I live just 45 minutes north of Portland and drove down there to see what all the fuss was about. Now if you listen to the news, they would have you thinking that its all a bunch of peaceful protestors with just a handful of bad apples ruining it for everyone.

I am hear to tell you, it is not just a few bad apples. It's like I was viewing Kurt Russell's Escape from New York in live action. This was in the day time mind you, I cant imagine what a turd show it must be at night.

I know Portland has always been weird, and has had a growing homeless population over the past several years, but this is just something else.

I had a similar experience in Boston. You hear on the news about how its just a bunch of peaceful protestors, but there were people literally dumping crates of tea into the harbor. Tea! Tea that didn't even belong to them!

We were watching this film "Midsommar". I'm not sure what to think the entire time I'm watching the film. Not until the point where they paralyze the antagonist's boyfriend, put him in a bear suit, and lite him on fire. Then it clicks; I'm the jackass in the bear suit and this movie is the Swedish village lighting me on fire.

The Feds involvement in Portland is not the same as what has happened in the past IE Waco. The biggest difference I can see is simply geographical in nature. In Waco, it was the feds that raided private property (which ownership is protected by the 5th amendment)

Conversely, in the situation with Portland, it is the Feds that are protecting private property, federal property and the right for all to access public property.

Since I drove down there last week it appears to have gotten a lot worse. Again, Portland has always been a weird place with an abundant homeless population. (see google street view) 1450-1420 N Victory Blvd, Portland, OR 97217

The street view is typical of what you find in Portland, homeless encampment with pan handlers looking for quick cash for meth, heroine etc. Its been like this for the past 2 decades, but definitely a growing and unsustainable problem since 2008.

It is very different now though. Again, I liken what I saw to Escape from New York, the only difference is that the low life rioters still have a host to suck the life out of, the host being the hardworking American. Pretty soon that will change too, as the decent folks that are still in the Portland area will get the hell out of there and move to greener, less destructive pastures.

Yes the soviets did at the end come up with a tank design superior to the panzer IV after they captured a bunch, and produced many more of them, as you said, Toward the end of the war. Initially the soviets were routed by the Nazis and really only survived because hitler didnt understand tactics and at that point stopped letting his generals make the big decisions. He split off some the force headed toward moscow to head south and first take kiev. bad move. Nazi forces were within artillery range of the kremlin at one point and should have rolled on it. Shortly after group north taking leningrad (and being immediately surrounded) some of army group center and all of south were sent to the balkans, because they were running out of oil. Now Nazi all forces on the soviet front are fractured. Hitler then decides he wants a mostly superficial victory in the taking of stalingrad. This is where they ran into their first real soviet challenge, which stopped them in their tracks and locked them in an urban warfare stalemate. Hundreds of thousands of soviet troops were hurled into this quadmire and the surrounding territories in order to buy time for the new soviety military tech to catch up. In near total secrecy the soviets prepared a massive force across the volga river and then performed a pincer to encircle the troops besieging stalingrad. Cut off from anyone, the Nazis eventually surrended against hitlers wishes. Then the soviet steam roller with its new tanks and other equipment employed brute force and deception warfare and gradually at first, then gaining momentum, pushed the nazis back to germany. Over the course of this we saw the biggest tank battles ever and, many hold, dig in, defend, retreat tactics on behalf of the nazis, inflicting grave casualties on the advancing red army. Eventually the red army reached berlin, at a cost of 5,226,800 killed in action only counting the advance to berlin.

I think you may be mistaken about the tanks. The Soviet T-34/76 that they had from the start of the war was superior to the standard German tank during 1941 (the panzer III) and is usually regarded as more or less a match for the Panzer IV. The T-34/85 might be the one you're thinking of that came later on in the war, but that was simply up-gunning the tank the Soviets had been using since the start of the war. The KV series and IS series of heavy tanks were comparatively few in number relative to the T-34's.

The German style of tanks were regarded by the Soviets as not wholly suitable for conditions on the Russian front. The type of running wheels that the German tanks used had a tendency to get jammed up by mud and snow.

Not much relation to unrest in Portland, admittedly. Internet forum threads are funny that way.

what i had read was that 38 federal agents were doxxed creating a threat to their families and theirselves. So they started operating under generic "police" tags. DHS mentioned rather quietly that it was a combined effort of CBP, ATF and DEA.

I'm not sure why the courthouse was chosen. My brother hasn't been participating in the protests, he's just been in the vicinity due to work, so he doesn't have a lot of inside info.

I did live in Portland for 34 years before moving abroad a few years ago for work, so probably 80% of my facebook feed is people who are from Portland or who live in Portland. A huge portion of my feed for the last month has been constant protest updates, photos, people livestreaming the protests, and information about medic stations and meeting points. My impression from what I'm seeing from people who are actually participating is that it is mostly unplanned and a lot of decisions are collectively decided as events are unfolding. So, as for "choosing targets", I haven't seen/heard of anything like that. My guess is that it's just a symbol of the justice system. /shrug

Obviously, I'm not personally present, so this is all second hand knowledge, but the sheer volume of what I see/read on a daily basis makes me fairly confident that I at least have a better grasp of what's going on than what's in a lot of the media stories circulating.

It's like they are trying to downplay the severity of the damage as to make the original intent of the protests more meaningful. Antifa is not a thing outside of the Fox News studios.

There was some time in the late 80s early 90s that anti-facist participants in the Minneapolis punk rock music scene went to war with the skinheads. Do some people call themselves Antifa? Probably. That doesn't make it a thing any more than the American Society of Time Travelers.

There were less than 200 by most accounts the last time "Antifa" tried to hold a national rally.

I didn’t say a thing about that though. I suppose I should clarify that I do not believe that either liberalism or capitalism have been corrupted, nor do I believe that the problems we face are uniquely modern. I don’t believe that there is much of a movement for liberalism in the US. I think that it is mostly what we have and people from both sides are trying to tear it apart.

To respond to the Smith quote though, I would have to know more of the nature of landlord rights in the 18th century among other things. I know very little.
