Richard Stallman resigns from MIT over Epstein comments

The conversation that triggered Stallman's fall started when someone—names other than Stallman's are redacted in the leaked emails—posted about a planned protest at MIT. The email stated that famed MIT computer scientist Marvin Minsky "is accused of assaulting one of Epstein's victims."

Stallman objected, saying that the blurb "does an injustice" to Minsky because even if it's true that the then-17-year-old had sex with Minsky, "the most plausible scenario is that she presented herself to him as entirely willing." Someone pointed out that the age of consent in the US Virgin Islands, where the incident allegedly occurred, is 18. But Stallman wasn't persuaded.

In the last week, after his comments received widespread attention, Stallman said he was rethinking some of these views. "Many years ago I posted that I could not see anything wrong about sex between an adult and a child, if the child accepted it," he wrote on Saturday. "Through personal conversations in recent years, I've learned to understand how sex with a child can harm her psychologically. There is a changing definition of what is a child in the US. People generally under 24 are considered children, and I can recount a few people facing critique over dating people in their early twenties (<25) from dating men (mostly men) who are older. I've read an article that questions whether 16 year olds can be sexually active at all, that is, with teens their own age (other 16 yr olds), not with older people so nothing like pedophilia or an age difference at all. Gone from a lot of his thinking is intent and emotion behind word choices, which is part of the reason as to why he comes off as a creep to a lot of women. (Lack of emotional empathy + high sex drive = creepiness + a couple of balancing constants.)

Well, I'll say this: that's definitely not a typical (and also, I'd argue, not rational) fear.

In the real world autistics and other atypical people don't get hired without the company knowing they're a little off. If they use the wrong word and offend people (something neurotypical people do too), people don't just jump to "they're evil!", they usually think "oh that's Bob, he's just weird like that". If they truly do get offended, they (or your boss in a worst case scenario) will explain the issue to you, you'll have a chance to apologize and explain you didn't mean tot offend, and life goes on.

So in feeling like you're one wrong word away from life ruination, presumably because of the imaginary "PC Police" in your fantasies ... you definitely count as atypical :)
