View Full Version : Is an untwinked WAR worth semi-solo leveling purely for fun?

I feel a strong itch to make a Warrior but part of me believes that if I'm gonna make a tanking alt purely for fun it should be a Shadow Knight instead.
I hear that Warriors are so boring/featureless compared to other classes that unless they're in a group or twinked up the ass they're basically the class equivalent of a helpless quadriplegic desperately rolling their way around until they find a healer to cling onto and I know I'm a bit too antisocial to constantly live in groups.
That added to the fact that I'm used to playing classes that have levitation/invis/bind etc. to quickly cross Norrath means the transition to a class that would have to beg for SoWs and binds every two hours or cry in EC for help crossing Dagnor sounds pretty bleak.
A little tumor in the back of my head still whispers that dual wielding big ass weapons would be worth it though and I try to justify to myself that people play warrior because it outmatches other tanks when it comes to numbers rather than having flashy spells. I know nothing beats a raid warrior's outright broken tanking disciplines but I want to make it clear that I'm never getting this guy to 60 or probably even 40.
So what do you guys think? Is a warrior's group performance worth the mind numbing chore of having to level one untwinked or should I just roll an SK like every other non-raid tank?

I wouldn’t play a warrior on Blue, it’d be painful trying to tank for nothing but twinks.
Green is a month away though.

No melee class solos well untwinked (i.e. Fungi Tunic)

i played a warrior to 54 in classic and then an extremely, just staggeringly twinked warrior to 60 on p99
warriors are not very fun without a fungi and an 8th+ Coldain ring
I eerily relate to most everything you're saying here...
I decided to play a Monk main on green launch, but lately can't drop the idea of playing a Warrior main!
There is just something appealing to me about the role, and the ultimate adventure of leveling him up from rags at lvl 1 to (hopefully) lvl 60 with planar armor. All from Gods and Dragons that I didn't just fight against, I stood toe to toe and took all the blows for the army of friends behind me. Most likely the very same ones that helped me slowly chug my way from a lvl 1 nothing all the way into this monstrous beast of a tank!
Also as a Warrior the only thing I need to focus on is gear...
Tank well, make friends and GEAR!
No having to worry about spells, or how to afford them all, what they do, how best to use them...
Just learning to tank. Getting more powerful by getting more ...GEAR!
Despite all this my biggest fear is....do they only sound like fun?
It'd suck to be 40 lvls into the thing before you finally realize that auto attack and kick/slam isn't going to do it for you anymore.
Do you worry about that at all? Or just the lack or sks snap aggro?

You could just play a most interesting class that can duel weild?? Bard, Rogue, Ranger?

IF twinking was an options
Fungi + 2x Blood Point + haste item + Str/Dex gear
untwinked warrior = -(fun)

I soloed an untwinked warrior on red to the 40s... I cheated cos someone gave me a Nathsar greatsword at 30. It certainly speeded up kills compared to the combine two handed sword!
Did most of the work in Najena. Unfortunately the ring/bronze there is large so wore almost full raw-hide. Was really ghetto.

Truer words have never been spoken, except for your 2nd sentence.
There really is no point to playing a warrior except for being able to wear plate and not have a EXP penalty.
SK, Pal, and Monk are going to tank better than warrior Pre Raiding. Come to think of it, Mage and necro pets are going to tank better than Warrior.
I look at it this way, a level 39 mage pet has ~1300 HPs, regens at 30HP / Tick, and hits for ~36 damage. Those stats alone are basically better than any warrior of similar level, Pre Kunark. When you add to that, the fact that the mage can cast another pet for only 200 mana, it becomes very apparent why warriors are without doubt the most pathetic class to ever grace classic EQ.
And before anyone chimes in about disciplines and high DPS blah blah - Most warriors never even get there, not even close. It takes a highly disciplined mega incel mouthbreather to obtain warrior stardom, and even then they still die to soloing a blue mob.
TLDR? warrior has 0 utility, choose another class

A warrior has access to more item clicks than any other class. My warrior can levitate, sow, dot, slow, tash, see invis, invis, port, stun, rune, lifetap, snare, pbae 260, ultravision, extinguish fatigue, ds, heal, root and more the list goes on. At the high end a warrior can in fact do just about anything.

I guess you missed the part where OP said he would probably never level his character past 40, and you conveniently removed the part of the post you quoted that clarified they were talking "Pre Raiding"

after 45-50 you really wanna have 200+ dex and a scimitar of lifestealing on top of the fungi/9th ring to keep it bearable
just a normal class designed for normal people

You do not like erotic adventures? Neither did my guild. I wrote some once with this real masculine Iksar making his way across the continents introducing the ladies to his curious hemi-penis. It was like the original shocker. I think I was ostracized for a little while but then they said come to Howling Stones and I knew it was ok.

No melee class solos well untwinked (i.e. Fungi Tunic)Bind Wound and Mend make for a pretty nebulous concept of "well"
But
Monks.
Wouldn't that be hemipenes? And I bet "it's like having sex with a cactus" really got their panties wet.

I don't want links, but I wouldn't mind a run down of what piece of Warrior only gear does each thing.
Weapon procs I think I know, and maybe half the clicks, but Warriors get a port clicky? A Warrior only levitate?
Not attempting to call you out, and I imagine most if not all of that involves gear that other classes can also use, I'm just genuinely curious.

Many are procs, many are clicks. Warriors have access to almost every weapon. Monks can't sow sword, rogues can't 2h. I wasn't saying this stuff is all warrior only (lev). I'm saying when you look at all the procs and clicks as a whole warriors can use more than anyone else.

Depends on your mindset/attitude, I had a ton of fun with my war in ALS and spent much of my sub-40 time solo. If you enjoy a challenge and/or are a masochist, then go for it.

melees in general suck compared to casters. That was the biggest unbalancing of them all; the original designers actually thought that casters would be frail and easily killed, just like in DnD, and then gave them incredibly OP abilities, things they really had no idea how people would use. They seemed to think that well, they would always need a big strong melee for protection, so fine, but in reality casters just blow crap up left and right in exp play. Yeah, you need a tank on raids but that's about it. If you dropped out all the melee classes, everquest would grind along just fine. If you dropped out all the casters...end of story.

To be fair we're talking about an untwinked war, soooooo.....
That list is what a war would have after 8 years on blue.

The A-Team proved you don't even need warriors on raids, either, as evidenced by our Spiroc Lord kill with an enchanter tanking!
Leveling an untwinked warrior solo is not that bad. A decent 2h weapon like a staff of battle (or a couple of jade maces for lower levels) and lots of bandages will get you very far. You can live inside highkeep from 20-50 and level pretty efficiently camping one of the 4/6m respawn mobs while also being able to bank, bind, and vendor.
