Hey all! I'm completely new to Everquest entirely. Yikes. I feel like the learning curve will be huge but I have always wanted to get into this game and I'm going to dedicate myself to it. I would love any kind of contact, friends, advice, anything! I'm just an MMO drifter determined to be a friendly uplifting part of communities and I'd like to see this as my home. Quick question, is tanking a thing in this game? I'm assuming it may be or maybe there are just bulky peeps in armor which are also fine. Any class recommendations? Also, how much does racial choice matter? Any advice for a race choice for a defensive/tank character? Thanks all. :)

Hey bud I'm new as well and definitely a player in the same vein as you! Let's meet up sometime. You on Blue?

Hi there, welcome! Yes, tanking is a thing... there are aggro/hate list mechanics that allow players to influence (on purpose or on accident) the player to whom the target is dealing direct damage.

Loramin will be here shortly to give you a link to the wiki where you can read up on the classes and races. Warriors, Paladins, and Shadowknights are all good choices and all have their pros and cons.

ROFL am I that predictable? :)

But yes as the great Shoveler said, the wiki (http://wiki.project1999.com) should be the go to place for all P99 players, and especially new players. It has far more information than even the best EverQuest sites did back in EverQuest's heyday (1999-2001).

I would love any kind of contact, friends, advice, anything!
If you see me online feel free to /tell Loramin and ask any questions you want, but asking here in the forum (as you're doing) will be faster if I'm AFK or not online.

There are three main tank classes: the quintessential tank class, Warrior, and the two hybrid tanks, Paladin (Warrior/Cleric) and Shadow Knight (Warrior/Necromancer). Other classes (Bards, Rangers, Monks, and even Clerics, Rogues, or Shaman) can all tank to varying degrees, but the three classes I mentioned are the main tank classes.

I should note that if you want to tank the very hardest raid encounters in the game (ie. the most badass dragons and giants), you should pick Warrior, but for most other things all three classes are viable tanks.

Also, how much does racial choice matter? Any advice for a race choice for a defensive/tank character? Thanks all. :)

You know that wiki thing I just mentioned? ;)

http://wiki.project1999.com/Warrior
http://wiki.project1999.com/Paladin
http://wiki.project1999.com/Shadow Knight

Those pages will give you a brief introduction to the class, so you can decide which one appeals to you most, and then all three have a section on race selection that breaks down your options.

Welcome to the server!

Hey, there.
I am absolutely new, too.
My friend and I have a plan to have me start as... probably a shadow knight.
My device is having connectivity issues, but once that is over, I'd gladly join the other person who is absolutely new, here!

A tank like warrior is nice because you’re always welcome in most groups. I’ve noticed a lack of tanks at lower levels but plenty of casters and DPS so I made a wood elf warrior. Sure it’s not the best race for warriors but fun. If you don’t have a healer to duo with then soloing can suck so grouping is your only option. No spells, pretty much taunt and hit and hope the healer keeps you healed up.
