View Full Version : Daybreak Games is splitting into three new studios
Horza

Rather than a single overarching studio, Daybreak will reorganize into three studios: Dimensional Ink Games, Darkpaw Games, and Rogue Planet Games. Daybreak will transition to a publisher. The changes will push three different “franchise studios” to the fore. These studios’ efforts will focus on DC Universe Online and legacy franchises EverQuest and Planetside. Absent from those plans is the studio’s youngest franchise, H1Z1.
Newly-minted Dimensional Ink Games will be headed by chief executive officer Jack Emmert and based in Austin, Texas. The studio will focus on DC Universe Online and an unannounced new MMO project. Darkpaw Games, based in San Diego, California, will be led by executive producer Holly Longdale, and will maintain the EverQuest franchise and “the next innovation for the franchise.” Meanwhile, executive producer Andy Sites will be responsible for San Diego-based Rogue Planet Games and continue work on the Planetside franchise. Everquest 3 based on Everquest 1 would be pretty awesome unfortunately daybreak did layoffs recently. It gives off the vibes they're scaling down to a skeleton crew just like UO did to keep the servers online.
New expansions will keep coming at a slow pace but it's about keeping the servers online for as long as possible in an ever expanding media market. Where people who were loyal customers move on or grow old and pass on. :(

A new EQ led by Holly Windstalker might be okay. Hopefully they allow some creativity rather than just funneling people toward microtransactions.

It's because you post like a fucking asshole which include breaking a lot of rules to be disruptive but the mods like galach seem to love you.

Hey ya'll check out this article (https://www.polygon.com/2020/1/21/21069503/daybreak-games-everquest-planetside-dc-universe-online-h1z1-new-studios) , Daybreak is no more, now the Everquest license belongs to Darkpaw Games. Will they enjoy having unpaid competition on their legacy product? Should we panic? Tell me how to feel-

Daybreak is still the publisher.

Because of the implications.
It almost sounds like the name an investor group comes up with who don't know source material.
"Hey guys what's a character thats not obvious, but sort of iconic but secondary for that one game were investing in"?
boom name. lol

I'd imagine Inception has finished raping their Daybreak properties, so they're splitting them into smaller parcels to sell off.

I bet to an onlooker who has no idea what Darkpaw is referencing will probably think the company is some type of furry studio.

Any thoughts on how this could effect P99?

Well at some point we'll have a giant Crowdfunder and just buy out the IP. So every step gets us closer to that Nirvana.

Why are they so obsessed with Fippy. Is it a metaphor of the companies future?
Unsurprisingly, our motto is “Never Give Up” given that our studio name is borne from our beloved in-game character, Fippy Darkpaw – the gnoll that won’t quit. For over 20 years he’s been fighting the good fight for his tribe.

Let's face it: if you keep playing the same game for 20 years, there has to be something wrong with you (as evidenced by the people in this forum, myself included).
But when you work on the same game for 20 years, that's when the true crazy comes out.

It depends on the degree of enthusiasm for work, as well as for the game. If it’s normal for a person, I don’t see any reason to talk about it.

Holly has been in charge at EQ for a long ass time, she was in charge when ragefire / phini servers came out, and probably for quite some time before that

How much is the Everquest IP worth at this point? If it's less than 1 mill we could probably crowdfund the entire thing.

A few years ago some laid off employee on FoH said that EQ1 brought in like 4 million a year. And in an interview last year Holly said that EQ1 has been increasingly profitable.

Holly Longdale is one of the coolest people I've had the pleasure of interacting with, and she's 100% on board with the emu community - she's even met with eqmule, the current maintainer of MacroQuest2, in person.
She understands her game needs to evolve to stay afloat and also pander to nostalgia.
She's awesome.

I personally think the Devs have been doing a good job on live, the last expansions have been a load of fun, even if i still hate the cash shop and the abomination that is followers.

Am I the only one excited for the inevitable sale to some big Chinese company, then the slew of predatory mobile games with an EQ skin that are sure to follow?
Wait, I'm not even excited for that either.

I had no idea PlanetSide and EQ had the same devs.
They never used to, but of course... if you want to keep your job in a company that scales back for 3-4 years straight, that's what you end up having to do.
It's Daybreak low key admitting they were shit at actually developing anything, and wanted to just milk their IPs until that got old. H1Z1 had a ton of potential but it was always too clunky and once the battle royale hit mainstream they were never going to get those players back without changing the engine.
The rest is just verging on embarrassing. PS2 was great in its day, but microtransactions killed the game....literally. EQ1 might have a small hardcore who'll always play a new server when it goes up, but for me you can't beat classic EQ with classic Freeport/content/items/looting/etc.
Good luck to these new studios, we all know they either aren't getting the funding to make anything amazing... or they'll themselves be seen on Kickstarter trying to get something together.
