Hi guys!
I was really interested in EQ like 20 years ago but couldn't play it
tried some years ago the trial on the official server and really enjoyed it (I made a frog rogue)
I'm going to start here but I don't know which class and race should I make
is there any website I could check?
also I will probably want to join a guild
are there any newbie friendly guilds?

thanks!

The wiki here is a good starting point, lots of good info and guides there :)

Play what ever class suits your play style. For your first character you might not even like it once you get past 20 or so. It may take a while to figure out what suits you. Tank classes are always good, as are healers.

What style of play do you enjoy? E.g. healing, tanking, damage, support...what do you like doing the most in games?

ah yeah! I feel really dumb since I remembered that wiki just after making my post, thanks!

depends from game to game
I don't know how tanking works, how mana regen works, if you need reagents like in ultima online, etc..
I'd probably want a comfortable class to understand better the game, and then decide a class if I dislike my first choice
is rogue okay? DPS probably doesn't have much responsibilities
or maybe a shadow knight/pally since they can tank (I like tanking) and heal/use their pets

thanks guys!

I wouldn't advise melee for your first character here because it will be rough going early on.

It really depends on your play style. If you like to be grped or alone when playing...if you like to be a support or a more key class role.

How important is it to you to be "useful" to your friends and groups is probably the most important question someone new to playing EQ should ask. EQ isn't balanced and, while all the classes can be useful and fun to play, there are some that definitely shine in this regard.

If the mechanics of the game seem too much for you you might try one of the simpler classes first to get your bearings in the world and make some friends or join a guild.

I would suggest rolling Druid or Necro to be honest. Will be so much easier on you now and in the future on alts.

thanks guys! should I avoid rogue then? it was the melee class I was considering
the other one was druid but I've read somewhere that from lvl 50 they tend to be less useful
it's okay if I can at least have fun from 1-50 while deciding which other class to make and making some money

about usefulness in a group, I was planning on playing mostly in groups
I've soloed too much in other mmos and I'm already tired

play enchanter. you learn to swim by being pushed into the deep end. if you last 16 lvls and get breeze (mana regen buff), welcome to the addiction

Dont fret making a melee character, weapons, armor and haste are very cheap and easy to get here. Play whatever you enjoy the most. Join one of the many leveling guilds for chat and support. It's a game so have fun, good luck!

This is not good advice, melee here have access to over powered weapons for bottom of the barrel prices. Play any class you want, try them out. I would say most classes come more into form in the 20-30 range.

Melee is fine just stay away from warriors. Eventually you'll have to pay the piper.

Agreed.

I even recommend Rogue to beginners because:

1) You don't have a lot of responsibilities in a group

2) Simple to play (see #1)

3) in high demand for groups

4) Hide/Sneak helps you explore zones you haven't learned yet

5) You can be a Dwarf

6) Relatively easier Epic Quest

7) You can steal (it's a selling point)

8) You can....fuck. Rogues are boring, huh?

This server was my first experience with any sort of classic EQ. My first character was a Rogue; he is my main and also the only character I've reached 60 with. I never had any problems getting into a group because I was "under-geared". I did eventually make a Druid for porting services to help fund the Rogue and other alts. Rogue's are pretty simple to play as some have said, but almost always being the experience group in raids is why I enjoy it. And there are some high-end camps with valuable drops that require Rogues, namely Crypt/Emperor in Old Sebilis.

Welcome to P99 and EQ!
I hope you're ready for an awesome game experience that's very different from what most people play these days. There are a lot of hard parts and quirks to EQ but it's a very rich and rewarding play experience. And I've played on and off for 20 years and there are still zones I don't really know.

As for race/class, that's something you'll probably go back and forth on for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if you tried out a few different characters. It's not a bad thing to do as there is a lot to learn about each class and genre of class (melee/hybrid/caster/priest).

In the end you just need to play whatever sounds like the most fun to you. I went with warrior here on P99 as my first and main character because that is what sounded most fun to me. And it has been fun! Sure there's been some tough levels but overall I'm very glad I rolled warrior.

Melees:
Warrior - Tank, mainly goes duel wield but at times 2 hand is better option. Mainly groups, but if gear permits you can solo (slowly) most levels.
Rogues - Huge DPS, backstab backstab backstab. Sneak/hide are very helpful skills in many situations, including raids. Thrive in groups and always wanted.
Monks - Huge DPS, can mend (self-heal), is good with both duel wield and 2 handers. Feign death is used in all sorts of circumstances. Good in groups and solo!

Hybrid:
Bard - jack of all trades class. Plays songs which you don't have to stay still for! What they lack in tanking/melee abilities they make up for in utility. Easiest class to solo to 60 fast but also very useful in groups.
Paladin - warrior/cleric combo. Decent tank but even better aggro capabilities than warrior. No duel wield (1hand/shield or 2hand). Strongest against undead. Weak heals. Great group tank and can also solo.
Shadowknight - warrior/necro combo. Decent tank but even better aggro capabilities than warrior. No duel wield (1hand/shield or 2hand). Lifetaps, DoTs, Feign death, weak pet. Great group tank and can also solo (better than paladin).
Ranger - warrior/druid combo. Not as reliable for tanking stats but has good aggro. Primarily duel wields (decent DPS but less than war/rog/mnk). Lots of utility spells from druid class, heals, snares, Spirit of the Wolf (run speed), etc.

Caster:
Necromancer - arguably the easiest/best solo class. Huge lifetaps and DoTs. Decently strong pets, can charm undead, and has feign death. Most necros solo through the levels but they do fine in group settings as well.
Magician - big DPS, strongest summoned pet, and decent nukes. Magicians can summon all sorts of items that can be shared with group. Also desirable for Call of the Hero spell, which is a high level spell that summons another player to your location. Good in both group and solo environments.
Enchanter - I'd say one of the most OP classes in P99. Mana regen buffs for mana users and haste for melee. Lull, mezz, charm, all the crowd control you'd ever want! Charmed pets are strongest in game. Very desirable for groups but also good soloability.
Wizard - Unfortunately one of the weaker casters in P99 but still has their own niche. Most wizards solo (not very desirable for groups). Wizards are nukers, so lots of kiting mobs. Able to teleport and translocate (huge plus to wizards).

Priests:
Cleric - Primary healers in EQ. Have strongest HP/AC buffs. Biggest heals, with complete heal at higher levels. Absolutely needed for most raid targets. Horrible solo but wanted in almost all groups.
Druid - One with nature. Heals, Spirit of the Wolf, snares, roots, DoTs, nukes, pretty versatile class. However, by higher levels they are outclassed in most categories when it comes to grouping and raids. Good for powerleveling and buffs (protection of the glade is a great buff). Most commonly used teleporting class above wizards (good to make money).
Shaman - Another very OP class in P99. TONS of buffs, haste, slows, pet, DoTs, heals, and torper (super strong lvl 60 heal). Great in groups but also strong soloing. Everyone loves having a shaman around.

hey thanks a lot people! you're really really helpful!
I finally decided to go with a druid, I'm almost lvl 4
played solo but I think I'll group to kill some orcs
my next class will be definitely a rogue :)
how does the loot work? do I have to share it manually?

My first class in 1999 was Ranger and loved it. Very gear dependent but can use a lot of cool weapons and armor. You also get spells at lvl 9 like Druid spells but always behind in the power. You also get the useful tracking skill and the most popular SoW at 39 I believe. You can dish about a lot of DPS,easily pull aggro from weaker classes and can shoot the hell out of a bow. You can do a little bit of everything so it keeps it interesting. You won’t be as popular in groups that need tanks or healers but you bring a lot of skills to the table and are a great puller do to the tracking.

are arrows expensive in the long run or are they affordable? this is something I've been wondering for a while now

Ranger get SoW at lvl 30. Arrows are very cheap to rather expensive, depending on dmg and reach, but u can craft ur own or summon them with an item at lvl 45(tolan bracer)

how does the loot work? do I have to share it manually?

The first person to 'loot' the dead mob gets all the money that was on that mob.

if you type /auto in your chat window, you will automatically split this money 'when you loot the corpse' with your group. (type /auto again to turn this feature off)

The split isnt exactly fair, it prioritizes the looter... but over time in a group if you all /auto and different people are looting, it should be good.

Basically it splits each type of coin starting with the looter... so if mob has 5p 5g 5s 6c, eatch person will get 1p 1g 1s 1c apart from the last person in the list who will just get 1c. (i am not sure how the game decides the order here)

------------

For item drops, this is down to the group to decide how to do it.

One person loots all, sells and splits the cash
Taking turns on the good drops (cash drops, gems etc)

For actual items
NBG (Need Before Greed) - item goes to those who its an upgrade for.
Greed - item goes to anyone so they can sell it.
Alphabetical - item goes to next person in the group by alphabetical name who hasn't got a drop yet.

Randomizing.
If you choose to randomize for an item, there is an in game random number generator. Someone will say random 100...

Type /rand 100 and you will be provided with a random number between 0 and 100.
Highest role will get the item.

-------------------

There may be other ways, but the best advice i can give is to make sure you understand how loot is being divided when you join a group so there are no arguments later when something drops.

Also don't be a loot-whore, nobody likes a group member who hoovers up all the loot and constantly moans about missing out on loot.

thanks man! that's really helpful. I was just wondering if I should just try to loot before anyone else from time to time like in other games or don't mind at all. It feels like the gear is really important when meleeing at least (some nice guy gave me a wrist that barely gave me some hp and stats but it's really noticeable).
