What are Dark Elves Best at?

Hello!

I am looking into creating a new character, and wanted to try playing a dark elf.

The Wiki doesn't really give a lot of information in terms of what Classes they are best at.

I considered playing a Dark Elf Enchanter, but I had heard that if you're going to play an Enchanter you have to play High Elf or it's basically not even worth it.

Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

They do well in any class they can choose except maybe warrior (no slam, bad stats). Hide is a great racial ability that is useful for all classes.

They make perfectly fine enchanters. Hide is very useful as a cheap charm break.

If you're that concerned about starting stats, at the end of the day you're an enchanter and can turn into whatever you want anyway. But I wouldn't worry too much about those since it's not that out of reach to max your stats with gear in the Velious era.

But a Dark Elf is a good choice for any Int caster class, and an okay choice for a couple other things.

Starting stats are almost meaningless.. there are enough cheap items to get any stat you want. But go dark elf because this game is almost unplayable without ultravision and you don't wanna cast it every time you zone.

I redid my play groups cleric from halfling to dark elf. No regrets; that snare neck has been super handy at times and the robes look super slick coupled with plate helmets.

They make debatably the best clerics(snare clicky). Enchanters are good too but erud or HE have a little better stats. It's not that big of a deal, though. In fact, if you are playing this character untwinked, dark elf probably is at least as good as HE/erud for hide.

Wizards by a long shot. Having hide to med after a quad/afk med is great. Can't tell you how many times I would just afk right in the middle of wandering mobs where any other race has to go and find some place to safely sit before they get fixed invis at 55.

Dark Elf advantages as enchanter:
1. Hide
2. Can do the stein of Maggok quest right at level 8 (if you got a friend) instead of waiting until they get illusion darkelf much later in life.
3. Great starting area (noob log, plenty of spider silk and bone chips, and close to EC to sell those items for some money)

Its not good on a mage where it clashes with pets. Because of the rhythm and nature of how a wizard plays, the option of a diety that has better faction across the board than agnostic, I believe Wizard is a Dark Elfs greatest class, and Dark Elf is likely the wizards best race.

I think its kinda sad we don't have the classic lighting in the game, where ultravision and infravision matter a lot. Nearlly blind at night and in some dungeons if you didn't have one of those vision types. Ultravision was a massive boon, and infravision a major boon. Now they are virtually irrelevant.

serious answer now. if you are just starting out id so maybe go with necro? kinda gives you a somewhat easy time starting out. ill also second the thing about min/maxing, it doesnt really matter. you will either never max out anyway or find a bunch of people to play with that dont give two shits as long as you know how to play the character somewhat decently

Dark elves have a very solid starting zone. You can rake in the silks and HQ pelts to sell in EC next door.

And their starting city is the coolest maze in the game.

Halfling Clerics get Hide AND Sneak (and +5% XP bonus). The only thing DE Clerics have over Halflings is the snare necklace.

But Dark Elf Wizards are the only race with Hide, so IMHO DE Wizard > DE Cleric.

Basketgnomes, FTE races, trap hurdling, but they are not good at Halas pond hockey or Velketor ice skating. Really just depends what kind of sports you want your toon in.

Iksar is the best necro by a country mile. Dark elves look dope - but since you're almost always in skelly form, you don't get to see yourself all that often anyways.

I'd say not rogue specifically since DE mask is so easy to get.

I am not personally experienced with this, but it's my understanding that Hiding while Feigned Death wipes agro list (or some other interaction/boon). If thats true, dark elf Shadowknights and Necromancers have some interesting flavor/capacity unavailable to anyone else. Altho, both classes can pick other races that have arguably more accommodating stats.

Plate Helm + Robe looks dope AF tho, Inkies pretty high up there on the Fashion Quest charts.
