I am playing a human monk, level 8 in the Qeynos area, on Green. So far I have a cracked staff as my primary and a club as my secondary weapon, a few pieces of cloth armor, and a yellow headband.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what I should be working on as far as leveling goes, what gear I should be trying to get now or in the future, and what the main purpose of the monk is in groups?
Thanks!

Pulling and DPS are going to be your primary functions, along with tanking depending on the group make up. Be aware though at the weight of your weapons/armor/inventory takes a toll on your AC. Anything about 10 you will start to lose AC. The more you go above 10, the more your AC loss. May consider ditching the weapons and using your fists, and keeping the items you carry to the bare minimum.

Yikes! Anything over 10? That will change my way of playing no doubt. I knew there was a penalty, but I was thinking around 50% max weight and up.

You're right. 14.9. Good news though! Its scales up as you get higher in level. See below links for more info.

The pre-planar list here https://wiki.project1999.com/Monk gives good suggestions, if you see any of these in auction or can get it yourself that would be good.
To start, get yourself a cured silk armor set first, worry about weapons later. You can make the armor yourself or buy it from a crafter. Go to Guk, the frogs drop magic netted armor, get fist and feet pieces so you can hit mobs that can only be hit with magic weapons.

Learn the way mobs path in the areas you are exping in. Even if FD isn't working yet, pay special attention. Learn to be a good puller WITHOUT FD and you'll be a great puller with it.

2 cracked staves look so badass, its worth taking that extra 2 points of damage

Go to guk and get a set of mesh armour. It's basically a set of leather but with much lower weight and it is magic, which lets you punch creatures otherwise immune to your attacks.
For feet you might want to try getting soft leather from Befallen - like mesh they are low weight and magic. Note mesh, woven and netted armour sets don't have anything for the foot slot. I guess frogloks don't like clothes on their flippers!
The fine silk turban is a great item for a young monk, dropping off a weak sand giant in Oasis. Magic weapon wise the treant staff is handy. You'll need to buy it at this stage. Glowing crook is a nice low level option from Lockjaw in oasis.
A lot of people are recommending combine weapons to characters, which is usually good advice but note as a monk not to invest in a combine great staff as unlike other combine weapons it has a rather poor sell back value.

when you have money sell the cracked staves and buy 2 "staff" from a merchant in qeynos. i think dmg/delay is better and it's also lighter.

There's nothing wrong with bare fisting it. In fact pre kunark your fists are going to be the better choice in most cases.
