View Full Version : In your opinion, what are some of the most overrated bands?

There's a lot of bands that get a lot of credit, many to this day, that I just don't get. I'm sure I'm not alone by any means. What bands do people seem to shit bricks over that you just can't get into?
I'll start with a few. Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden (or anything with Chris Cornell, though Audioslave was decent only for Tom Morello), Bush (that ones 90's rock band that seems to get played every 5 seconds on the radio, does anyone else still listen to the radio?), and Metallica.
Now I will admit that I do like some Metallica. "Kill 'Em All" is one of those albums I could listen to all the way through at least once a day and never get tired of it. But most of their other crap is mediocre at best.
Of course taste in music is subjective. But these are bands that are held to such a high level to this day, and I really do not get it.

Kiss and AC/DC. I never liked Kiss, the lyrics for most of their popular songs were just so dumb. AC/DC was alright, but not as great as some people make them out to be.
I love the hell out of Pink Floyd, but they have like 10 good songs and the rest are just "meh", so probably overrated too.

Agreed on both Kiss and AC/DC. I was born in 1990, so maybe if I was young enough to listen to that kind of music as a kid when it was in it's heyday, I might appreciate it more. But it does nothing for me.
Pink Floyd is okay. Dark Side is a good album, some of The Wall is good, but I would have to agree. Very overrated. I mean even Dark Side is probably not that great in retrospect, but it brings me back the time I discovered the reefers and thought I was cool for using it while listening to said album. There's a lot of music I enjoy just for that reason alone, kind of sentimental in its own way.

I was born in '82, so Kiss was bit before my time too, but my dad loved all that classic rock, so I grew up hearing it daily.

Your entire post makes me want to hunt you down and rip your arms off. STP, Bush, Soundgarden, and Metallica were/are literally some of my favorite bands growing up in the 90's.
The thing about music is it is important to put in context of when it was released. A band like the Beatles may seem like they are mediocre by today's standards. However at the time there was just nothing like them and they inspired a revolution of the music industry. The bands you listed above all became famous in the early 90s... listen to 80s hair bands and then listen to any of the above and you will see that they were very much the first generation of "modern music" or whatever you want to call it. The grunge era changed things in much the same way the Beatles changed rock n roll in the 60s. An entirely different sound was born that simply didn't exist before hand.
But to the Q:
George Straight is the most overrated artist in the history of music.
I live in Texas also...

Slipknot.
They have a few good songs, but I never understood those metal bands where the vocals go from guttural screaming to angelic soft singing.
They do this all while wearing slasher movie uniforms.
Plus there's 800 band members.

Smoking cigarettes on stage is a perfectly legitimate musical talent, also wait and bleed is a good song specifically because of the contrast in singing styles. The slasher uniforms add a touch of whimsy to what is otherwise the most serious and important band of the last century.

Agreed, even though this may piss many people off. Don't get me wrong, I like Tool, I like A Perfect Circle (a bit more than Tool in some ways), yet people lose their shit over Maynard. Recently they played at a local festival/concert that featured a lot of bands. They debuted some new songs and there's videos of it uploaded to Youtube. The comments section is nothing but "how dare you people crowd surf to Tool!" or "how dare you people disrespect Maynard and pull out your phones to record this!"
It's music dude. It doesn't hold that much value. Quit acting like Maynard has to be worshiped anytime he graces someone with his presence. It's like everyone should avert their eyes the second he enters the room. Besides, if those people didn't whip out their phones, you wouldn't have a video to comment on right now.

Meh. I like 90's music a lot, including Grunge, those bands (sans Metallica) just do not do it for me. Nirvana was good. I like Alice in Chains (a bit more hard rock if you ask me, but definitely some Grunge sound). But I think with STP, Bush, and Soundgarden, it's the vocals I don't like. Weiland isn't that great. Cornell, even though his voice is unique and I won't say he's a bad vocalist, it just doesn't really fluff my Garfield, if you know what I mean. In fact the only two songs I kind of like with Cornell being the vocalist is probably Audioslave's "Like a Stone" and Soundgarden's "Burden in My Hand".
I think I like Grunge for the same reasons I like punk rock. Many of the songs sound like degenerate music and the lead singers usually sound so whacked on heroin that they haven't been able to shit in weeks. Cornell has too good of a voice to have that sound.

Pretty much all of modern pop music. The fact that an asshole like Drake has a private jet proves something is very wrong with the market. Rihanna and Gaga are ok but probably overrated.
Madonna is overrated. Not because she is crap, its because she is simply passably good by modern standards yet held up as some kind of genius in pop music.
Bush is not overrated, because he gets a lot of hate and is not universally liked. It's like Nickleback, you can't call him overrated when he gets booed off stage periodically, even if he isn't that good.
I personally hate Arena rock, and consider the entire genre a blight on Rock, and is probably overrated because of how many people seem to throw some ACDC or Kiss songs into an otherwise good rock radio station or establishment.
Metallica's later stuff kind of sucks, their best stuff was Ride the Lightning. Some like the "kill them all" era too, IDK its ok IMO. Not sure if they are overrated because the opinion I just gave is incredibly common.

90s grunge has a special place in my heart, I remember hearing Smells like teen spirit on the radio as my aunt was taking me to Boy Scouts, and I think I still channel the 90s really hard with my taste in style / makeup for better or worse.
Think the last thing I liked on the radio was Incubus - Pardon me. Grunge / good alternative was pretty solidly dead by that point and I went into a big classic rock phase, which I’m now mostly sick of. Then I got into prog rock and melodic death metal. Always hated guttural screaming, but higher pitched screaming and melodic metal do it for me.
Atm I’m just listening to doom metal where it’s like required the singers can’t sing worth a fuck (Black Sabbath / Electric Wizard / The Sword?) and Queens of the Stone Age / Kyuss and other stoner rock.
Grateful Dead always makes me happy. How anyone can dislike the Beatles confuses me, but it’s ok. I will sing along to Sublime till the day I die. Slayer / Sepultura / Pantera is a painful reminder of my I am totally not gay fellas teen years drinking & puking off shitty coors light / Jack Daniels, but I still like them.
Carina Round - Into my blood - first female singer I liked. Love Fiona Apple, Regina Spektor, Daughter, Yeah yeah yeahs, Jolie Holland, The Distillers, Daughter, Ingrid Michaelson.
That’s what I like. Guess I never considered anyone overated. I just decided I don’t like that music and stopped listening to it. Thread is weird music nerd debate.

It's funny you mention Sublime because I was just thinking to myself the other day about how much of a basic bitch band they are. I used to like Sublime, when I was younger and in high school still. But now, I just can't do it. I was out and about the other day and these two high school aged girls were playing a Sublime song on one of their phones (annoying, put in some head phones, but I digress) and sang along with it.
Made me realize that 95% of the people that listen to Sublime are young jits who think that smoking reefer is cool and trendy. I was there once, I get it, but I don't think Sublime deserves the credit they get and I'm just tired of hearing anything by them at this point.
But if there's anything the 90's did right, other than the grunge thing, it was having good alternative music. Alternative music these days is so bad, I really can't listen to any of it. I mean it's flat out terrible. Words can not express my disdain for current alternative music.
Tool, Nine-Inch-Nails, Pink Floyd.
Nine Inch Nails is straight trash. I really never understood Trent Reznor and I never will.

I'm right winged, not conservative, but right winged, and I listen to a lot of punk music that does nothing but shit on right-winged ideologies. Does it offend me? No, I still like said music.
But liberals can't handle any form of intellectual diversity. Either you think like them, or you're the enemy. I remember Morrissey saying he would "push a button to kill Trump" if he had the chance. I wonder how many libs flocked to him them. Now they're ripping his posters down. It's hilarious.

There are even record stores taking their albums off the shelves over his political beliefs (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/record-store-bans-morrissey-albums-far-right-support-838984/)

MUSE. Not because they are particularly bad, nor because they are widely believed to be better than they are. More because MUSE fans don't consider any other act to be worth listening to in comparison. I know all bands have this problem, being over rated by the fans, but with MUSE this phenomenon seems to be particularly prominent.

More stuff about how leftest are violent because of twitter remarks at 11:00.
"Black Lives Matter has never advocated violence in any fashion or permitted it within its ranks—though one black man, Micah Xavier Johnson, who killed six Dallas police officers in 2016, used rhetoric similar to BLM’s, he had never been a member or participant."
LOL 'bu but... He wasn't REALLY inspired by BLM!'
Sure...he only carried out his attack during a BLM rally and all of his online activities contained support for BLM, TYT, and more...
No true Scotsman.
Oh, and all the other police killings that were inspired by BLM like the one in Louisiana, New York, and Chicago (just to name a few).
Let's not forget about the mass shooting that took place in Texas as a retaliation for Dylan Roof's attack...also a BLM supporter...
Yep, nothing to see here...
Also... "The officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call when Wilkes – clad in camouflage body armor and a helmet – opened fire, authorities said."
It was a domestic dispute check, literally nothing to do with any ideology at all. But the guy visits 4chan once and all of a sudden the media runs with a nonsense theory.
