View Full Version : Non-camped soloing for level 12 necro

So after traveling to the places listed on previous soloing threads in the hopes of leveling my lvl 12 necro (and hopefully earn enough coin to buy spells and ANYTHING to upgrade my cloth equipment and cracked staff), I've found everything is already camped, even during off-peak hours. I know lucrative camps will be locked down frequently if announced on a public message board. I only have a couple hours a day to hunt, during off-peak hours, so soloing is my only option.
I was previously soloing spiders in North Ro (I hate them), but decided to make the trek to Faydwer. After repeatedly finding a certain camp taken, I tried the chessboard in Butcherblock and got quickly wiped out (had to kill basilisks to get back my lost level). Apparently my lvl 12 pet is awful and I'm no where near ready to take the chessboard. Any suggestions? PMs appreciated.

Relocate to Kunark, Kurn's Tower. Although heavily camped, I never ran out of mob when soloing there at this level. Added bonus: very fast xp and you won't have to farm more bone chips for a looooooong time.
I'll assume you mentionned solo due to some odd logging hours so I'll still propose some grouping options that will remain open to you whichever time you log in. You could give a go at:
- Sister's island in OOT. Great xp, great cash and the beauty is that at level 16 you can move to the island next to it and do the gargoyles for a massive amount of cash (at this level) up to level 20ish
- Befallen (careful there),
- Oasis (solo along the beach not far from a zoning),
- group in EC (always a group at the orc camps, even at the oddest hours),
- relocate to Blackburrow till 16
- Erud's Crossing, great spot for xp and cash, just don't die...
- Upper Guk (same comment as orc camps in EC although you could solo there)
- Lavastorm (doubt you meet a lot of people in there)
Hook me up in game if you need to relocate, I'll get you a free lift.

Oasis of Marr has a large lvl range that you could solo up in lvls from where your at to mid-late teens (and much higher if you don't get bored of it).
If your up for a change of scenery then travel to Kunark and head to Overthere just outside Cabilis is a great place to solo (don't get too close to the guards). Take the boat to FV and invis (con the mobs in FV as you go as some see invis) to Overthere then turn right along zone wall till you see buildings with rock sidewalks all around them. You can park on the zone all and pull and kite up at the wall. (this may be a lil low for you I don't remember what lvl it played out but your there or very close).
Next spot I liked was straight in from there to the lake between the tower and the ruins and kiting along the shore. (bind near FV in a safe spot off the creek). That camp will take you to 16-17.
From there I passed up the FV zone and went to just past the next set of buildings with statues all around and pulled mobs from the field and kited along the zonewall to the left. (takes you to 18-20 depending on where your pulling from in the field). You can kite along the water as well past the buildings (other side) which has higher mobs.

Yeah, this is true...but Oasis is really only efficient from about 16-17 or so. I found the exp there got a LOT slower after that point.
Remember that Necros are nearly always better at killing undead crap than living stuff.

As you are already in Faydwer, perhaps try Steamfont over by the entrance to the Mines. I did very well there soloing a mage at that level. Tons of mobs which you can pull to the wall to fight safely.

You have to go to Kurn's. The exp is ballin, and I still have stacks of bone chips saved up at level 30. If I wanted to sell and bank, the OT outpost isn't too bad of a run if you bum a sow. Kurn's was good exp all the way til 18, and would've probably taken me further if I didn't go for a change of scenery. Think I went to aviaks in SK after that.
Heavily camped, full of twinks, trains and d-bags, but I never was stuck without mobs to kill. In the earlier levels (12-13), I'd sent my pet to tank, get it to ~90%, then dot and start healing pet. I was killing reds that way. Later on I found it was more efficient to aggro kite or fear kite with Spook the Dead. It doesn't last long enough to cause problems.
Enjoy.

better then 50% of what i've killed thus far has been living mobs. Really you don't come into being really great at undead over living till you get undead slow and some other spells. THough the low lvl undead nuke is nice.

Heavily camped is an understatement and at your lvl you'd be stuck at zoneline for the most part unless you get a full group with some a bit above you in lvl. I tried Kurns and with all the new players on Ikky chars it was just too busy for me. I got better xp soloing down in the pit kiting along the wall then in Kurns.

Wait... you're using your pet as a meat shield? Fear kite! NRO spiders and scarabs, WC wisps near EC zone line (sneaky decent cash "camp"). I'm pretty sure I did 12-16 in NRO kiting spiders and scarabs before making the trek alllllllll the way over to WK to do Misty at 16 (to 19, then move over to the Miller farm to kill scarecrows to get to 20 while working on your evo skill), but you can probably do her by 14 (perhaps 12). Make sure you get fear to stick and time it properly so it doesn't drop because she hits like a truck. You can kill the guard there to for pet weapons and extra experience.

Fear kiting at that lvl isn't mana efficient at that lvl unless your twinked. Agro kiting is better imo.

I'm just /boggle that at 12 you couldn't handle BB chessboard.... The King is the only mob that you wouldn't be able to take. Send your pet, let it melee until the mob is down to about 60-70% then ward dead to finish it off. Your pet heals quickly and you can throw a mend on it if you need. I was able to keep all but 1 of the spawns down doing this by lvl 11 (the last spawn was almost always occupied by a king. Nasty wizard, don't try him). Bishops can be annoying because you end up having to deal with their pet and may occasionally kill you, but you should still be able to send your pet on its pet and then ward dead down the bishop (it's a caster, you wanna kill it first).
I did this 8-12 and then moved to that camp you were talking about in Lfay, then from there to Oasis mostly. I tried the sisters island, didn't really like it. The sisters weren't roaming down toward the water often enough to pull when I wanted and it was too easy to get adds if you moved up the mountain to find some. They are good PP though, so even if you just stop by there for 10-20 kills that'll net you 10-20p to save for spells.
I wore full small cloth that I looted from mobs and a bronze dagger until I was lvl 30. Although I did buy a pair of +2int rings at lvl 14 or so from a guy in the oasis. I didn't start buying real stat enhancing equipment until level 30 though.

I have a 6 necro, and it seems like my pet has no aggro at all. If I cast any spell, or sometimes just sit, the mob is on me. Can the necro pet not tank until I level up some more, or am I doing something wrong?

oasis or lava storm are great at 12 try and get into najena as early as you can, I was able to solo the 3 skells at the entrance around your level just don't forget to use Numb the Dead, and you should be able to rock them out fairly easy at 12 or maybe 16th level.
If you feel brave enough you can try heading to Kurn's Tower, but it will be very crowded.
You will school the undead where ever you choose to fight, Best of luck.

Pet can't tank well or hold agro well till mid lvl's to later lvl's really. One thing that helps is Feign Death if you pull agro it clears it immediately. Then just stand back up and cast another dot after a few seconds.

No, they generate jack dick for agro (necros have been complaining about this for ages, pet agro is too low for classic). You have to make sure your pet actually hits the mob at least once before you can sit and not take agro, and you'll take agro instantly as soon you cast anything. At those low levels you just need to take advantage of your pets insanely high HP regen and let it melee the mob down a ways before you cast on it and then tank the mob the rest of the way down. It's the most efficient way I found to level up since pets seriously don't hold agro worth a crap at low level.
It started to get better at 39, but they're still not holding agro like they should (read the old leveling guides on casters realm via the wayback machine, at basically any level it should take 2-3 spells to take agro off your pet).

aggo kiting
- snare the mob and stack some dots to make it aggro on you. snare itself makes alot of aggo but some dots more is recommended, especially some debuff dots like heart flutter works great. now send your full buffed pet in with /taunt off. run a safe route with the mob following you, while the pet is hitting in the back. rogue pet is best dmg, but dies often if mob turns on your pet. sit and med shortly if you can. never let your snare run off and keep aggro on you with the most nastiest dots. on higher lvl mobs your lvl 4 fear is perhaps the most aggroing and low mana spell, and it gets resisted all the time). shouldn't be necessary to load if you are just soloing, but if 5 other PC are nuking and hacking on your mob.

As baalzy said, pet agro here is not classic. There have been several threads to try to illustrate this without any noticeable change. So necros have adapted to agro kiting. It's not really a solution for indoor zones but at least it works well when you've got open spaces.

Been agro kiting since Orig eq came out. Isn't something new to us.

Agro kiting used to take a little more then just looking at the mob in classic dude.
In live I would send my pet and lead with dooming darkness, having dooming land before my pet got to the target and the pet would take agro until i then cast at least boil blood on the mob.

Definitely sounds like you just aren't using the right tactics.
1 shot of darkness, sick pet and agro kite. Reapply darkness before it drops. You don't need any other dots, its a waste of mana. Keep dark pact up on you and you should be soloing yellows with ease.
Fear isn't mana efficient even with the ability to sit. Just go explore. Most of the spots people suggest on this board are going to be common solo spots and are likely to be camped. Just go any place with mobs around your level and agro kite them. Necros are very very powerful if you are using the right techniques.

I didn't say agro kiting is new. The difference here is it's pretty much your only option at certain levels. Particularly the lower levels when fear and root aren't available / practical.
It should take more than a 1 or 2 spells to turn a mob onto you to the point where you can drag it all over zone with pet beating on it until dead but never taking back agro. It actually makes agro kiting a fantastic, mana efficient strategy but reduces the options when it's necessary for pet to keep agro and tank for you. That's not what I remember as classic and not what the classic necro guides seem to indicate.

Thats what the "Taunt" button on your pet display is for. To turn it off!

1) Duh, but taunt wouldn't work unless you were fighting a mob lower level than you anyways (until taunt gets patched, sometime in velious i believe, to work on mobs above your level)
2) I WANTED my pet to take agro for a little bit
3) It's not working like this on P99 the way it was on classic
Shadey, you've been posting a lot in the 3 days you've been here but you seem to be failing to grasp a fundamental aspect of this server. The fact that it's supposed to be emulating how EverQuest WAS, not how it is.

Been here a lil bit more then 3 days. But not much. And I played from the start of eq up till it was completely ruined. So I do remember the "Classic" eq and it is what I've always preferred. So I'm not quoting how it is. I'm quoting how it "was" for me during this time. And agro/fear kiting was a staple for me.
Oh and i've not been on EQ1 live since Depths of Darkhallow first came out. That expac is what did it in for me for good. So I have no idea how it "is" currently. I'm sure much worse then when I left. LOL

Zoneline area isn't really bad though. When I was there, I was never running around looking for a mob. People are always around, but spawns are fast and plenty. I did spend a lot of time in the basement early on since I wasn't KOS to the burnyais. You'll be KOS if you kill one so you gotta be careful, but the skelly's down there are interspersed and easy to aggro or fear kite.
I think I did 11-18 in 2 nights playing in Kurns, made good cash for that level, and got 2 bags full of bone chips. Can't really ask for more.

As an Shadow Knight, I can give you my soling path (as if an SK can solo it, a Necro surely can)
On classic, Kunark was what did the trick..I spent a lot of time in OT, then I moved on to LOIO and it was all about fear kiting for me. The wide open spaces in OT and LOIO were perfect for it, and there was never any shortage of places to work from.
In fact once I got to Kunark, I did not leave again till I got to L46 (and could join raids) and it was mostly solo. In the later levels I hung out in places like BW, FoB, and EJ.
I also did a LOT of soloing in later levies ..INSIDE Kaesora, as well as the entrance to Chardok, and the entrance to Sebelis, hell I soloed all of Kunark that could be soloed (spent a LONG time obtaining the Greenmist..by long time think..Dark Elf..DE who got a Geenmist.)
LOL I spent a LOT of time collecting bone chips and visiting the guards outside Cabilis.
anyway..long story short..Kunark is where its at for soloing. get yourself to Over There and don't go back.
