EQ crashing

During Login game freezes up.
Random crashing while zoning.
Zone freezing till game times out and boots me to login

This is done w/ my regular EQ install with enhanced graphic installs.
AND a completely NEW clean install w/ only P99 required files installed


This all started after the other days fiasco w/ the servers not showing up.

Same here started today... I even uninstalled and did a fresh install. No matter what I freeze either logging in or first time I zone.

+1, don't think it has anything to do with windows defender though. Haven't updated that in years.

This is getting ridicules, getting to the point of unplayable.

Can't zone w/o crashing, Empty char select screens, chars not loading, Login error - DB error - Invalid password, crashing after camping, freezing after Enter world after selecting char

Anyone found a fix for this yet? It started for me yesterday and is very aggravating to almost unplayable unless i stay in one zone

Presumably you have tried putting the game into XP SP2 (or 3 whatever) compatibility mode?

If not goto the games folder and right click the EQ exe file and goto properties and there will be tab for compatibility mode which you can switch to the above. This resolves a fair few bugs.

If not then try WinEQ2. That solved lots of problems for me, you can make a free account with the people who make it and use the windowed version free.

Hopkins - On mine those settings were done a long time ago. This just randmomly started happening. I play alot Tuesday, didnt play Wednesday and then tried to play last night and this started happening.
I will change the settings on my fresh install and see what that does.

Never used WInEQ so cannot comment on that.

I have also tried every compatibility option with the same results. Running as admin or not does NOT change the outcome. I have repatched to no avail, I have done a clean install and then repatched. Still disconnects randomly when zoning, and crashing when trying to login. I am getting extremely long zone times when i can actually login. If I am able to zone, I am soon disconnected (black screen with white writing saying You have been disconnected). Changing characters crashes me about 80% of the time. I do not use winEQ. I never have, just like Keldjor, my problem only started when the server showed blank a few days ago. I have completely disabled Windows Defender (antivirus and firewall). I have plugged straight into the cable modem and none of this makes a difference. I have Spectrum internet and use a Netgear modem.

last night was the first time for me. happened 3 times total out of maybe 10-12 zone loads...

And the client didn't crash on me, it just never finished the load. Didn't even get the 'this program is not responding'

The only times the client crashes on me is if I camp a character and try doing another character. That's about 1 in 10 times and yes, I've put eqgame.exe in compatibility mode.

I'm on green. Has been happening to me consistently since yesterday. Took 8 attempts to login today, would we either crash at zone in or crash at character select. Never happened to me before yesterday now it's happened 50+ times.

So who all has spectrum? On my spectrum net this is a problem. My has the same problem but if she uses her hotspot she is fine. I am going to test it with my hotspot to see what it does.

Seeing the other poster saying they had Spectrum made me think of this.

Just successfully tested my son and my account on my hotspot and no issues with either. Not sure what that means or what the problem is. I am going to reboot my modem and try again with Spectrum.

Apparently spectrum has major outages in the NE. I wonder if it's impacting this.

Tried resetting everything it didnt make a difference. Got on my Spectrum app and had them do it and it didnt make a difference.

Not sure whats going on... Im in the SE and there are almost no outages around me.

Well hello there my brethren North Carolinian's!

I rebooted my modem and router again. Same thing. Speed tested Ookla w/ a 13ping 485mb D/L and a 22.3 U/L.

Logged into game and F11 for the packet bar.

Getting 61MS and % was dropping to around 98% but kept getting black spots in the green bar. A 3sec spell just took around 40secs to finally cast.


Shall we initiate a raid on Spectrum? Set them on a course for a quest?

Not in NC, but on spectrum, crash after selecting server. Wasn't planning on playing, just figured I'd check and report. Tried VPN through New York, crash. Tried VPN through UK, was able to log in.

Most likely Spectrum has had to do so "not-so-normal" routes for sending traffic, and it doesnt agree with something. I recommend trying a Free VPN program such as this one:

Alternatively a lot of mobile phones/plans allow you to run a mobile hotspot which turns your phomes wireless data into a WiFi hotspot that you can presumably connect to from your PC, assuming you have a WIFI adapter on your PC.

This started happening to me, literally this exact stuff. Started with me this past Thursday 2-6-2020 when i tried logging in that afternoon/evening.

I've had these issues every day since.

....and I'm in the Carolinas as well and on Spectrum. I'll try a hotspot this afternoon and see if that fixes it.

I live in Michigan and use a new ISP in our area named Wow internet. We have the same problem and have had the same problem for months. The VPN solution works for us.

Since this is not an issue for the server or our own systems, I don't expect a resolution soon. As stated above, we've had the problems for months.

Looking through these 6 pages, I don't see any mention of trying alternative DNS servers (Google DNS or OpenDNS for instance). A lot of times unless changed your router or computer will default to your ISP's DNS servers and that could be the cause in your issues.

So, i tried logging on regular last night - this is my laptop hitting my home wifi.

Login get held up.

I hotspotted my cell phone. Logged my laptop into my cellphone hotspot. No issues logging in and zoning was as quick as it was prior to last week.

So I can say, at least for me on Spectrum in the Carolinas, the hotspot via cell phone worked for me.

Question for all you folks a lot smarter than me - If my cell phone is connected to my house wifi, and I hotspot my cell phone and connect my laptop via that, am I using my cell phone data for my eq connection or is it just coming off of my house wifi?

Interesting question that I am not sure the answer, but I will tell you this, the amount of data that a 20 year old game such as EverQuest uses is nothing compared to just about anything you would be using data on today. I used to phone data hotspot and connect to Project 1999 and play for months at a time, never did it once notice it affect my 4g data "bucket".

The problem arises when you run out of 4g from your other normal use and then you try to play on 3g speed. Well, if you want a more classic experience connection-wise, there it is right there!

Tonight, Tues Feb 11, i've had no issues so far with spell lag or zone crashing. Maybe Spectrum getting the outage worked out.

For vpn I use torguard. I've used it for maybe 3 years now. Before that I used Private Internet Access for 2 years but their website was straight garbage. However, I pay 30 a year and it's usually more than that. But if you catch a 'sale' you can lock in that price. I use it mainly for torrenting and sometimes bypassing geo restrictions. Something cheaper may be plenty for p1999.

Was crashing constantly when trying to log in, zoning, exiting game.

At first I thought this was a population issue because I didn't crash as much during the day compared to evening.

Connected to VPN... boom, I'm in. No crashes whatsoever.

Immediate crash on log in last night without the VPN> VPN still works... At this point who knows if/when it may be fixed.
