I know very little about paw before and after it became infected and why (lowkey requesting Everquests Mysteries to make a lore video on this zone please )
From what my drug induced late night farming and internet browsing was able to put together is that not much info is availble about paw before the nerf?
I had no clue what was there before, a lower level dungeon? teens? Did i ever set foot in there before the nerf? I have no idea I cant remember anything anymore thanks to the drugs and everquest.
Here's a few links if you're interested to look at what I found. Also if you know anything and can supply any info for the curious please do because I am curious.

Splitpaw was changed twice during Classic, the first time was really early in the game (like 5-6 months after it was released) and then again right before Kunark came out. The first change was the more significant one, with a big increase in the level range of the dungeon, and then the second change increased it a bit further in the deeper areas of the dungeon I think.
I can't remember much about the exact content during each iteration, but from what I recall, the earliest form of Splitpaw was designed for people to start going there in the early/mid teens. The dungeon was first changed because it was thought of as too out-of-the-way for that level range, with the adjacent (and eventually extremely overcrowed) South Karana being a hunting destination for higher level people who found Splitpaw to be generally useless by then. The change to Splitpaw gave people more things to hunt in this overcrowed hotspot area, although groups rarely went far in because of the difficulty and lack of enough highly desired loot.
The second change to the dungeon was probably to add more content into the game for high level people who were extremely overcrowed in Lower Guk and Sol B at that point. Unfortunately the place never really took off because it was generally considered to not be worth it. People preferred to just wait their turn in the more popular spots. It was usually still just the front area of the dungeon that was regularly camped.
I'd definitely like to see more concrete info if someone can find it! The earliest form of the zone in particular seems like something that nobody really remembers exactly anymore.

More info on this would also be great!

It had a forces of Fear invasion, much like Kithicor is infested with Hate.
Unlike Fay Kithicor never reset to a safer state. It would be a lovely safe teen zone if it wasn't for the ass hole Dev that then went and inserted the Brownie Scouts for a temple sol ro era quest update

My memory of Fay was there was one unicorn that was there before the invasion or whatever it was?
I have not been able to confirm this and assume I just was wrong. But I thought that about the wee harvester until I found it a couple years ago.
Any clues about what I might be thinking about?

Isn't that the state it's in right now? The unicorn is Equestrielle. S/he was corrupted in the Cazic Thule invasion that happened during PoP (I think? Maybe SoL/GoD?). That was the first change to Lfay that I know of, but I started EQ right after Kunark launched, so maybe there is some other change that I'm unaware of. As for Splitpaw it was answered pretty well in that necro, and it's surprising no one answered for 2 months. It used to be low level and they changed it because it was miles away from any town is my guess.
I don't recall brownie scouts being added because of the invasion specifically, but they definitely ruin most of the zone regardless. Then again the zone is pretty obviously not viable to begin with, like many other EQ zones that are clearly flawed for leveling. I remember leveling my first P99 char there just for the hell of it and it was pretty tough.

What sucks is that the old infected paw was removed before the spoiler sites and mob databases like Illia's Bestiary really got off the ground, so there's not a lot of info.
This post references a named that I haven't heard before anywhere and isn't even on the map. It's hard to be sure what's real and what's not.

Killing the High Shaman Kurrpock will also force the spawn on the Darkelf. The Darkelf spawns right outside of the room with Kurrpock by the underwater tunnel. BE WARNED HE IS LVL 23 TO 26! and killed me when I was lvl 27. He drops some kind of braclet worth 70pp to the merchants and a Gossimor Robe both are rare drops.

My friends . . . many of you are asking for great places to hunt, and so I
woulod like to make a single recommendatin that I KNOW will work. Starting
at Level 12, go to Paw. You won't regret it.
I got enough loot AND experience there (at the same time) to stay there
from Level 13 to until I got Level 19. And on Fenin Ro there is NEVER
anyone there (2 people at 8:00 in the evening one night, amazing).
Before I describe the place let me just say that I finished my banded set
at Level 14, and finished my bronze platemail set at Level 18. I bought my
first combine longsword at Level 15, and my second at Level 17. I still
have 200 plat left over.
And this was all solo . . .
Buy about 4 backpacks, you'll need them.
Paw is the home of the Splitpaw Gnolls. You can find it by heading
directly south when you cross into S Karana from the Bridge from N Karana.
You will in time see hills and some rock spires that look like a Paw. There
is a cave which leads to the zone entrance.
At the entrance you will find Gnolls. Probably Level 8-10 or so. Most will
ignore you.
Eventually you will meet guards . . . which you can easily solo, and for
good exp. They are level 10-12 maybe. They may have cloth armor. Keep it.
They may have rusty weapons. Get used to destroying them, not worth their
weight.
You will also find Shamans. These are pretty weak, also about level 10-12.
They carry much better loot. Keep gems, they are lightweight and valuable.
The wooden totems sell for a plat a piece. The only weapon you should keep
is the occasional cracked staff, which also sell for 1 plat.
Eventually, you will be able to take nobles. They are Level 13-15. They
carry cloth, gems, but also Snakeskin Armor, which sells for about 7 plat
for each piece to other players.
After that, you will find there are two big rooms which are often camped
and which you should camp if you can. One room has three nobles, one
Captain (Level 16) and High Shaman Lenrel (Level 16 or 17). Lenrel carries
a Runed Totem Staff sometimes. Those sell for about 30 plat to other
players. The other room has two nobles, three commanders (Level 15 or 16),
and High Shaman Ren'Rex. Rex also drops a staff from time to time. Captains
and commanders drop snakeskin often.
Use your lull song ALL the time. There is a place with 4 shamans and 2
guards that I basically lived for two levels. I would lull up to 4 of em
and take the other two one at a time. Worked great.
The real kicker? Gnolls hate water. They won't swim after you to try to
kill you. And almost everywhere is close enough to water to get there
before you die. So trouble does not mean death.
There are some other secret places, and other things you will figure out
(some monk quests as well). But this should be good enough.
Oh, and get used to being encumbered. Yes you can carry about 50 over your
weight limit and still win every fight again things that con blue.
Good luck!

There's also a higher level than usual necro that roams the dungeon and I guess is kos to everyone, or at least non-evils.
Just to see where I fit on the cheater scale relative to the rest of this
list, here's a situation from a week or two ago, which involved a bug
exploit.
We were in Splitpaw when someone released the insta-kill necro (I forget
his name). My entire party died. When we returned to get our corpses,
there was no sign of the necro. Whew. Still, we decided that we had
had enough, and we started heading out. On the way out, we ran across
the necro again! This time, he was stuck in a gate. Now, as far as I
know, the path we were taking was the only way out from the depths where
we had retrieved our corpses. If the mob had been working properly, we
surely would have perished again. As it was, we were able to get out
of his range (and out of the dungeon) before any of us succumbed to his
DoT spells, and being stuck, he could not give chase.
So, I admit it. We cheated. We exploited the fact that this guy was stuck
in a gate to escpe with our skins intact. Perhaps we should have stood
there and waited for him to kill us with DoT spells to avoid taking
advantage of the bug. But as usual with issues like this, my question is,
"Where's the fun in that?"

1. Fixed, pending update.
-Lord Soptyvr will now be killed by his own kind.
-Added +Stormreaper and +Stormguard faction hits to evil eyes in beholder, eastkarana, and Runnyeye.
2. Does anyone know more about what happened with the Kurrpok event?
from a post on allakhazam :
Quote:
Last night, I was leaving Paw, and decided to kill these guys (Judges and Executioner). As I was resting up, preparing to attack them, old Kurrpok Splitpaw (or however you spell it) spawned, and the Executioner killed him. Now, for those of you who don't remember back that far, Kurrpok used to be the head of the Splitpaw Clan of gnolls (the ones that lived here back when the game came out, before the Torn-Ears overran the place, and drove them out). Kurrpok used to spawn in the room that the Ishva now spawn in. He dropped a ruby that was one of the eyes for the Jewelled Skull (a nice caster item). When the Executioner killed him, he died mumbling what he used to, way back when... "my eye, blah blah blah". Now back in the day, when you killed him, a DE Wizard (higher than anything in the zone back then - about 30th level)would spawn and demand the gem. To my knowledge, when Kurrpok died last night, the wizard did not spawn (but I don't have track). I bet if you cleared the area (Judges and Exec), when Kurrpok spawned, you could kill him and get the gem. You get the second "eye" by killing Lynguna (or whatever) in Innothule Swamp (the troll woman that you can give rubies to for one of three items-including the nice earring). I don't know if the skull dropping assassin still spawns in West Karana, but I might just have to go check soon, for old times sake. Just kinda fun to watch the Executioner kill Kurrpok.
Quote:
The DE your asking about Zixx something as I recall, use to spawn in response to the death of Kurrpok - he wanted the ruby pendant that Kurrpok dropped back. With the revamp of the dungeon, he no longer spawns.
-Should Kurrpok spawn in the Ishva room and path to executioner?
-Any research about the dark elf or text said?

Editing in that I did level in this zone as a paladin back in the day before the update and it was fun but hard and scary and we only went about halfway in because it was so hard and scary also sorry if this is starting to sound like a erotic fanfic post.

I will dig for Nixx info.
Some relevant discussion from the old eqbards list:
Thursday, December 23, 1999 3:10:13 AM
I have been in Paws ever since it opened up (Hi Fflewduer. Ya I remember ya
in there :) and I like it. I learned the place back when it was the old Paws
and just had to pick up on the new spawn points. I'd have to say that they
added about 50% more spawns in the place. I think this made things a bit
worse than the old Paws in terms of trains. I've seen whole parties of high
level players wiped out in certain areas. An Enchanter or a super good
puller is pretty much required unless you use the massive groups trick.
The old spawn spots used to be Lenrel/Grisok in the back, Ghanex Drah in
the maze, Ren'Rex/Phido up the steps, and Kurrpok/Zixx Nenix thru the water
passage. The first three have been moved out to South Karana so that monks
can still obtain the orange headband. Kurrpok is still inside of Paws. Let's
just say that he is being tried for his 'crimes'...
The new things to go after are close to the same places. As you mentioned,
there is The Ishva Mal, the 'Supreme Ruler' of the gnolls. Rosch Val L'Vlor
has an item befitting of its type. Tesch Val Deval'Nmak also has an item
befitting of its type. I have never gone after Tesch Val Kadvem or Nisch Val
Torask Mashk so I don't know if/what they have on them. My guess is that
they also have fitting items.
The jail cells don't have any secret levers. If you get stuck you either
have to call fiends to help or wait for someone to come and do the Soulfire
quest. :)
And I always hated that shaman room too. It's even worse now. The
Executioner isn't partial to healing an injured gnoll running by. It'll just
light you up instead. =80

From: James Schuldes <jgs@...>
First of all your observation on the linkage between the mobs is correct.
It has always been that way. And that has made it one of the more
challenging places to fite. Trains - ya Paw has always had trains when more
people used to play there. So you made it to the double doors? Wooo hoo!
Those doors are the land mark I used to use for knowing I was about to
safely zone. Relative to the rest of the place - that is about _maybe_ 5
percent of the dungeon (from zone to double doors.) Maybe 10 percent of the
physical length of the place. And there are lower levels.
Past those double doors is a room with some guards and an overhead ramp that
can have mobs too. Past that room is the first bridge. You would have to
clear 4 or more mobs to cross it. Hehe, but you don't have to cross it - you
can jump off of it! Now days - try not to land in the water cause there are
agro snakes in the water now - blue to me at 37/38. More gnolls below.
More rooms with gnolls. And then there is the old shaman's rooms. This is a
spot where the old Paw named shaman's would spawn. You had to fite your way
in here for a Runed Totem Staff or a Skull of J'hnTrvlta. Not sure what the
drop is here these days but there is a steep flight of stairs going up into
a set of rooms - you charge up and bust open the doors and fite both rooms
at once. We had a party of 11 in 2 groups - a 50, 2 44/45, a 40, and some
misc 30's. Woo Hoo this one's a Necro - ouchie! So now you can camp here
but later you gotta fite your way out - or evac now that you got higher
level spells and powers.
Or if you don't jump, you can go further in and fite some more guards and
such. Soon you come to a series of doors. One of the will lead you to the
prison section and this is where you went for various quests. It has levers
to open jail doors and you had to go into a cell for a quest and the doors
would close behind you. And if you tried it solo - you were trapped!!!
Yikes NO WAY OUT!!! Or is there a secret lever??? Hehe - do you remember the
panic of being trapped in a cell at level 9?
The other doors lead to various other sections of rooms with commanders and
nobles (in the old days - not sure what is in here now.) And one route lead
you to the second bridge. This one was populated by 3 groups of gnolls.
The center group was 6 shamans. When you attacked the others the shamans
would heal and buff the others. Don't you just hate that when you beat a
mob to half hp and all of a sudden his hp is back to n++?
Past this place was another section that was a maze of walls that once you
found you way to the back was on of the big dungeon bosses G'hanex Drah -
bad necro gnoll. Wonder if the new bosses are staged here. He was guarded
by zombies that would agro on you through closed doors and agro the whole
room. He had a re-incarnate that would spawn somewhere and you had to be
fast to catch him.
In the other section, there was a certain named sha that if you killed him
would spawn a named DE Necro who would roam the whole dungeon agro on
everyone. Later he was changed to a DE Wizzie. I keep looking out on the
plains for the named one that spawns him. Wonder if they moved that AI
outside or if the inside mobs have a really nasty surprise in-store for
visitors?
Paw was never good for casual pick up groups. You need 2 partys working
together to handle the place. Or be high level such that they don't agro on
you even though you are fighting their buddys 3 feet away. Runnyeye has the
same level linked agro behavior. Paw when you are co-level with the mobs
(or even when they are blue to you) is a hard place. Fight you way in and
either fight your way out - or get gated. Mobs that are linked and work
together to fight you. hard yes - but good hard IMHO.
For me there is more to explore there.
Sylly Songsynger
<Spirit of the Moon>
Bard of the 39th song
somewhere on Innoruuk
p.s. I need at least 2 good groups - wanna come?
p.s.s. there is a route that when you are fighting your way out or running
out that takes you to that top ramp in the room with the double doors. You
can just hop down click the doors, hot key train to zone and you are on your
way <eg>

From: "Tom Henschel" <tomhenschel@...>
Greetings!
Spent a whole night in the new Paw, and thought I would
share my experiences
with everyone. I was only in the old Paw twice, so I had a
sketchy idea of
it (not like some folks who know it inside out). The first
thing i noticed,
was that the layout of the dungeon is awkward for more than
two groups to
use in the first section. The first section is what I
consider to be up to
the double doors. There are 2 places to setup a base, one
being much safer
as it is off the main tunnel to the zone. The gnolls are
linked was the
second thing I noticed. Attack a certain one and you may
get 3. Even if
the other 2 were out of sight. There is a low level caster
in the 1st
portion that casts fear and charm( I tore up a tank with
anthem locked on
and 2 fast weapons).

Seeing as how no one has ever seen old Splitpaw on Blue, and Blue is Green's Beta, I'm guessing Splitpaw on Green will be exactly like it is now, or maybe like it was in Blue's early days, if there was any kind of different version back then (I didn't play in P99's early days).
But I really wouldn't expect the devs to pull what's (essentially) an entirely new zone out of their ass, completely untested, and stick it on Green.
On the optimistic side though .... maybe if the devs get bored once Green is out, and they see all this great research, it could inspire them to create an early Paw, throw it on Blue for a bit for testing, and then maybe it might someday make it into Green 2.0? Never say never.

He seems to have been on Ring of Scale faction:
** Religion: Except for Zixx Nenixx (who used to spawn inside Paw before it was changed), I haven't seen ANY Npc's on Antonica/Odus/Faydwyr. who belong to Ring of Scale (Veeshan Religion). The gypsy fortune teller in Qeynos says that there's someone in the city, but I haven't seen anyone. Would be nice to have a couple dragon cultists floating around SOMEWHERE =) Likewise, on the trade skill scene, need an imbue setup for Veeshan worshippers (this may be in the works for next trade patch though).
https://web.archive.org/web/20010306100453/http://boards.station.sony.com/everquest/Forum2/HTML/052807-4.html
I am curious on the Zixx issue, though. Which gnoll is it that
causes him to spawn? I always saw him (followed shortly by me either
zoning or dying) after killing many, many giant snakes quickly (I
ran into a 50th lvl shaman in there once and he hit me with _all_ the
buffs. At lvl 7 I had 450 hp, and Chloroplast, and an agility of 160.
I was a god. Until Zixx....), and I had a theory that that was what
caused him to spawn (since he's affiliated with the Ring of Scale).
I'm curious as to what he's connected to, since I've never heard much
about him.

Undercon and rarely drops a sapphire:
As for Zixx Nenix, he's only level 24 or so, but suffers (rather, gains from) DVinnitis. Meaning, he hits in the 60s-80s, and packs some rough spells. Good profit for killing him, though. Sometimes drops a sapphire, worth 80 plat to a merchant.

Actually any high shaman may carry the Rune Totem Staff. I am 22nd level and hunt there to get Snake Skine and RTS for friends all the time. I've got the RTS most often off High Shaman in the Noble room that spawn Zixx after killing kurr...somthing SplitPaw (think the lord of splitpaw) Zixx is a Darkelf but not a necro. I survived his spawn by feign deathing. He hit me with spell like frost ....not DoT's like a Necro would and he has no pet. But he is about 23-25 level. I still get exp from some of them in Paw too....so Its not all for loot.

Indeed, Zixx Nenix is no longer more a Necro.

I also found the bilgehunter image which was already posted.
Nothing on the bard list about him that wasn't covered above. Info is very sparse! I will keep digging as I find time.
Edit: more
Giving him the ruby should result in some faction hits and some xp:
However, the second time, we pulled Kurrpok out of the area so Zixx spawned
behind us (not a smart spawn point. He does no follow Kurrpok.) We gave
the ruby to the necro the 2nd time and took serious factions hits. Gained a
bit of exp. but rec'd nothing else in return.

Apparently the named here dropped something called 'snakeskin armor', unique to Paw:

Even if there were no drops and it was a level 10-20 dungeon it would be both a fun experience for players to sort of get back into making it legit classic paw, as well as ease congestion! Imagine the smart players we could all meet at level 10 who congregate here to level through their teens together. It would be a meeting of the minds.
I am definitely going to have to scout around to find out maybe who knows! I hope they don't even tell us about it if they do put in old paw, let us discover it! haha
It would be the one classic, like actually classic experience.
I would wager only a very very few of us leveled in pre paw, and even if we did they dont remember much.
I have the slightest sensation that I remember levelling in early paw, but I cant remember for sure.
It deserves adulation, as it's the one place in classic eq that still remains a mystery.

I agree 100%. I totally prefer a more dangerous dungeon to a fighting in more open areas like the Karanas. And the mystery and exploring...I'm with you 100%. I'll be starting in Qeynos too with some friends, so once I hit 10-ish I think I'll check it out too if nobody else has at that point! :)

I remember doing Splitpaw when it was lower leveled. Aviak tree would be busy so groups with level 20’s could run over to Splitpaw. I think even the gnolls outside were lower leveled too. Didn’t remember the DE inside until I saw pic, my DE SK was ok with him. I think he roamed from deeper in to near the entrance.
Changes to make it higher level were for fast leveling players who wanted more options for hell levels at 30 and 35.

Counts as an indoor dungeon.
In an emergency you can always run or fall into the water and swim quickly to the shore somewhere. You will swim faster than the Gnolls and if you go far enough you will have time to gate before they catch up with you.

SPLITPAW
Location: In the center of the Southern Plains of Karana
click to view expanded map and overlays...
Adjacent Zones: Southern Plains of Karana
Level of Monsters: 8-15+
Types of Monsters: Gnolls, Splitpaw Gnolls, Splitpaw Gnoll Guards, Splitpaw Gnoll Shamans, Giant Snakes, Skeletons, Zombies, Gelatinous Cube
Notable NPC's: several named Shamans, captured Brother
Unique Items: Runed Totem Staves, Giant Snake Fangs
Description
Splitpaw is the home of the Splitpaw clan of gnolls. Splitpaw is the site where in gnoll legend, their god set his foot upon the earth, and the surface markings are his footprint. Nobody knows if this is true, but hunters in Southern Karana know the three talons rising from the ground that mark the entrance to the lair.
Dangers
This is a dungeon for middle level characters, and the difficulty of the dungeon scales relatively slowly from the entrance to the deeper parts of the dungeon. The front entrance is occupied by 6th level gnolls, and their level increases as you get further in, so that by the time you reach the back of the first level, they are about 9th-10th level.
The main danger in this dungeon, as in Blackburrow, is training. The trains here are not huge Blackburrow trains, but little mini-trains where the local gnolls decide to help out their buddies. Starting at the entrance, almost all of the gnolls are with a partner at least, and so you have to be able to take on two 6th level gnolls if you even want to walk in the front door (which is why the level is listed starting at 8 above). Gnolls, like all the half-sentient evil humanoids, have a tendency to flee. Since they have a fair number of hit points and are really chickens, they can make it quite far while fleeing, which makes it so that you have more gnolls joining in than you care to have. If you are from a class who can snare or root, or are in a group and have some leeway, then you can start hunting at low-level. Otherwise, I'd avoid it until you hit about 9th or 10th level.
There is also a problem because in certain areas you will be attacking gnolls thinking there is nobody nearby, and some gnoll will come running around the corner. This is a "feature" of EQ where creatures can tell you are attacking their buddy despite walls being between you and them. This is of special importance at the small room on the other side of the first bridge. There are usually a few gnolls here, and are relatively easy to take (if you've made it this far, you can take them). The danger is that around the corner and through a gate lies a Splitpaw Guard, who will come running if he is close enough, and is a level or two higher then these gnolls. Basically, if you hear the chains rattling, turn and run.
Also be aware that there are some high level shamans in the lower levels, as well as a high level necromancer at the back of the upper level. These dudes are evil, especially the necro, cuz you don't know he's around (unless you can track) until you open the door to the room he's in and his pets come after you. Not fun...
There aren't really any other unique dangers to Splitpaw. If you know group monster management and how not to train, then you can get by well. The only other problem with the zone is that it's a long walk from Qeynos or Highhold Pass. If you can get bound in Arena, that would help.
Benefits
Splitpaw is, by far, one of my favorite zones to hunt in. How many times have I been in there and found more than ten other people hunting in there? None. This makes the zone a dream come true. It is one of the least hunted zones in the game, probably because it's far away from merchants and towns. If you can handle the walk, however, this zone is for you.
The gnolls are pretty easy to handle, given that you are careful. At higher levels (like 11th or so) you have your run of almost the entire upper level, which is nice. You can choose who to fight and when, and go sit amongst the lower level gnolls to rest and meditate. This has also got some great Giant Snake Fang hunting, as the snakes spawn fairly regularly and are easy to get to.
The above ground area of Splitpaw is also a nice area to hunt at a lower level. The gnolls are fairly spread out and walk around (but not too much). This is a little bit easier for you if you can't make it past the first room of Splitpaw because of the gnoll grouping.
Not much else to say about this zone. It's nice, uncontested, simple hunting. My only wish is a closer merchant cuz you will get so bogged down with goods that you wind up throwing out rusty weapons like crazy. I found a bug where your money wraps back to zero once you hit 500 of them by hunting in this zone. Sad...
Travelling To and From Splitpaw
There is only one way to get to Splitpaw, and that is by entering Southern Plains of Karana and travelling to the center. When you see the three bloody claws sticking up from the earth, pass in between them. In what would be the center of the paw, there is a small dark hole facing the claws that is the entrance to Splitpaw. This is easy to miss if you've never seen in before (and the first time I mapped Southern Karana in the beta, I walked over this and never saw it), so keep your eyes peeled, it's there somewhere.

It is the home of personally lovely white gnolls.
The level is almost the same as BB, but the number of PCs is small.
If it is a full party around Lv12-13, it can be suppressed. When playing solo, you need to be careful because it is easy to train (too many enemies).
There is a large snake span place, and it is almost monopoly.
In addition, it is possible to train swimming skills because some places are connected by waterways (some places pass through holes in the water) (bitter smile)
The centerpiece here is a totem cane from high shaman Ren Rex.
In the Rex room, Rex, commander, and shaman appear as a set of three, and in the next room, commander and shaman are spanned as a set.
There is a place where two nobles span in the immediate vicinity, so if you hunt in order, you can make a lot of money.
However, fierce competition with PCs aimed at canes has intensified recently, and it is not so delicious.
There seems to be another necro room, but I don't go there (because I'm ugly (laughs))
If the level rises over time, you will win completely.

It's a common practice in EQ, because they don't want to "break" old stuff when they add new stuff. They did the same with Chardok 2.0 (goblins got moved out to Frontier Mountains), LoY (trolls got moved out of Grobb when the Frogloks took it over), etc.

It wouldn't even be unclassic to give underutilized zones a ZEM increase. Not doing it while adding the 100 other non-classic items is really just curious. The spirit of EQ is exploration, yet nothing is done to prevent 90% of the player base going Crushbone>Oasis>MM>HHK>MM>CoM>SolB>KC>Seb over and over and over and over and over and over. Classic spirit is not being nurtured IMO when the fix is so simple, added ZEM in underutilized zones.
Nearly all of the raid scene is custom content and/or exploited by today's knowledge so that it might as well be custom, I guess I just don't understand why the core of the game has been neglected for so long.

On Live, pretty sure it got revamped a second time and made all the gnolls up in their 50's. I was actually sad that it was changed from lower level to 35ish dungeon. It was out of the way and rather unused. Looking back, I can see why they changed it, Kunark was still a few months away and Classic EQ only had 3 dungeons for 30 to 40 to level in, Cazic, Sol A, and MM, and they were packed.

Well it was a big part of the story in this case though, they put a big theme on this lore, as it was changing origional bad level design.
Instead of admitting that they blew it with that zone, they said, the new Splitpaw Gnolls eradicated the curse of the the Tesch Mas Gnolls (or visa versa?) that were delving too deeply into dark magics, and expunged their leaders and their and in their escape, they now roam the south karanas.
Not saying there isnt story for chardook, as this came months after launch, it was a very big deal, this inspired a lot of people to think the entire world of norrath was going to be a living changing place with GM interactions and stuff, annnnnd then that never happened haha
But at the time, it was no small change, it was an event!

As implied by the Everlore note about a level 24 necro NPC killing everyone in the zone, this was originally a very low level dungeon. It was sparsely populated because it's so far away from cities that CRs were a nightmare for mele classes. I used to hunt the giant snakes along the water because there was no danger of trains. This must have been around level 10, similar to the level you would camp the snake ledge in Blackburrow.

My druid on test server solo'd a bit back in the day. You could charm the snakes and then use them to kill the two first gnoll spawns. The zone was awful after that though. Shit casting through walls, garbage loot, more shit aggroing through walls.

I remember going there when it was low level , it was out of the way and did not have any city or bank nearby but the mobs did drop a lot of good trash loot for that level. Lots of gems and gold. I was playing a wizard and bound outside so I could port and exchange currency for my group a lot. I remember people selling food / drink there , people just became encumbered / ran out of food/drink but it was not as packed with players as Black Burrow so it provided a good place to hunt if you prepared for it.

the original paw had the white gnolls you see in BlackBurrow on occasion and wandering south Karana. It was a much lower dungeon just above blackburrow but not by much. It later became the paw we have on p99, it was revamped a second time on live to house lvl 70ish mobs.

Binds were allowed at release in the arena. There was an incorrect assumption on our server that the entire arena zone was pvp. People didn’t want to bind there fearing they would be caught naked in pvp zone and possibly be zerg grieved.

Based on evidence from these links, I believe Nixx should say "Give me the eye of Kurrpock!" when he spawns, and if given the eye, should reward some plat, xp, and faction hits.
It seems he should also give a grace period of a bit of time before he goes aggro and attacks whoever killed Kurrpock.
However! When you kill King Splitpaw (not his actual name, its x Splitpaw, can't remember the first name) Nixx spawns. Nixx is this bad ass Dark Elf Necro. What is odd is before he attacks the person who killed Splitpaw, he says something like "Give me the heart of (something)". About 5 seconds later you are either dead or charmed killing everyone in Paw. I once killed my whole group, another group, and a few stragglers haha. Was sickly fun.
Anyway, that is who that Dark Elf is, he spawns as soon as the King dies, who ya'll killed for the RTS.
I really want to know what the switch is, and what it is Nixx wants, cause he gives you a little time to respond, then he gets pissed. As far as a key, I have yet to see it, but there are chests around there i have seen.
https://www.oocities.org/theroyalnorrathianguard/rok7.html
Now that someone has brought up this Gnoll Slayer thing, when I think about it, Nixx may have asked for the Eye of soso, not the Heart of soso. I sure wish Paw hadn't changed, I would go have a conversation with Mr. Nixx.
https://www.oocities.org/theroyalnorrathianguard/rok8.html
Every time you'd kill K., Nixx would appear. Funny part is he wasn't aggro;
he was a Ring of Scale faction person and wanted the eye on Kurrpok. If you
gave it to him, he'd vanish and leave you some plat and terrible faction
hits, so we simply slaughtered him. We thought this was part of the Gnoll
Slayer quest, but I guess not.

What is the deal with Tier'dals and me? I have a few friends of that race that are wonderful, but it seems most are despicable. This annoyance roams Splitpaw when released from his hold and seems to always find me. He doesn't ever hurt much, but I can't seem to do much damage to his evil hide before I have to flee. Maybe he didn't like it when I offered to show him that black heart I carry around, or maybe it was the dark elf parts he smelled stinking up my bag... there is also a picture in the gallery.

I stumbled on an even better and annotated map of old Infected Paw just now. Has clear spawn points for the boss mobs and shows where the snakes were.
Edit: The Nixx spawn point is wrong though, see following post

This whole zone is just fascinating to me. REALLY wish I knew what OG Splitpaw was like. Truly does feel like one of the most persistent mysteries of EQ.
Seems like they never really got the zone right in ANY iteration of it, even the 55+ version had pretty lame loot IIRC. But I actually love the idea of it being a teens/early 20's dungeon, since there's not a lot to do in that area and level range if you're into dungeons.

That one mob gave positive Trakanon faction when you killed it.
Can you imagine what this would mean for ganking on the next red server?

crazy Trak faction was even in the game on launch.
That means Kunark plans were cooked in some parts.

There was a discussion a few months back where I questioned how much of kunark was actually planned in classic and one guy claimed a lot and there's little pieces of evidence around. This one would be really interesting.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like the staff had time to add old Paw yet.
In the meantime, here is a nice guide to old Paw from eqclerics (also useful for the devs I think):

my favorite thing about that is the player mentioning it took them a week to get through level 15. While certainly player skill and knowledge is no where near what it is today that is ridiculous and just goes to show how wrong the zems are .

I'd play at least another week if Old Paw was added to Green. Extra fun if the necromancers charmed like they originally did in 1999.
I still like new paw, would just like to experience something new to me (Old paw).

It's funny ... after ten years of "waiting for classic" here ... now that Green/Teal have been released, I feel like a lot of us are back to "waiting for classic".
Here's hoping in 10 years we get a true classic server, with Infected Paw, Charming Necromancers and Shaman, classic ZEMs, the ability to turn in items for quests and get classic experience, and so on.
P.S. Why is this thread still in the Blue forum, of all places?

I would agree that the XP scaling is inaccurate on Green. Not that I'm complaining, as I have a lot less time to enjoy EQ now days compared to 1999... but it took me a few months to actually get to L50 back then.

Cause Green server chat would be like "But this is classic!"
Ironically there is a thread talking about "classic custom" content on the Green board.

BTW, if there are any motivated Infected Paw fans out there ... I started a project, got busy, and will (maybe) one-day restart it ... but IRL I'm super busy ATM, so if anyone wants to help ...
http://wiki.project1999.com/Infected_Paw
The idea was basically to take everything in this thread to create a wiki page that's half a standard zone wiki page (for all the stuff we're certain of) and half is just a good summary of the research data from this thread (for everything else). I thought about splitting them into two pages, and maybe that will happen later, but right now there's not enough stuff to bother.
The way I see it, someday we'll see Infected Paw here right? When we do, we'll want a wiki page, so partly this is just an early start on that. But also I figured it would be a lot handier if all the researchers (and I'd imagine Nilbog too) could see all of the research data in one carefully "curated" page, rather than in its current form (spread randomly across a bunch of forum posts).
So who knows, maybe helping build this page will make Infected Paw come faster, by organizing the data better for our beloved dev supreme? And even if not, at least it helps build the future wiki page for when the zone goes live. Either way: who wants to help?

You could do 30-45 in that time casually abusing the gnoll scroll quest, which apparently is not classic

I was able to find a full spawn dump for the old Splitpaw from an old ShowEQ dump. It does not contain locs but it does contain a full mob list (minus Nixx, sadly) and count of mobs, their level ranges and their low/high hp, which will be very useful.

From the above spawn dump, I discovered that the original Paw had a roaming gelatinous cube, like runnyeye, and other low level mobs, I guess to add "character" to the dungeon.
These posts detail mobs getting stuck on a raising gate in paw, so confirms that bats, gnoll guards and the Gelatinous Cube(s?) would roam up and down the dungeon.
6/30/99
There is a raising gate in PAW that routinely traps bats, gnoll
guards, and gelatinous cubes.

I know how you feel. There are gates with bars in Paw. If you move
into one just as it goes up, you get sucked up into the ceiling. I
got stuck with a gelatinous cube and a bat as well. All you can do is
/petition. You can't stand, sit, camp, or move.

And an explanation of the high shamans and their PHs, and where they spawn:
6/18/99
The two named shamans as well as the two named High Shamans sometimes carry
this staff. Ren'Rex spawns on the lower level in a room at the top of a
staircase - Lenrel spawns in a room off a room behind the four shaman
circle. These are replaced rarely by Grisok and Phido respectively. I'm
not sure what the real difference is between the "shaman" and "high shaman"
other than the fact that the high shamans seem to be several levels higher.
Last night we had the good fortune to kill both high shamans (yellow to me
at 16) and only one carried the staff. Incidentally, you'll know when they
have (or so you think) because they're actually carrying it. Early in my
days, I had the misfortune of killing Ren'Rex, getting excited because it
was my turn to loot and ending up with a worn great staff.

Don't have time currently to read through all of the posts,
Again, I'd like to suggest that if everyone's goal is to get Infected Paw, then in theory we should all want to make things as easy as possible for the devs (as well as for each other), and a wiki page would be far more suited to the task than an (eight page and growing) forum thread.
Just dumping endless quotes and links is great ... if all you're trying to do is assemble a giant pile of quotes and links (that someone else will have to do all the work of digging through). But if we just put a tiny bit more effort in than simple copy/pasting, we could have something a lot more valuable ...

Yes, true. We're all essentially dumping puzzle pieces out onto a table right now, aware that a lot of them are still missing. But there's more tedium in trying to put the picture together before we've got a good idea of what the end result is supposed to look like, and confirmed that most of the outer edge pieces are here, so to speak, and that they don't belong in some other box.
That this thread exists at all helps cut down time spent searching elsewhere, often in vain.

Seriously, it looks really great. If there's still any wiki work to do in about a week (when I finish writing this class) I'll totally be down to help, but it looks like you've already done an amazing job of it and don't need me at all.
Of course, there's no guarantee Nilbog will use any of this, but if he does I can't help but think that wiki page will so much more useful to him.

Hey Loramin, how do I add a Table of Contents to that page?
loramin
03-03-2020, 11:55 AM
It's there ... it's just down in the "future page" section.
By default the table of contents is added automatically near the top of every page. But if you want to control where it shows up (like whoever setup the zone pages did, and I just copied that format), you can control where it goes by using:
__TOC__
So if you just remove that bit from down in the "future page" section, then it will start appearing in the normal place. And if you don't like it there, just paste that bit of text wherever you want it to show up.

Helped a Cleric friend do this quest back in 99, trying to get to the Brother in the jails was fun lol. We died a lot for those spells he was rewarded with...
Between that and the Aegis of Life shield we spent quite a bit of time in that area. Was a fun place, you only went past the double doors in a strong group!

It was usually still just the front area of the dungeon that was regularly camped.
Sadly, still true even today. The basement areas are always empty and out of the way, with plenty of Val mobs to pull which are experience piñatas.
The only problem is, the basement area just beyond the one-eyed gnoll contains the Tesch Val Kadvem who is a serious undercon for his level. The guy has boat loads of hp and can really mess up your day if you pull him thinking he's just a little tougher than the surrounding Tesch Val gnolls.
