Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals for the SNES

Pros:
- Funny, nice story
- Great turn based RPG combat system
- Unique "IP" system in which worn items had special effects that built up whenever you were hit (it was a bar below your HP and Mana, it went up as you get hit, items then spent some amount of your "IP" to use their effect. These ranged from spells you'd get throughout the game, to extremely unique effects)
- Unique pet system in which you feed your pet gear and it gains strength, evolves, grows larger.
- Built-in Rogue-like game that provided some of the best gear in the game, a fully randomized 99 floor dungeon in which you start out at level 1 with no gear and gear up as you go. Items found in "blue chests" can be taken out and taken back in later, so multiple runs get easier as you get better and better blue chest items.

Straight up, it's the standard I hold every RPG to.

A close second is Breath of Fire 2, their town building system and character modifications was super interesting.

That's a tough question, but for me possibly The Magic Candle on DOS. Final Fantasy (original on NES) might be second, and maybe Fallout 3 for third?

Same game imo. I actually have a working genesis and SFII cartridge.

The major difference is that, although I've played II multiple times, which was an epic game, I can only remember the first game's battles and characters.

Hmm. I don't know about that. SF2 had way more characters and options/game impacting decisions. It also had a much bigger world you could actually actively explore instead of SF1 where you just move from scenario to scenario entirely on rails. I'd say it's comprehensively better than 1. The only slight knock on it for me is how early you get the bird dude and how brokenly powerful he is. I remember I used to intentionally leave him in his first form/class/job but I can't remember why.

jk, real answer is difficult. Chrono Trigger and Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past are nostalgia favorites, but I haven't played them in so long, I'm not sure how they would match up to more modern games.

Even though it was full of bugs, I spent a stupid amount of time in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

I'm not gonna go off quality of game going to go off of pure nostalgia and child like joy:

Shining Force 2 - Rented this as a kid, Kraken battle on boat was super epic.

Shining Force 1 - The entire game, played it back as an adult and beat it in college.

Super Mario RPG - Just a game that was so well done, very few parts were not just "fun".

Final Fantasy 1 - Played the OG and Remaster as an adult, feels good.

Breath of Fire 3 - Remember playing this as a young teen on PS1 I think, awesome soundtrack, cool dragon abilities.

Baldurs Gate - I sunk so many hours on this as a teenager, came with our gateway PC in 2000!

Daggerfall, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fallout 1/2 are all other games responsible for stunting my social development as a child. Shining Force was special to me because it's the one I was playing when I got stuck home sick with bronchitis in 7th grade and decided that school fucking sucks. I'm gonna play video games for the rest of my life.

Fallout 1 and 2 aren't games you'll spend thousands of hours on, they're a very well curated experience. I'd expect at most you'd push maybe 100 hours on each, but the ride is so fun and well done. If you enjoy creating new characters, there's just so many ways to navigate every situation and the writing is so, so good.

Can't believe i didn't mention daggerfall and morrowind. Daggerfall by far was amazing for what my tiny 8 year old brain could fathom. All the quests and the haunted king and orc fortresses, very intimidating and definitely can't forget the titties in the temple.

Morrowind might still be the pen-ultimate open world RPG. Skyrim looks shiny and is fun to play, but lacks the depth that chat dialogue vs. voice acted loops can offer. The world and towns are so small in Skyrim you have to constantly use your disbelief suspend to feel even slightly immersed. Oh this is your capital city? population 50.

Enough Bethesda rants, heres a link to daggerfall unity, enjoy! This is without a doubt, the daggerfall we didn't know we needed, and wish we had as kids! https://www.dfworkshop.net/

*chomps a TES game mod*

but yeusss

Also, problematical when it takes 4 hrs to hike across the capital city, unless you place the entire game there. I once had a open world sandbox adventure in Washington, DC. I covered 20 miles in one day. It was a real adventure. I'm glad the Skyrim capital city isn't that big.

It could stand to be bigger and more immersive for sure.

I'm really angry there isn't an undersea argonian enclave somewhere where you can do quests that are an alternative to the main plot to secretly manipulate the empire, stormcloaks, and those crazy advent elfs.

*chomps a daggerfall cricket*

They should have left stats in Skyrim. Having a personality stat and making it matter and be a choice between that and even more hps adds more depth to the +10 hp basic mode of gameplay.

A daggerfall minecraft mod where the daggerfall world was rebuilt as a custom world would be kinda neet lol.... and a stat skill system implemented.

The scale they set for Daggerfall running on a freaking DOS platform still blows my mind. 100+ political factions. Multiple countries with different cultural aesthetics in clothing and architecture. Holidays. Diseases. 50+ regions. Infinite quests with procedural generation of dungeons. A main quest you're never gonna finish. 20 epic god quests. Get a loan from the bank. Buy a house. Buy a horse. Buy a boat. Rob a store. Go to jail. Be exiled from a town. Be a Vampire. Be a werewolf. <3 this game.

Back when I used to want to make video games, this game always served as my model of what's possible.

I was having a totaly unrelated convo about how much I liked Vandal Hearts, and couldnt get into Ogre Battle, or FF tactics. But they are great games.

Warsong was another great strategy game from the old days, it's actually my first one!

Phantasy Star series back on Sega and Ultima 7+8

My fave RPG of all time though man im thinking hard right now, I think its Phantasy Star II because that just was a formative game for me, and I love the look of the sci-fi, I feel its never been repllicated, like EQ, its been attempted but never quite captured what it was that I loved about it.

But hard nods to part I and part III both runner ups! Also Final Fantasy 2 (I thought 3 was bloated and had less heart than 2 IMO) is another close contender. Zelda for the Snes changed my life as did zelda for the Nes! This is tough!

https://i.imgur.com/wPt9iVg.gif

Another major contender for me was Sword of Vermilion, It took me 15 minuets to realize I could just turn off my system after saving because it didn't go to the main menu, I was very young. :)

What about gameboy games, there were a few RPGs there that totally blew my mind!

My favorite was a cross between Zelda & Final Fantasy, but they also had legends which was more traditional, and just as good as the old final fantasy games.

It felt like to me playing final fantasy on a gameboy was like holding ainchent tombs in my hand, it was so much more personal and magical to me.

Because then rpgs had content, massive ammounts of options and choices to be made.
skyrim sums up what is totaly wrong with modern rpgs, the fact they are not rpgs but hack and slash with shiny graphics some glued storyline and few else things .

i remember a early 90s rpg i cannot say name because i dont know it exactly but i think was published by bullfrogg,

the premise of the rpg was simple robinson crusoe in space, u crashed in a alien planet and u have to survive 3 years before a resque ship comes to you ,
u had a whole planet to explore , u just had 1 life and the game actualy did deleted ur saves if u died .
i still have 2 sketchbooks full of hand made maps , notes about terrain what u could eat or not ,and about 200 aliens species u find in the game .

it took me 1 year to finish up the game and be resqued,

best storyline, music and combat of any game I had played up to its release. Everything before Diablo felt like a digitized version of a card game.

Seiken Densetsu 3 (aka Secret of Mana 2)

Was released in japan only, so we had to wait for a fan translation here in NA, but it was well worth the wait. More of an action-rpg, comes with a cast of 6 characters from which you choose 3 to form your party. Each has a class unique to their character with the ability to class change twice (4 final classes for each character) so a decent amount of customization and great replay value. There's also three different final dungeons based on whom you choose to be your main char and a final boss unique to this decision. The story ties together quite well as long as you can look past the questionable points in the translation (they did a good job overall but it's still rough around the edges.)
I put a ton of hours into this one, running full melee teams and full magic based squads. The music is great, its light-hearted with some sad moments here and there. The cut scenes could have used a bit more work in my opinion, as well as a few spells being bugged to the point of uselessness, but overall its a great playthrough. Two player compatible too (as well as 3 player with a patch on the emulator!)

Terranigma was a hidden gem too, a pseudo sequel to Soul Blazer/ Illusion of Gaia. More of an action-rpg again with an amazing story, for anyone who loves history this game will satisfy that itch. I don't think this one was released in NA either, but it's definitely worth checking out. It's a bit of a brain teaser as well, I had a hard time to playthrough without looking up a guide from time to time.

On the topic of games we never got in NA (until later at least,) Final Fantasy V was a great installment to the series. A great job system (the game where they perfected it) with a jovial story and awesome world transitions. Maybe there's a few holes in the plot but overall its good and the characters have a decent amount of depth to them (albeit its mostly in optional cut scenes)

Here's a controversial one, and a skip from the Snes platform to Playstation: Chrono Cross. I loved it, I thought it had a great and complex story, the battle system was fun, but my favorite aspect of this game was the soundtrack. The music of this game is by far my favorite of any game. Maybe there's a few characters too many in this game, but it was still great to collect the vast cast and see their unique skills put to use. The visuals were great for its time and it certainly wasn't a walk in the park. Better than Chrono Trigger? Definite no. Still a great game imo.

Yeah, Trials of Mana is the remake of Seiken Densetsu 3. Haven't played it myself so I can't comment on how it holds up. It looks like they overhauled the combat system pretty much, which is nice because a carbon copy remake is kind of boring.

1. Phantasy Star 4 (Genesis)
2. Zelda - Ocarina of Time (N64)
3. FF7 (PC/PS1)

PS4 I've replayed a few times. If you haven't played it, I highly recommend it.

Final Fantasy Tactics for sure, I loved the combat and how vibrant the game was, and there's so much replay value being able to do it with all kinds of different character setups and self-challenges, right down to the ultra hard mode of only using 1 character with a solo class as your whole party. Requires a lot of learning about movement and timing to do it, and feels very epic when you beat the game like that (even if some fights essentially come down to constantly resetting, in order to hit a super low probability chance of dodging attacks or whatnot). There are emulated versions with different game mods too, for more challenging full-group based content.

Baldurs Gate 1 & 2
Might & Magic 6 (few years ago I played Might & Magic 11 and it was very nice as well)

My first RPG was Landstalker on a Sega Mega Drive (kind of like Zelda)

The Witcher 3. It's the best game I've ever played, period.

Mass Effect 2 was also pretty dope.

I got a copy of Oblivion during deployment. I had spent the first 6 months or so with no internet, no books etc. My parents sent me a laptop and a copy of this game, and it was a huge escape for me at that time. I remember being so into it that I figured out a way to TAPE the keys on my keyboard down to max athletics and acrobatics while I was out on patrol...

My favorite was 1987 rocky balboa on Sega. Used to play it in the barracks in between push ups.

Sounds very familiar. I play with an aluminum pull-up bar about 10 feet behind my computer chair and I STILL do sets pull-ups, push-ups and squats in between pulls (the only perk to playing a Cleric who spends 90% of his existence sitting stationary).

The best single-player RPG of all time was Ultima III because it arrived at exactly the point in my life where I would believe that shit. Before that I didn't understand and after that I was just playing games and min-maxing the outcome. But for a brief moment in the 80s I was that guy and these were my friends and we were doing that quest.

u call that a rpg? it was a hack and slash

Yeah I noticed a lot of people are posting adventure, action adventure, and RTS's and not actual RPG's
For me:
WRPG: Morrowind
JRPG: FFVII (Honestly toss up between that, FFIV, FFVI, or FFIX).

After some nostalgic reflection, going to have to go with this 'desert island' list...

Fallout 1/2/New Vegas
Baldurs Gate 1/2/Icewind Dale
GTA San Andreas

and the 'nostalgia but don't really need it on my island' list:

Neverwinter Nights 2
Ultima II/III
Questron I/II
Phantasie I/II
Telengard

Amazing game. My dad sent me his Genesis with that when I was a kid. It was so epic for its time and kinda still is compared to today's games.

Earliest RPGs I can remember wasting time on rainy days would be a 3-way tie between Gold Box D&D Pool of Radiance game (1988), Ultima 3 (1983) on an Apple II C PC with the monochrome green tones monitor as well as the original Final Fantasy (1987) on Nintendo.

Favorite of all time is tough. Probably a tie between the original Fallout (1997) and Dragon Age (2009). They were slightly more mature in their content and felt like your decisions really had an affect on the story. In comparison, most of the JRPGs that were the most popular during the 90's/2000's seemed like a simple linear innocent plot much like going to Disney World and riding the Peter Pan ride by the time I was a teenager and older.

it would be a toss up for me between a few. The witcher 3 is a fantastic game. The first Dragonage is a masterpiece. Chrono Trigger, The Secret of Mana, and Zelda for SNES are also masterpieces. I bought the remastered Chrono Trigger and The Secret of Mana for pc and they both still hold up very well imo. If I had to pick one it would probably be Chrono Trigger but they are all so close.

Speaking of great single player RPGs. next weeks fre games frm epic has the shadowrun collection. Not only great RPgs in their own right, but also the early console RPGs, both the genesis and the SNES were great. Me and my friend used to constantly argue which was better back in the day on the bus haha.

The soundtrack for the snes version is real good. I own a complete in box of that and many other classic snes/genesis games

Also speaking of RPGs, the fact that the new Baulders Gate will be turn based is a total let down and deal breaker for me.
