Hello,
First time to play EQ. I played it a bit when it first came out. Yes, I'm old. Any suggestions for a good first class? Something that is forgiving on mistakes. I love to group but will likely find myself soloing at times.
I'm a tank a heart but I read they are tough to start but come in to their own later in the game?
Suggestions?

For solo: Necromancer
Desired in groups: Enchanter, Cleric, Bard
Good all around: Shaman
Ive always loved Shadow Knights but they get the hybrid xp penalty, and depending on race get more penalty. Like a Troll SK takes forever to level. While a Halfling Warrior takes like the least xp to level.
Really play what you want. There is currently a need for tanks. And DPS apparently (Bard, Wiz, Ranger, Rogue)

DRUID
100%,. the ability to Heal, root, dd, snare, and port yourself across the world..
Halfling gets +exp%

We absolutely need DPS. Every group I'm in is like 2 paladins, a warrior, a druid and 2 enchanters.

This is weird because ive seen the opposite and the class ratio tell a different story.
Perhaps your area is a tank class starting area?

The only tank that can solo at later levels is the shadow knight. This is because they can fear kite so they can kill without taking actual damage. If you really want to be a tank then I'd go for s SK.
You could also consider a Monk. They are not a tank class but they are sometimes asked to tank when one isn't around. They are also a bad ass melee DPS who can solo decently and make excellent pullers for groups. You would be viable solo, very welcomed to groups and very welcomed to raiding guilds.

One thing to consider if you choose to tank is that you'll likely end up pulling sometimes, which can be tough to do efficiently until you learn the zones, especially in places like Guk.

Gonna level my rogue slowly and by the time I get to like level 10 or so and soloing starts getting rough there should be more tanks.
It's kinda ironic that nearly every post where someone asks for suggestions on a class, everyone scares potential tanks away with the OMFG THE EXPERIENCE PENALTY!!! But then everyone complains there aren't any tanks. Back in 1999 I leveled up a Paladin AND a Shadow Knight and didn't think twice because I stayed off of the forums and didn't even know about the experience penalty.

To be a glorious tank, paladin is your choice and soloable, though its not so perfect.

Halfling Druid.
It's like the game's easy mode. +5% XP bonus, hide, sneak, easy mode solo class, and come 29 you will learn the value of /a

Thanks for all the suggestions!
On a side note, I'm having trouble getting started tbh. I have tried a few classes and races. It's a real struggle so far and I feel completely lost. I spent 30 minutes simply trying to find the druid trainer to turn in that note for my first task.
Even with a printed out map I have issues finding my way around. I found ever other guild house but mine. :) The dwarf starting town was better as a paladin. Just getting out there to kill mobs was 50/50 live or die.
I love a good challenge and prefer to earn my way. It's always so much more rewarding then those games that hold your hand and give you the world. I figure I'm just going about it the wrong way. I'm an mmorpg vet and have played basically everything over the decades but I feel completely lost.
I really want to love this game and more than happy to put in the time and effort. Best part of a good game is the community. So, what am I doing wrong that makes me want to pull my hair out?

i would suggest to pick one city to MEMORIZE. make it your base city/race. pick a race you want to actually be and then pick a class, the class hardly matters you have to know your race/city. then take your time getting to know the city and the noob yard. you dont need to make fast progress in this game just enjoy memorizing. find the level 1s and take it slow if you arent winning a fight run to the guards you will be learning skills in the first fights.

What solleks said is very true. Pick a race/class combo you feel good about and take your time to learn all you can about your city and starting area. The class mechanics will come without you even thinking too much about it. Just have fun and enjoy the journey!
