Go into your EQ Project99 folder and replace the "spells_us" file with the one from today's patch.

do you happen to know the file name that was updated today with the patch? I sorted by dated found a few, but dont believe any of these files is what im looking for as its kinda vague issue. I can see the old spells_us.txt file but nothing named the same with a new time stamp. Appriciate your help and time!

What fixed it for me was instead of extracting the zip into your EQ folder, I extracted the zip into a new folder and then copied everything in that into the EQ folder.
Hope this works for yall

I am opening 2 windows when going to character screen and also having to accept the disclaimer twice now as well. I am receiving the same error message

i guess my confusion is where is this new file? was it automatically applied during the patch or do i need to patch it myself with a zip as you stated and if so i assuome the file is located on this form somewhere? Sorry for my ignorance first time dealing with a patch on these servers.

I have tried the above fixes with no results. I have tried them many times.

I'm also getting this error, even after re downloading the most recent p99files and extracting the spells_us.txt file. Running EQ using wine on Manjaro Linux and middlemand (for server list issues with linux)

Nevermind, I'm dumb. At some point I had downloaded the last patchfile instead of the most recent one. Solved lol

I just copied and pasted all patch files from the folders to their respective folders on my comp and just got in. I was getting the same error.

Still not working for me either. everything seems to extract and replace fine , but I still get the spells_us.txt problem at the char select screen. I have now tried everything and it just does not work.

Click home at the top left section of this page.
Should be a line with a couple of links last one reads. Get them here: Project 1999 Patch Files (V53).
Click it and unzip the file to your EQ directory and the problem should go away.

I did that a number of times, but still get the error message on the blue server on the players or toon list. Updated with replace. So I am stuck.
Has this worked for anyone? I am still getting the error after following all the recommendations I can find here on the forums. I was trying to read the txt file and cannot. Can anyone share the txt file they used that worked? When I open the V53 file im supposed to use to fix this it is unreadable. Its quite a lot of just symbols and what looks like just junk and no real txt.

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It worked. Here is what I did.
Got Patch 53 and did the patch and replace in the EQ Folder.
Then opened the Patch 53 folder and copy the Spells_us.txt file.
Then go to the EQ folder and open it. Go to Spells_us.txt file. Look at the date. If it is not today's date then copy the file you got from the Patch 53 file. When done, the date should have changed. Close everything and try loading EQ.
For what ever reason, the spells_us.txt was not uploading and updating. From what I can see.

I have the same problem. It was working a few weeks ago but I had to reinstall it due to hard drive failure. Fresh installation of Titanium, copied all the files (replaced destination files) from the patch and it complain about spells file being outdated. My spells_us.txt is the same as the latest patch.

When you open the spells file is it a bunch of japanese symbols and gibberish for you too?
Uh, that sounds like it's corrupt. Mine is human-readable:

So I've found out what happened. I had a DSETUP.dll and a dsetup.dll inside the folder. I'm playing on linux and by default, even on NTFS, it's still case sensitive, so it didn't overwrite. So to fix it, I now mount my NTFS drives with `lowntfs-3g` and with `ignore_case` option. This will make your NTFS partition appear all lower case in linux and ignore casing.

Yeah I figured that was the issue. It comes out like that no matter what I do. Opened the other text files and they seem fine.

Does anyone have a copy of the spells file? The one I download from here is always corrupt/gibberish. At a loss at this point. Hours of trying to troubleshoot it and nothing is working.
You're getting it from the Project1999 homepage via the link at the top? That's the one I pulled down and opened to get that screenshot: https://www.project1999.com/files/P99Files53.zip
There's a file size limit of 97k for zip files - and that file ends up being almost 500k compressed so it can't be attached here.

Ah, I just realized you may be using notepad to open the file. In that case then yes, it appears to be gibberish:

Sorry for leading you down the wrong path - I use notepad++ as my default editor so didn't think to check regular notepad.

Welp reinstalled and still no luck. I'm using the 4 steps to get started guide on youtube. Downloaded from the link there, then downloaded the most recent patch files and copied then into the p99 folder. Same error. My spells file at least looks normal now, even though I'm still just opening it using notepad.
account screen shows all the servers and the loading bar loads completely before the spells_us error, which makes me think the rest of the install and launcher is working fine. Just something with the spell files still.

Can you check that the file dsetup.dll has been overwritten? Are you playing from Windows or another system?

Yeah I'm playing on windows. The dsetup.dll file is dated 10/25/2019, but it's from the most recent patch.

Maybe it's a locale problem. Is your windows in any other locale than US english? Maybe it's trying to load spells_en.txt instead or maybe the locale is making it parse the version differently.
Is there even other localization than english for EQ? I'm not sure how it handle that part.

Nah I'm in the US. Did a lot of searching and it seems like this error tends to pop up for a small % of people, who seemingly eventually give up unable to fix it. Frustrating. I'd like to play but seem to have hit a brick wall.
