Full disclosure, I haven't played EQ since it went live decades ago. I don't remember a thing. I've played many games since then but always love the older school styles that don't hold my hand or can solo from 1st to max.
I have tried a few times to get started here but I'm really lost. Any basic tips to get started from day-1 and not be completely lost?
1. Suggested good first class/race?
2. Friendly(er) starting areas?
3. Do(s) and don't(s)
4. A friendly guild(s) who accept stray dogs?
Thanks!

Id go for a race with night vision, the east common tunnel off of freeport is packed with people willing to help, give out advice or hand out guild advice. There are a few guilds made just to help level and teach newer players, although most people in general tend to be helpful.

Welcome Back!
I encourage you to browse the https://wiki.project1999.com
It has a huge amount of information to better help players make informed decision.
There are even class guides. :)
That said, East Commonlands is the main trade hub. Joining a leveling guild is a great way to make the world feel bigger.
Do: talk to people. A large majority are very friendly.
Don’t: be a grumpy person when something goes wrong. A bad pull or something.
EQ, it is the journey.

Kittens and Castle are probably the two largest casual levelling guilds, although there are a ton of smaller ones (and of course I'm biased ;) ).
Best place to start looking is here: http://wiki.project1999.com/Getting_Started
And race/class really depends on your playstyle. I exclusively solo so all my toons are soloable characters (don't look at the ranger!). The 'good' aligned characters are generally easier to play as you can bank/sell at more places, but the evil classes aren't really that much harder (except maybe Iksars).
Welcome aboard!
edit: if interested in Castle just do a /who all castle and ask anyone if an officer is available. I assume you could do the same for Kittens who say Meow but I can't speak for them!
edit2: that link above is about installing client, I was thinking it was more getting started. not to worry, there's plenty of guides here (http://wiki.project1999.com/Players:Adventure) and the first couple are for EQ newbies.

which server are you starting on OP?

When thinking about the servers to choose between your options are three
Green: Solid server population, there was overcrowding early on and that could come back again as people come back in anticipation for Kunark launch. The green server is very close to true nostalgic Everquest in 1999. There are plenty of people in each starting zone to group with and some twinks/experienced ppl are working there way back through which can make your life easier. I’ve been playing on both quite a bit lately and it seems green’s server population tends to be less experienced and less cooperative. Still an amazing culture overall the greater competition is really a factor of limited resources. Kunark will increase xp zones by 50% and gear availability will go through the roof. Overall assessment great place to start for classic experience and considered the flagship server at this time.
Blue: low newbie zone populations. Expect to solo at least quite a bit anywhere you start on blue. That being said you’ll have the pick of the litter for camps and will level up quick. Also weapons that would make you a god on green are really affordable on blue. There are some reaaally nice quality of life perks on blue server such as custom UIs that just make the game less tedious in 2020, tab targeting, and a pet window. The culture is unbelievable with hundreds of experienced players who’d love to show you the ropes. Plus if you want to try raiding there is 3x the content as on green at the moment and a bunch of frat guilds to get you there.
Red is pvp and extra xp, but almost no population. Personally I can’t play a mmo without interacting with other players.
Blue or green are both great choices and welcome back!

I suggest avoiding rogue or warrior as a class for now.
I can recommend a shaman as your first character, because shamans can do basically a bit of everything and you can very early figure out by yourself what you like the most (nukes, buffs, healing, whatever)

1. Shaman, Enchanter, Druid are good first solo or group toons.
2. West Freeport is a great starting area. Just need a friendly port and bind, if not a human. Human very bad eye sight at night.
3. Have fun, meet new people, make mistakes. Don't take things personal if things go wrong in groups.
4. As others have mentioned. Adding Dawn Believers and Light House, I'm not sure, but tossing names out.

A great starting city is qeynos, if you want to learn about quests and get exp and plat from NPCs, if you want buffs and stuff from other players, freeport is the city to be in!

I would love to disagree with this because they are pretty common and I have a min/man form of autism, but man druids are fun!
Useful group class, top 2-3 pullers classes in outdoor zones, amazing fun charm soloing animas and get to quad. Oh not to mention constant source of many and adventure from porting. Yeah druids a great choice. Track becomes uber useful in later expansions.
....but as a warrior you get...no no I’m gonna stop right there. Pick a good starting class like Druid, necro, mage, etc. .

This is good advice. An int caster that you can level nearly naked, a druid has benefits. Shout out to the cleric class too, you're valued all the way to max level and items are secondary (but definitely help).

Get used to using the consider system. This is a system that gives you a relative gauge of the monsters difficulty. You can change the hotkey to "con" a mob in options Alt+O
Consider System Explained (https://wiki.project1999.com/Consider)
Intelligence casters: These are less gear dependent, these are Magicians, Enchanters, Necromancers and Wizards. Out of this group I think Magician is a good first class.
Melee: Characters are straight forward with few skills starting out. Monk, Rogue, Warrior. Out of this group I would suggest a monk, very low gear requirement and good DPS.
Priests: Druid, Shaman and Cleric. Any of these are good for beginners since they can heal. Pick which you like theme wise.
Hybrids: Paladin, Bard, Ranger and Shadowknight. Hybrids are mixes of two classes. Paladin is like a Cleric + Warrior you get the idea. These classes I wouldn't suggest for a beginner but if you love the theme then go for it!
Use the wiki it's truly great, check out the guide section. And as others have said, ask questions.

Welcome to the Project!
First off, I would highly recommend bookmarking this webpage: https://wiki.project1999.com/Main_Page
I've been playing on P99 for years and I still use the wiki every time I log in.
Read about all the classes and races. There are lots of good noobie guides on there.
My opinion is to stay away from melee classes as your first character. They are most gear reliant. I'd pick one of the following to learn the game and acquire some platinum and if you really want to fund a melee later, life is better twinked. I'd order them by complexity (or how high the skill ceiling / involvement is to play optimally):
Simple
Mage, Cleric, Wizard
Medium
Druid, Shaman
Complex
Necro*, Enchanter, Bard
*Necromancer can be played rather simply, but to really optimize their full kit (charming Undead) its on about the same level as an enchanter.
As far as race goes...pick whatever you think is cool ans just assign your points correctly. Aesthetics are the ultimate end game and if you don't want to stare at a big ugly Ogre / Troll ass, then don't.
Loot everything that isn't too heavy, sell at a vendor that really likes you, make friends by grouping for XP (add them to your list and hit them up again later).
Never be afraid to ask a question. People are usually overly helpful.
If you want to play on Blue I can help get you started...but most people are going Green these days.
Simple
Cleric, Wizard
Hijack sub-question: :p
Of the two, which one is more suited for mostly solo leveling?

on that note be mindful if auto attack is set to A and you are trying to talk to a guild master about a quest :o
or just let it happen, its classic.

Play the class and race that you love the most. There is only a few classes and race combinations that are really GARBAGE, and even those in the end are just fine.
Really you want to play for maximum love of your own character and persona because in the end you get way more out of that than the pixels.
Be who you want to be.
If you want to min max be an ogre and any of its classes,
If you want to min max a monk or necro be an iksar
If you want to min max a rogue be a barbarian
those ones are all really easy.
The rest of the classes it doesn't make much difference what race you are. And even for all of the above you can and should choose a race you like best or home city you like best rather than one you hate just for the minmax.
Go with your heart, 1000%
You don't need help at all from level 1. Roll with whatever players that happen to be near you and enjoy the experience. Don't make long travels to optimise your leveling up unless you actually want to make the trip just for fun. The best way to is to go with the flow, and when you are tired of an area, leave it.
The best part of the game is exploring new spots and learning their dangers. Nothing beats deep dungeon crawling with a robust group of committed explorers.
When you're way past the point of no return and if your group forgets about that random wanderer you're all guaranteed to wipe and have to deal with like 2 hours of corpse recovery...thats the peak.
Also when you just cruise around your starter zone. That rules too. EQ rocks
You can level ALL characters with minimal effort with ZERO armor other than what you find all around you throughout the game. Don't listen to psychos that want to get you to level 60 ASAP so you can wait in line for loot like them. Misery loves company.

Sounds about right.
I just hate to see people waste their time and life trying to optimize their character spec sheet rather than having fun.
Obviously you don't want to invest your starter stats into intelligence or wisdom as a warrior or monk or rogue but besides that, its fine.

if you can find undead spots, cleric can do as well as a wizard solo. otherwise, wizard; but be prepared for long long downtime (30 second kills, several minute downtime) i suggest a race with hide, since that is superawesome for safe medding

I can definitely recommend Druid for a starting class. As a new player you will want to explore a lot and the ports and Spirit of Wolf help a lot in that respect, plus you can solo well without much of a gear requirement and without the complicated playstyle of class like Enchanter or Necromancer.
The other class I would recommend is Magician for a simple play style.
I would recommend against Enchanter or Necromancer due to complexity and against Shaman due to it being a very late-blooming class (34+)

Without Pet Window, Mage is far from "simple play style". Lots of macros to create to make the pet work. Same with Necromancer.
You can solo with almost all classes. Some better, some less. Cleric, Warrior, rogue should be avoided as a new players being solo often.

Having to set up 4 one-line macros doesn't mean it's not a simple class to play. :)

Its easy to NOT solo.
And it takes some time to SOLO a cleric but its totally fine. I did it for most of my career because of my bad play hours and life style.
Go with your favorite class.

Thanks for all the wonderful advice. I'm going to have to re-load the game as I had to reinstall Windows this last weekend. Think I will start with a druid on the Green server. I will no doubt look up those great guild suggestions once I get my feet wet a bit.
