another player in game, maybe they will re-evaluate attacking repeatedly you next time (probably not lol), but sometimes I quit, and I wish I had stayed on the server a little longer just to out level the player killer and hang out were they were botherin me :)
It's possible to make friends too, ppl will not say 'hi' sometimes they'll kill ya a few times.
Got to talk about this stuff and let people know if they have a guild tag lol. There's some real cute sherrifs in RV
thanks for sharing ur newbie experience btw

It got me a bit pissy in the moment, but no biggie in the larger picture of things. Thanks for sharing the protocol for future instances if/when they occur.
It was a human SK for what it’s worth. Fairly sure it was an alt of someone else traveling through the zone and noticing a lowbie in the yard that was in level range for their own lowbie alt to harass. I noticed them and then that person gone and the pk’er on. Lesson learned and notes taken. No guild tags that I noticed.
Something completely different- first took started in Qeynos area and I’ve noticed NO spiders! None in newbie yard, none in QHills and can’t find any nearby in WK. someone did there are some in aqueducts, but I couldn’t find any. Sucks for trying to start tailoring. It was suggested to just dump practice points and go straight to patchwork. I’ll figure it out I suppose; just never thought a newbie area would be so devoid of spiders. Lol

the mats for patchwork are so cheep i just failed like 20 mask combines to skill it up, didn't even put points in it, been skilling it up on my mage for raw silk next
finally dinged 9, got like 20 tailoring )
bring a small sewing kit, mask pattern, and you'll be good to go, sucks that u wont have easy access to silk thread for padded leather until u hit everfrost though.
make sure to grab to make a skinning knife, also pretty easy after churning out metal bits, lvl 10-15 is agood level to start those as gnolls drop some good coin and you'll have sellos. and you'll get gnoll fangs while farming the plat for it

Not giving up- that’s too easy and juvenile. Also the enhanced exp makes my limited playtime all that much more rewarding.
Not boxing- I know my computer hardware is up to the challenge, but MY biological hardware (old brain) is not up to it... especially with Bard and Necro; thinking that would require a LOT of keystrokes for success. No doubt that would be an awesome combo though.
Just gonna keep chugging away when I have the time to get on. Thanks for the tips, wisdom, and encouragement all.

Red is not a PvP server; it’s a solo server. The cry for a new server is mostly from a gathering of players who’ve “been there, done that.” on a multitude of level 60’s. There will not be a néw PvP server, so roll a toon on Red, enjoy the massive exp bonus and incredible party exp (when you can find a partner or two) and having almost every single camp open. Take it for what it is, in any class you choose, and you will have a good time.
Also, hit up Andain, the servers #1 promoter and he’ll most likely give you a good starting weapon and some coin

That’s the spirit don’t let words hurt you like these other wimps. Imagine their feelings when die in pvp.
Eq tho is a game that you can’t verbally walk through all the mechanics you got to get spanked and re adapt. Unfortunately you will not have chances to do much of shit in pvp with no exp and nobody to pvp. More than likely your encounters will be people harassing you with over geared lowbie chars.
My thoughts don’t listen to magnetress or gusto. Talk to people on the server they are so happy to have anyone new you probably get all the help you need right there.

I don't exactly disagree with Shrubwise, but the option to grp and goof off around the end game is there.
Stuff slows down at 40 and everyone goes to CoM then for some shenanigains. Some quit (or like me reroll cuz I have dreaaams) but it's what it is )
Glad to have had some friendship yesterday in nektulous =)
Best way to enjoy this server is independently, doing the things you love in EQ, for nostalgia.
Or alternatively, with a crew. Which is what APex and Perdition are. Sanctuary has a bit of a crew internally as well. But they are more open and less clique. So will pug often. Tho, around 30 about 1 week ago I got a pug on my cleric in paw with totally random people not in sanctuary.
It's just not something you can plan for unless you have a crew like i said ). THe levels will fly by fast, so you will have some downtime catching up skills and re-leveling defense, and farming plat for spells. etc... it's a little less natural and progressive like it is on blue were it takes 5 days to get through 20-30. (without a snare and DS machine)
I'm on the fence about the fast pace, it hurts. Sometimes. Sometimes it's real nice. I don't have 3 years to hit 60 again maybe so, I'm not bitching.

DBStrong it sounds like you are having fun on the server and despite the low population you can definitely relive some of that original EQ adventure. I've been playing for probably 8-9 months after a long hiatus and I am really enjoying myself too. A necro is really a great option to make your way to 60 as they are plenty strong in PVP and can solo a lot of content that will allow you to raise your funds and camp gear. For spending the money that you gain I would invest in some resist gear so that when you do encounter PVP, most likely in your 50's (and there is plenty of it if you know where to look) you won't get stomped. Definitely find a guild and get on discord so that you have a closer connection and better communication with the people who do play on the server.

I made my Iksar Necro named Guldur first- simply out of starting with the most familiar class, and experimenting in a new 'newbie' land. However, he's losing the battle for attention to my L8 Half-Elf Bard named Lindale. He's made it out of the newbie yard and into QH, and even BB with some assistance from an awesomely kind Druid named Bistre; not sure of the spelling on that... might be Birste. Anyway, she passed along a couple lowbie pieces which were great upgrades from the cloth, or empty slots I had; also a Sac Dagger, another clear upgrade for me. Her PotG, Regrowth, and Thorns made me an extra stabby dynamo! haha Ran into BB like I owned the place... well, at least the top floor.
Other than the SD for piercing, I'm still swinging my *short sword, and also a good ol' cracked staff to practice 1hb. That piece is also an investment for when I'm a pp short of my next song. lol. It's going to the pawn shop!
Most of my playing time is Central time mid afternoons- when I get it. Playing time on evenings and weekends, which I know is 'prime time' is very scarce for me, but I do get it on occasion. Wish I had more availability, but RL is Real, and EQ is still a game.

I think Tass is a fine guy but hes sick of the forum and tired of people trying to be positive. He's not wrong. We're all checking for a new server and literally been begging for someone to put us out of our misery for over 5 years.
They have the ability to do it and don't and we just keep hoping there comes a time when they decide to do it.
Its theoretically possible for someone else to make a good project 1999 emulator box that looks like real everquest, but it has taken Nilbog and team over 10 years to get to where we are today and without a lot of money to waste you won't get there any faster. So the smart option is to beg.
So thats what we do.
In the mean time I still like the game and everyone else on it. Tass is just done. I understand and its not because hes a megalong poopsocker jerk hes just a normal person who has had enough.
You can't criticize him for checking the forums because this is where we can find out about the next server.
