Just for context, I played both Everquest at launch in 1999 and World of Warcraft when it launched in 2004.
I started playing Classic WoW when it launched with a guy that I work with. He never played MMORPGs before. We played for a while and, as most of you know, I became bored of Classic WoW before I even played it for a month. I took a week off from work to play it at launch and played it as much as I possibly could before I grew bored with it.
So yesterday I am talking to that guy in work and I am telling him how I died in the Qeynos catacombs but was bound in Freeport and how I gotta get my corpse. He stared at me with a confused look as I told him this story. He asked me why I would prefer a game like that (Project 1999) over classic WoW.
I paused because, first off, I knew no matter what I answered, he wouldn't get it. If I was going to make a point, I wanted it to hit home. So I just shrugged and didn't answer.
I logged on after work and zoned into East Commons. I sent one /ooc that asked if anyone could port me as close as possible to Qeynos for a CR. I immediately received five tells from players telling me that they will take me. It was overwhelming.
I looked at my chat window, sat back in my chair, and said to myself, THAT is why I prefer this game over classic WoW!
It doesn't matter if my friend understands why I play this game, as it's not for everyone! Yes, it is kind of sadistic, but whatever!
The community is what made EverQuest the best game above all others, and the community is what makes Project 1999 the best game above all others presently. I just wanted to share this little story.

I only got to level 25 in class wow but it was similar to me. Very little life to the whole experience. I’d group with people but most the time they’d leave after quests mostly without even saying anything.

Exactly i think i spoke more with a group i was in for 1 hour last night than i ever did in all ranmdom groups combined in WoW. Just no need for socialising. Do your thing and move on. Very dry :|

Socializing is the real end game. People keep coming back for the social aspect. Yeah sure we have goals for our characters but it's the other people in the world that makes it feel important. Project 1999 does it right with 1 person per character. Each character in game is a real person irl.

I had a conversation with a friend a few weeks ago:
We were playing WoW classic on a freeshard.
Back in the days when WoW was released i only played a few days caus i found it boring.
Like i was pulled through the game by a threat from quest to quest...
So we started on a freeshard i found, i wanted to give it a try to play with him together.
He played years WoW on live and was always so excited about the game (we played lots of UO together and still do on a freeshard)
When we played he was also curious about EQ and what i liked so much on it.
I told him i liked the challenge not to do die to avoid corpse runs for example and the loss of EXP.
I played a tank and he told me how to combo (felt like) dozens of buttons to take aggro correct. I read in forums.
When i told him, there is almost only 1 button as a tank to taunt in EQ he asked how tanks keep their aggro, that game could'nt not work i told him it does work.
He could not believe me.
I told him people act more careful not to get aggro, caus getting aggro kills you so fast (i always played wizzi, i know that one)
I wanted to say: i understand how hard it is to tell people how EQ works.
And it is so hard to show them caus they see the grafix and can't stand it.
(Not that everybody needs the newest grafic, but EQ can be somewhat hard.)
It is an experience you must make.
Like the community feeling.
People working and actually TALKING to each other.
Those very tight dungeons, so hard to move in.
You make one step and aggro half the zone and have a whipe.

I had a break of 1 year now from P99.
When i read about green and the thought of lowbes swarming nek-forest around newbe-log... i was so excited to start over again :)

Yup! I would be in these "rotating groups" where players would join, get their quest drops and leave, then a new person would be invited, so on and so forth.
I would say hi in group chat or try to make light of the game and no one, ever, responded! This occured group after group after group in classic WoW. I am not saying it sucks, I am saying, as an old-head, it's not for me! I would much rather get nothing done and just sit around and chat.

Honestly, I've played red a couple of times recently, and even though the group I form has 2/3rds of the server in it, there are more friendly people on red than I ever met in wow classic. Sad.

People refer to Everquest as Neverquest since there are remarkably fewer quests than other MMPORGS. In reality the quests in WoW are not a challenge. Its always the same
Kill X of Y <insert enemy>
Get 3 Lion Blood
Escort X NPC to <place> (shudder)
They are mostly time sinks to create the false illusion of not camping a certain area.
The lore of WoW is amazing, the world looks more "alive" i guess. BUt it cant replace the great social part of EQ.

Right? I just spent a month in cwow and it was the most anti-social mmo experience I've ever had. No talking, no resting, just go go go. And there were tons of people everywhere, but as soon as you're done doing the thing, they drop out not even 'thx for grp' or anything. And if you do get into any conversation, it's all about the minmax. I'm a social person in these games, I like to get to know people, the various colorful personalities, and after a month in game my friends list was zero. I was like fuck this, I'm playing a single-player game here, these people aren't people, they might as well be NPCs.

Couldn't agree more with everything you said. You pretty much nailed it! I always thought the "go go go" part of the game was a quality of life change that made MMORPGs better, but now I see that the downtime is part of the reason players talk to each other because.......well, because there's nothing else to really do. Gems is only fun for so long.
The scary part is, that this (cwow) is the future of MMORPGs and the blueprint that most gaming companies use to make one so our beloved genre may be gone for good.

Yeah EQ quests are bullshit. You have to go up to all the npcs in the entire world and go hail and see what they say. Imagine having to do that? Going from one to another to another just hail hail hail what sarnak tabard what bottle of wine what beetle pincer what what what.
You're TYPING OUT ALL THE WORDS wtf! Spell 'augury' wrong now you're fucking typing that shit all over again! Arghh! And that guy I have to carry the letter to, where is the guy on the map! I mean where is the map, but if I had a map the guy wouldn't be on there anyway, it's like some kind of double-screwing.
I am so sick and tired of this low quality questing, I tell you.
What I need is a Quest window that opens when I log in with all the available quests that I can sort by reward. Then I can click the "Complete" button next to the quest, my reward is then autoequipped and the previous item is automatically sent to the bazaar for auction. This way I can complete two, three-dozen quests as a nice warm up exercise before heading out to the raid or whatever.

Sure i know there are quests.
But you probably get more quests in 1 continent of WoW than in all of EQ is what i mean. And i still prefer EQ

Ah Anarchy Online. I beta tested that one. It had such potential! But yet, it was a Funcom game, meaning it lead the way for future Funcom games that were ultimately super disappointing. Anarchy Online, Conan and Secret World had such great promise on paper.
