View Full Version : Live server population

Does anyone know of a resource that showed live server populations before they stopped showing a numerical value?

Its hard for me to remember. I remember over 1000 all the time, and 3000's on the big servers but I can't recall when these numbers were from.

This data has never been available, except maybe in beta. Any "resource" claiming otherwise is bullshit.

You sure put me in my place! A web archive of a screenshot from a 3rd party tool from 1999 certainly exudes reliability and accuracy.

Server population was on the server select screen until the Sept 11, 2001 patch. It's in the patch notes, go look.

** Miscellaneous Updates **

- The server selection screen now only gives information on whether or
not a server is up instead of providing player counts. In addition, the
"count" option on the /who command has been restricted to internal
personnel. Servers on the server selection screen are still ordered
from least-populated to most populated in order to assist players in
choosing the least populated server.

I recall writing an app to grab EQ server status in VB6 when I was in high school. I remember it fairly well as it was the first time I had delved into the difference between TCP and UDP traffic. All of the EQ server status data was provided via UDP streams with a specific data structure. They provided population count as part of this data.

I was looking for historical data like Dola posted http://web.archive.org/web/20000815212759/http://eqvault.ign.com/scan/ but I wonder the date on that picture.

http://web.archive.org/web/20000817100435/http://www.duke.nu/eqserverscan.html is the source.

I remember when the numbers stopped showing on the server select list I knew the lameness was setting in.

Here is a screen from the above source.

http://web.archive.org/web/20001201203000/http://www.duke.nu/eqserverscan_screenshot.html again no idea when this was. Pre Sullon Zek at least.

Pheerie please go level up forum quest for a few months and then come back. Dolalin thank you for the lead that led me to all of the above links that give a good taste of the populations of old. I think we are capable of having at least 1 server at classic level pops, which is extremely exciting for a 20 year old MMO.

I have a snap of the moment they celebrated 100,000 players or something, was around 2002.

Anyone who played at that time remembers it being on the screen. Imagine not actually playing classic eq and trying to be an authority on the subject.

Please provide a screenshot of classic EQ showing numbers on the screen, and not a 3rd party app skimming numbers. This app did have a dev reply stating it was accurate, but at no time after launch has verant/soe/dbg provided verified live population numbers. Sorry, but your recollection seeing population numbers in the actual EQ login screen is wrong.

Staff are even considering opening a 2nd server if the population on green demands it.
I think we're going to see some beyond single server classic numbers on 1 p99 server.

Tell more people about Green!

Someone already showed you patch notes from when Verant removed the raw numbers. Is that not good enough for you?

More proof that there are people on this forum who never actually played EQ back then, but lie and claim they did presumably because they think it gives them "street cred" on this board. As everyone who was actually there is well aware, server populations were visible right there at the server select screen for years. There are pictures of that login screen floating around the internet, including some that have been posted on this very forum.

I will back this up. Brell Serilis ranged between 900 to 1200 players during pre Kunark, and Fennin Ro was one of the big winners with a pop ranging about 30-40% higher. Poor little Lanys T'val opened with like 750 at launch and then started dipping downwards. I don't recall when the numbers stopped being shown, but they were there initially for quite a while on the server select screen.

That screenshot is straight from the manual. This means it was made by an employee so it is likely to have been taken some time between 8am-5pm on a weekday. By all measures those would have been good numbers for that time and day.

Imagine being this aggressively wrong.

Server select screen def showed each server population for quite a while. Unfortunately back then when I was a wee teenager I didn't save print-screen screenshots of it to prove to people later.

lol just realized he’s the same guy that started the thread about the likelihood of p99 getting shut down by Daybreak and losing his progress. Real winner we’ve got on our hands.

Being able to chat on EQ from IRC and writing bots was sweet. Super handy for looking up spells, items, etc. Those sorts of shinies aren't my cup of tea in EQ these days, but back in the PoP era it was cool as shit.

Unfortunately :( it is the only one I took, I thought I took more but guess not, Not all the message is there but you can see the server wide thanks from the company. The Image properties say modified Sunday, ‎July ‎28, ‎2002, not sure if that's the exact date but it probably is.
