Windows 7/10:

I didn't install under program files, I run as admin, and I use XP compatibility mode (sp2). I played windowed in a 4:3 aspect ratio and don't use any custom UIs.

I did what mcoy said (although I also use DuxaUI, GINA, nParse and zliz maps) and I was still having issues so I also installed WinEQ 2.0.

I still have occasional client crashes when zoning (and lost a jumpy robe last month doing a ground transfer, first time in 50 transfers so I count myself lucky) but they're pretty rare. I have another problem but I believe it's ISP related. Sometimes when I zone or log in it'll never actually zone me in, it'll hang on loading (or char select screen if I'm entering world). I think my ISP is dropping some required packet to finish loading because if I turn on my VPN it works the next time I try.

After time you learn to live with the occasional crash. It's a ~20 year old client that was written for 3 OS's ago so I think it's doing pretty good.
