With the release of green, I've decided to maybe pick up where i left off with my my zone/mob/object re texture project. And since there are less zones on green, i won't be so overwhelmed. Also I'm using newer up scaling tech which uses AI to fill in some data.
So I'm a bit rusty at this and needed to re download programs and extract textures and all that bologna. After a bit of trial and error, i was able to retexture ALL of EC, including npcs, objects and environment. The textures were upscaled x 4 using gigabpixel AI. It also helps if you have EQ Classic HD (https://wiki.project1999.com/EQ_Classic_HD) to make global textures look better.
To install, just extract the three .s3d files into your everquest directory. I suggest backing up your vanilla textures so you can revert the changes.

Using the tutorial I managed to throw together a Danielpack of Rivervale + Misty Thicket upscaled 4x using gigapixel. I think they look pretty neat, but to each their own, obviously.

I'm not sure but really I think it'd just use more RAM? Since the new textures take up a lot more space.

Thanks for picking up the slack guys, I've been crazy busy. Looks like we're on track to actually complete this. Hopefully this weekend I can spend some time picking up where you all left off. And the textures will take up more ram but in reality it's nothing compared to modern games. I'll post my Nvidia settings to show how I got AA working when I get off work.
I'll be doing all HD and then all "Cartoonized" I automate things for a living, so this is in my wheel house. I'll let you guys know when I'm finished. I'm trying to think where it would be best to host all these files. Btw Psycher, I have some questions in regards to VectorMagic when/if you have time.

I mean, how would we know? I've been using all of 'em and logging in/out in the Karanas for days and have had no crashes. But we don't know what causes crashes for the people that are experiencing them.
Can we do anything with the spell effects the same way? Also I'm going through all the files and there are quite a few misc sets I dont' know what to do with? Also what specific files holds the character models and armor?

I also updated my Misty/Rivervale pack with Kithicor, since those are all kinda the same area. If you've already downloaded my Misty/Rivervale pack, just download the Kithicor pack above, but if you want all three, just download the newly repacked Misty/Rivervale/Kithicor pack (https://www.dropbox.com/s/1sz79exbi1tzfw2/p99textures_hd_mistyrivervale.zip?dl=0).

I'm creating HD files, but then I'm turning them into vector files. I'm actually a trying a few different things out. Does anyone know where items are stored, like weapons? I noticed that all of the released ones so far do not include held items.

I have found a preset I like, the error in my ways was trying to create vector art from high quality images instead of making vector art from low quality and then making those high quality.

Thanks for the screenshot of your Nvidia control panel settings.
I compared what I'm seeing in EQ with those setting vs the control panel defaults and I'm not seeing any obvious improvements (GTX1070 + latest driver). Either way I see a lot of texture aliasing. I think there was an older Nvidia driver that allowed us to force mipmapping, which I think would solve this, but the current driver doesn't seem to allow this.
Here's an example of the texture aliasing that I'm seeing - note the shimmering on the ground and pillars. This particular area is especially bad.

I didn't see anything specific for MIP, but there are a lot more Nvidia settings if you use Nvidia Profile Inspector. It gives a lot more granular options, careful what you change though =)
I don't recall seeing what you are seeing in that area, but I also have my AA set to 0x0000002D AA_MODE_METHOD_MIXEDSAMPLE_128X

I found a fix for the texture aliasing. Using EQ-Zip I exported and re-imported the textures in the lakeofillomen_obj.s3d file and that fixes it since EQ-Zip will, by default, add mipmaps to the DDS files when it imports. It looks sooo much better now.
Using EQ-Zip (instead of S3DSpy) should also make Psycher's upscaling process easier since it automatically exports the DDS files to PNG with a PNG extension and automatically imports the PNGs to a DDS format with a BMP extension. It also supports flipping the images to deal with the issue with the chr.s3d files by using some menu buttons.

So the steps for upscaling could be reduced to the following:
Export textures from s3d file using EZ-Zip
Upscale textures in Topaz Gigapixel AI
Import textures back into s3d file using EZ-Zip

Wow, what great work. It would be great to see the Project 1999 team coordinate a wider project to get new textures in place and then to promote them on the homepage. I find it hard to think of any objections to such a coordinated project with respects to saying 'it 'aint classic'.

Just replace the Runnyeye files with the original files you backed up.
I haven't had time to test anything recently so if anyone else is crashing on specific zones, make sure to post it.

1. Yeah that's just for the freeport ones. I combined into one folder like bthomsen0312 suggested. Going to try to make upload more sets of zones when I can so that doesn't happen again sorry about that. The next set will be the Desert of Ro set which should I have done by tonight.
2. Yeah I am using EQ-ZIP makes the process really easy can be done in about an hour a zone once you get used to the process.

While this is super appreciated, these files are scattered all over the place. Should we create a Wiki entry with a link to all of these? Anyone willing to let us use a shared Drive folder so we can add them all to the same place?

1. Yeah that's just for the freeport ones. I combined into one folder like bthomsen0312 suggested. Going to try to make upload more sets of zones when I can so that doesn't happen again sorry about that. The next set will be the Desert of Ro set which should I have done by tonight.
2. Yeah I am using EQ-ZIP makes the process really easy can be done in about an hour a zone once you get used to the process.

The dungeons look fantastic.
Haven't experienced any crashes myself, although I have seen some minor graphical glitches with the treetops in Oasis and South Ro.

I'm not really a graphics guy myself, but after looking thru this thread and testing the downloads, it looks like some have had transparency set correctly and others not. For example, South Ro looked fine except for the trees near the forest / desert border, those looked like square windmills like the photos in this thread. I used EQ_Zip to look at the sro_obj.s3d file and inside it, I found the offending image, named dedpine.png. I saw that the identically-named image in the updated nektulos_obj.s3d had a white (transparent) background in EQ_Zip, so I exported that file and imported it into sro_obj.s3d, then started up EQ and voila - the windmills were gone.
The dedpine.png was the only offending graphic I found in SRo. I'll see what else I can find in other zone files upon casual inspection.

Okay, I've spent the past 3 nights learning to use both S3Dspy and EQzip. I've had tons of issues but I've seem to work them out.
My main goal was to fix Greater Faydark up-scales that were presented here. There were tons of reworks that we'rent pulled from the Highres_s3d files. And, the issues with Kelethin Bridges really bothered me.
So I used the work that is done here and followed suit and fixed GFay. All I learned was that EQzip doesn't seem to like to put DDS correctly back into s3d without in game opaque issues. I do plan on trying to repair and update things that were following this posts directions.

There is another project (https://wiki.project1999.com/EQ_Classic_Enhanced) that is upscaling original textures rather than the highres pack, but I prefer the look of these. That one does have a rather detailed description (all but the transparencies), and has some ideas on process improvement (see wishlist section) that might assist in your process.

I plan on fixing all the issues here for OG content first, Sir J here upscale using Waifu or something IDK. But not Gigapixel and there are tons of problems. I'll be done with Faydwere today if all goes well.
Antonica, Erud, then Kunark are on my hit list by End of month. We'll see about Velious as this project takes dedication but I plan on doing all of them from Highres to Gigpixel 4x.
Checked out that project, it's basically the same process but he uses a few different ways to exchange png to dds, i use xconvert and haven't lost a transparency yet. Also i used that download earlier and most of that upscale is messed with by something other then just Gigapixel it looks almost cartoony. I'm attempting to keep things original.
As you can see Gfays bridge. I up scaled it x4 then x6, then used Gimp to fix the edge issues while maintaining transparency. Then i rescaled it down back to 1024x1024 changed back to DDS then uploaded. I did redo the whole Gfay file that was loaded here earlier as it was garbage by the highres standard (IMHO).

Yeah, the look is why I wanted to go with this, I like the sharper feel. Even with all my driver tweaks the other one just didn't get the detail levels that this does. Glad to see you found a good way to not have issues with the transparencies, just keep an eye for the odd ones that require the multi levels of alpha.
A month sounds very ambitious, I definitely look forward to more of yours, though I mostly play even characters so it might be a before I get to see many of them. EC would be a good place to showcase though, in addition to the zones that others listed as problematic with the other method.

Working on Mistmoore and steamfont, Crushbone then unrest today. Might get to Antonica zones tomorrow. I've yet to see anything in Gimp that has more then one transparency. But I'll keep an eye out. I've been testing all my zones before i post, I don't go every where but if there are issues I'll fix them if someone posts it here.

Checked your link and saw you got to freeport, looks more detailed than Psycher's freeport done a while back. Looking forward to a fully upscaled Norrath down the road =)

There is another project (https://wiki.project1999.com/EQ_Classic_Enhanced) that is upscaling original textures rather than the highres pack, but I prefer the look of these
I tried both: I 100% like this project better. The old textures upscaled in the other project just look like cell-shaded camouflage patterns. A bit boring, and not matching the style of everything else.

I'm doing it all like that. I did use some older files in lowres then upscale where it looked more natural.
This project is fun and I'm glad you like the work. I spent 3 days on Gfay and 3 on Freeport just to get them as perfect as I could.
Working on neriak now and it's a pita because there is a file threshold in each zone. And some files in both low and highres don't look right.

I've been working on something similar, That being said... I'm doing a bit of photoshopping afterward processing, polishing up the look further

I plan on fixing all the issues here for OG content first, Sir J here upscale using Waifu or something IDK. But not Gigapixel and there are tons of problems. I'll be done with Faydwere today if all goes well.
Antonica, Erud, then Kunark are on my hit list by End of month. We'll see about Velious as this project takes dedication but I plan on doing all of them from Highres to Gigpixel 4x.
Checked out that project, it's basically the same process but he uses a few different ways to exchange png to dds, i use xconvert and haven't lost a transparency yet. Also i used that download earlier and most of that upscale is messed with by something other then just Gigapixel it looks almost cartoony. I'm attempting to keep things original.
As you can see Gfays bridge. I up scaled it x4 then x6, then used Gimp to fix the edge issues while maintaining transparency. Then i rescaled it down back to 1024x1024 changed back to DDS then uploaded. I did redo the whole Gfay file that was loaded here earlier as it was garbage by the highres standard (IMHO).

They are all tested in most areas that are in Dropbox yes. Just its more of a pain open the download everquest folder then open the zone folder copy then paste into main P99 directory overwrite. If issues with area or npc monster I'll look into it. Once I'm done with classic zones I'll have it all in one zip.
I fixed the pink triangle use from the last lava storm last night.
I fixed butcher block shimmer at dock.
ALOT of the transparency Issues in the files to include the ones in highres and some in lowres.
This is only zone, objects and some characters per area in that zone. I use
Eqhd as well and this doesn't mess with those files.

Oh man!
I did a neat thing with the water and experimented with a "mip trick"
by changing the water color, shifting the texture and timing for each mip map stage, you can eliminate the repeating texture and greatly improve water without breaking from the vanilla art style

I've been doing water upgrades in all my zones but that is well be a separate download. I've finished almost all of classic zones but haven't uploaded them yet. I've also changed river water to give more of a flowing effect. The blues in water in keeping if it's blue, but less of a dark blue and more of a natural blue. Green stays green and so on.

I have also added a blue water exchange in all Classic zones, those are to be extracted to the main Project 1999 folder after the Highres_s3d 4k Files.

I'm working on Solsek zones then i'll move to Ro Desert and keep moving west until Erud. I've attempted to keep most of the files intact from Highres_s3d but some files have had major issues. Either with upgrades or the files were problematic from the start. So I've used a few lowres_s3d files upscaled and touched up in gimp. If the Highres files took away an atmosphere the lowres files were used. i.e. Neriak was way less purple and many files were broken. I spent 3 days on Neriak a,b and c just to repair the atmosphere and files that were called incorrectly.
The Water files were exchanged because the blue and nauseating cycle hurts my eyes physically and mentally so OOT would of been a no go for me as I don't want to puke IRL. This is mostly not a joke.

Is there a complete compilation of this somewhere? There are so many files in these 18 pages and a lot of the links are dead. It looks really nice and I'd like to try it.

I don't think most of the upgraded texture packs were finished, however Highres 4X HD on this wiki page is complete and looks great. It also has EQ Classic HD basically built in.
