hello there
Like all of us here I used to play EQ back in the days, and I still feel the urge to play it from time to time. I had a great time a few years back on the officials TLP (/wave to anyone that played with Darkwind on RageFire) but this is not quite the original experience.
So I'm back on P99, and i'm trying to find my pace.
I rolled a rogue like I used to play in 00', but I wanted to show my GF what it's all about. She's not a gamer (but trying a little bit of everything) and I figured that original EQ was the perfect balance of easy mechanics for her and challenge to keep us interested in the long run. She chose to roll a DE Necro, so i'm wondering what to play with her.
I can think of a lot of different combination, and I kinda like the idea of a Druid. I could roll a human druid in FP to play with her, and if i'm not mistaken nec and dru are two of the strongest soloer in the game which could help us playing by ourselves. Druid will also bring ports, will be wanted in the endgame if I ever get to that point (that raid buff in velious is still a thing right?) and will also be a superb PLer if we want to try other stuff.
Any other suggestion for a duo with a necromancer?

Hey there, welcome (back)!
That's awesome that you and your girlfriend can play together. I was in a similar boat as your girlfriend actually! My boyfriend used to play on Live and then now on P99, and he got me into the game. I had never played an MMO before starting P99 last year!
I might be a little biased since my main is a Druid, but I think Druid could be a great choice! Paired with a Necro, you guys would probably want to do Fear Kiting :)

Druid is probably the most beginner friendly option for her necro to duo with.
If you wanted to pick something with a little more octane for later levels if/when you both get more comfortable with charm mechanics, go enchanter.

Druid is a very versatile class and would be a fine choice but the ports are overrated especially now with dial a port. By the time you guys are appropriate level for porting, you could just buy a port from that porting guild.
Cleric allows the Necro to be the star of the show. Providing HP buffs and heals basically allowing her to permanently have her Lich line of spells up 24/7. Also you would be able to duo undead quite easily. Plus rezzing her if she makes any mistakes and you don’t also wipe. Plus if you guys wanted to join a group it’s easier to get in a group/start a group as a cleric.
Don’t rule out Necro/necro. There’s a bunch of cool stuff you guys could do with shadow compact/cancel magic combo on each other and on your pets. Learning her class and teaching her some tips along the way wouldn’t hurt either.

Shaman or druid complement a necro well with regen/heals...plus both can also cast dots if you want to "root rot" your victims :)
Curveball.... necro and necro? Why not go extra evil? ;)
Curveball 2.... necro and cleric? Undead hunt together... clerics are undead wizards as well as being great healers.

Necro/shaman is pretty strong. been playing that combo with my brother recently into the lower 50s. undead charm and shaman slow allow for some solid killing.

A damn now i'm not sure.
I was a Cleric on the TLPs and, as one of my dear friend there said, it takes very special people to main a cleric in everquest, and I appear to be that kind of guy. Only thing I disliked on the TLPs is that while nostalgia made you believe you were a benevolent soul roaming the world to help people in need of rezzes, the fact was that there was an Epic cleric camped in just about every corner of the world completely negating any sort of community bonding you could create. With P99 blue having been around that long, I suppose it's sort of the case already?

This too.
@OP - if you can convince your GF to roll an Iksar Necro instead (explain how the HP regen will be very strong as she levels up)...you can then make an Iksar Shaman and level together right from the get-go without having to travel.
Not only that, but I think the hunting areas / progression for Iksars in Kunark is pretty damn sweet. Shaman SoW is what? Level 9? Lots of options as you can both still bind / gate and then travel at SoW speed together.
Now that I've typed this out...yeah...prob your best bet. If you guys get through FoB and grind out Kurn's Tower til green-out....you'll probably have her hooked.

Hey all, and thank you for your support.
We went for NEC/CLR and we're up to lvl 4 after a rough start. My intuition that the community based, mechanically easy but unforgiving nature of EverQuest would be a good match for our duo seems to be holding.
I'm not sure she'll play a lot by herself at the begining, so I'm left wondering what to do when she's not here. I first thought i would do TS but alas I have no income, and an alt would soon become a main which i want to avoid... Any suggestion on organizing our playtime?

You're way better off staying "static" with her so you don't out level her character.
Only play the cleric when she's playing.
Your only option is just to roll another character, honestly. Nothing wrong with that at all. Who cares if it becomes your main and your cleric is your "only w/ GF" alt?

I might recommend doing so lower level quests while you're playing without her. Definitely will give you the "classic" experience and probably won't pass her by with levels. Quests can be a fun time sink.

This.
Also you can spend time researching where you guys will hunt and maybe give her a few different options of where you guys can adventure for the night. I recently started playing EQ with my wife and I was really trying to enhance her experience during our limited playtime so I found some cool quests for us to do while grinding. We’re currently doing the scarab armor quests in kaladim so she can not only experience grinding but also questing for her own armor. I never would have known about that quest had I not been researching for her.
Good luck

Traveling takes so long, that if you only have a short play session and you log in half an hour away from where you left her, that's not ideal
Just make an alt.

Okay i'm just bumping my own thread, hope you won't mind.
We are currently having a hard time levelling at lvl 6. We are in EC atm, not a whole lot of mobs but a lot of deaths for sure.
I can't really remember what zone to hunt in at that level, especially since we are bound in Nektulos forest. We tried befallen briefly and while she enjoyed the dungeon experience there are just too many traps in that place, both literally and figurativelly.
Am I missing something obvious?

You can fight undead around the Wizard ruins in Nektulos, I think? Also halflings on the opposite side of the zone.

Deathfist Orcs in a group plus looting the deathfist belts and turning them in for big XP is just about as classic as EC can get
