Hey all, I'd like some input on monk weapons. I'm an iksar monk, currently lv. 24, duoing with my pal (a 24 shm). I've come into some plat, and i'm looking at upgrading my weapons. Here's what I've been using:
sap of piety, fighting baton
adamantite bo stick
and if I were to upgrade I would go to either of these:
2 trance sticks
Wu's Quivering Staff
At first I ofc wanted a set of trance sticks, but I was told that once I get riposte and such, I'll duo way better with the quivering staff. Any advice or information would be appreciated. thanks!

Quivering staff will be much more bang for your buck than 2 trance sticks.

Wu's Quivering Staff Advantages: Higher DPS, less ripostes from mobs, better ripostes from yourself, less damage from DSes.
2x Trance Stick Advantages: Much better aggro.

I would tend to agree, but setting the price difference aside, I'd like to know if there's going to be a noticeable difference between the 1-h and 2-h options.

that makes teh Q staff sound pretty good.

What's the price difference between 1 Quivering Staff and 2 Trance Sticks?

My rough estimate puts 2 trance sticks at around 4kpp total, with a single qstaff at between 1.5k-2kpp total.

What lvl does trance stick proc? Until then it isn't really much of an upgrade. You will see instant results from the q staff.

Weird, on Tunare Quivering Staffs were like 2x the price of Trance Sticks. Maybe the rarity is a bit off here. Quivering Staff was definitely rarer than Trance Sticks.

Good point, procs at 35.

Ive been hunting in CoM since my shaman has gotten into the 50s, and ive been lucky enough to come across a quivering staff and 1 wu stick. my monk is 26, and it seems the 2hb does alot more dps at this point.
Later when damage bonuses are taken into account, i think the sticks might come out ahead because of the procs and quick ratio.

I was surprised when I asked around also. from what I gather, 1-h monk is more popular than 2-h, and demand drove the price of teh trance sticks up. Plus there are lots of 2-hb options that are competitive with Qstaffs, where trance sticks are basically 'the' cheap pre raid 1-hb as far as I can tell.

trance sticks proc at 35, which also is the level I will get riposte at iirc, so both weapons will see a boost at 35.

Aye, it's all about price ranges. Most people can afford 1-2k for alts on weapons. People aren't going to throw down 10k+ for jade maces and KDs, unless they're pretty well off. So, Trance sticks are pretty popular. Everyone wants to duel wield as a monk, and thats another reason sticks cost about the same as Qstaffs.

Well there are kind of three tiers of 1HB options atm, which is resulting in the Trance Stick popularity:
Low-end : 2x Trance Sticks (4-5k for pair)
Mid-range : MH Jade Mace, OH Knuckle Duster (~17k-20k together)
High-end : MH Adam club, OH Stave of Shielding (~37k-45k together)
Compare this to the 2HB market for Monks:
Low-end : Wu's Quivering (~2-2.5k?)
Mid-end : Runed Fighters Staff (~50k I think I saw one for atm)
High-end : Tstaff (Still ~100k-120k?)
There are a variety of options, I always kind of thought of Kunark as the "Monk X-Pac". The relative price levels are causing huge demand for the lower-end items.

To put it in perspective, Adamantite Club MH with Trance stick offhand barely out-DPSed my Baton of faith (30/40 2hb) at level 30.
Get the quivering staff.

Don't forget about Peacebringer for 2HB options.

Seriously. Peacebringer is always underestimated. One of those great pre- T-staff weapons my monk on live used.

thanks everyone, I've gone out and gotten a quivering 2-h at bargain price. I'm looking forward to wrecking things with it. :)

i ddi some parsing last night. level 38 monk with no haste
using quivering vs wu's MH and tranq OH
well the damage varied quite alot from fight to fight, but overall the quivering was outdamaged by the trancer/cane of tranq combo
the 2 weapon combo was just far more consistant. misses hurt the 2hb alot, and unless you got lucky with a series of repostes it just couln't keep up on a regular basis
I think part of the issue might be the fact that on live monks get a bonus to 1hb and 2hb over the base 5*lvl +5 that we get here. the extra 20 points would mean less misses with the 2hb and therefore flatten out the difference.
of course against DS mobs there is no comparison, and when you can use resposte discipline, 2hb will be godly. just at this lower level the damage bonus on 2hb isn't enough to warrent it. the price comparison however make it wuite good
adamantite bo stick is AWESOME aainst giants. i used one in WW at the fort, and with lucky procs i could drop a giant in seconds. the ae doesn't touch you it you stand at max melee range

How do you guys feel about Fighting Batons (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=103)?
For the monk on a budget, how reasonable is it to use 2x of them at level 40+? I had been using my fists since level 30 but recently grabbed this pair when I saw them at a very bargain price (combined total of 500pp).
I realize the proc of Wu's Trance Stick is great and the weight is halved, but would you say the Fighting Batons are a decent alternative?
I don't make much money nor do a level very quickly, and my current savings will hopefully be going to an FBSS. My gut tells me to keep saving rather than drain half of it on Trance sticks when I was able to spend so little on these Batons which feel pretty swift as-is.

I second this question. I appreciate the post earlier of low/mid/high costs for weapon combos. Like you, I'm just using fists, and whatever gear I'm wearing has been stuff that I've looted. And just in general, being a non-twink / non-alt Monk, getting any of this fancy-pants gear is a pain :)

8/20 was a better ratio then most people had until planar gear in classic. Don't see any reason why it wouldn't hold up for a while longer, just means you won't have to FD your agro as often IMO.

FB's are going for like 750 these days? that was the last price i saw in ec from memory, but it's been a little while since i was looking.
Cane of the Tranquil is not alot more at 1-1.5k and makes a better OH.
Nothing wrong with a pair of FB's though, they'll be nice and consistant on the damage

I sure hope it's less than 750. 500 for a pair sounds reasonable given the level of the dungeon, the quality of the weapon, and the frequency of the drop.
Plus if you think about it, if this were a non-twink server where everyone was lvl 1 but kunark was released, at 40 you'd only have outgrown Dalnir a very short while ago so would likely be sporting a pair of these along with some cresant gear.

Seen tranquil canes all the way down in the 500-750 range recently. That camp is essentially the easiest to get to / hold in Seb and the market is pretty flooded.. I can't imagine an upcoming monk not having one of these cheap because there are sooo many out there. :)

It's usually 1k-1200 for a pair of FBs. Since we have so many monks atm, the price will stay around that for a little while longer.

Well you are right, if you meant each. But Baalzy, said for a pair - which is totally not the case.

Shit, the couple I've sold were hard to get even 400 for. I think I wound up selling one for like 280p or whatever the hell the guy said he had, like 4 hours after I started auctioning it.
