View Full Version : Miscellaneous: Classic system messages from old log files

I audited mcoy’s log files for system messages that are used in game and compared to what P99 is using. I’ve no clue if these are uneditable in the client or what, but figured I’d report everything I found and let you decide what can be done.
I’m assuming dev team has access to these logs, which I have no reason to believe are edited, and can also be backed up with classic screenshots. If you don’t have them, let me know and I can transfer them to you (or perhaps mcoy direct). I believe he has other files, but I only have 3 of his characters: Qien, Expired, Mcoy.
His characters spanned end of velious to mid Luclin, so is good evidence of the messages changing between those times.
Thanks for your time devs, I like these little nuanced details. #classic.
-----------------------------------
-----------------------------------
Auto attack messages on P99 are not classic, we should be using the pre-Luclin message for entirety of server:
From Expired’s Log:
[Sun Nov 11 15:17:20 2001] Auto attack on.
[Sun Nov 11 15:21:30 2001] Auto attack off.
After Luclin (note the ‘is’):
[Mon Jun 24 15:08:04 2002] Auto attack is on.
[Mon Jun 24 15:08:05 2002] Auto attack is off.
Intimidating yourself message is also wrong on P99, using Luclin message:
Classic Message:
[Sun Nov 11 15:25:25 2001] Try intimidating someone other than yourself.
Luclin Message:
[Mon Jun 24 16:13:21 2002] You can't intimidate yourself!
I’m not sure if rogues should have a different message, but Expired Monk log to my P99 monk log shows this should be the ‘locked door’ message you receive:
[Mon Nov 19 02:24:09 2001] It's locked and you're not holding the key.
Here is what we get on P99:
[Sun Jul 31 19:22:03 2016] You must have a lock pick in your inventory to do this.
As far as I can tell, there maybe should just be a universal trade cancellation message as follows (its possible this was just from running out of range and not clicking cancel, but did not see messages of 'who' cancelled the trade until Luclin):
[Wed Nov 28 19:24:11 2001] The trade has been cancelled.
I should have tested running out of range on P99, but found it odd I didn't get this message once in my log file that spanned a year.
On P99 we get:
[Sat Feb 27 14:08:12 2016] You have cancelled the trade.
[Thu Mar 03 21:28:21 2016] Muggwin has cancelled the trade.
Line of site message seems off too:
Classic:
[Thu Nov 15 19:28:01 2001] You can't see your target from here.
Luclin message that P99 uses:
[Mon Jun 24 16:13:02 2002] You cannot see your target.
I was surprised, but I didn’t see a consent message in my log file (is it not being logged?).
Should be:
[Thu Nov 15 19:59:52 2001] You have given sineras permission to drag your corpse.
[Mon Jun 24 15:23:58 2002] You have denied thurrin permission to drag your corpse.
All is see in my P99 log file is:
[Sat Jul 23 09:46:20 2016] To remove consent, use /deny <playername>
Maybe you want the help tip for new players and alleviate CSR issues? But can you add in the other messages?
It looks like the resurrection message should be changed as well:
[Thu Nov 15 20:14:16 2001] You regain some experience from resurrection.
[Thu Nov 15 20:14:16 2001] You are being resurrected...
On P99 we use (unsure if order of messages can be flipped as well):
[Tue May 03 22:19:15 2016] You are exhausted.
[Tue May 03 22:19:15 2016] You regain some experience from resurrection.
A stickler for details, but you have duplicate lore item loot wording in 2 sentences, but should be one:
Classic:
[Fri Nov 16 00:11:41 2001] You cannot loot this Lore Item you already have one.
P99 uses:
[Fri Mar 18 17:46:13 2016] You cannot loot this Lore Item. You already have one.
I was surprised to see this one, but apparently you should also get a message if you get hit with a spell while FD (unsure if there is a message others should see):
[Sun Nov 18 00:42:34 2001] You are no longer feigning death, because a spell hit you.
I don’t know what item he was using (proc or click) but I didn’t find this message in my P99 logs:
[Mon Nov 19 02:07:29 2001] You are not sufficient level to use this item.
In the Qien/Expired logs he doesn’t get this message when bandaging himself (we get it on P99 and shouldn’t) but does receive the message when others bandage him:
On self:
[Sun Nov 11 15:26:38 2001] You begin to bandage yourself.
[Sun Nov 11 15:26:49 2001] The bandaging is complete.
[Sun Nov 11 15:26:51 2001] You begin to bandage yourself.
[Sun Nov 11 15:27:01 2001] The bandaging is complete.
[Sun Nov 11 15:27:04 2001] You begin to bandage yourself.
From others:
[Tue Nov 13 04:01:20 2001] You are being bandaged. Stay relatively still.
[Sat Feb 09 21:42:40 2002] You are being bandaged. Stay relatively still.
/time is using the wrong format.
Classic:
[Wed Nov 28 19:15:33 2001] It is 11 PM on Tuesday, the 3rd day of August, of the year 3209.
[Wed Nov 28 19:15:33 2001] Earth Time: Wed Nov 28 19:15:33 2001
P99 uses:
[Sat Jun 25 10:16:23 2016] Game Time: Saturday, June 21, 3104 - 5 PM
[Sat Jun 25 10:16:23 2016] Earth Time: Saturday, June 25, 2016 10:16:23
When doing a /who and turning up no results, should return 3 lines, but P99 only does 1.
Classic:
[Thu Nov 15 18:10:53 2001] Players in EverQuest:
[Thu Nov 15 18:10:53 2001] ---------------------------
[Thu Nov 15 18:10:53 2001] There are no players in EverQuest that match those who filters.
P99 only shows:
[Sat Jun 25 08:11:23 2016] There are no players in EverQuest that match those who filters.
Bit of a nuance, but didn’t see this in any of my logs, but after porting or zoning while in a group you should get a message that ‘You have joined the group.’ after loading.
Here’s a transcript showing he joined the group, loaded, receives portal messages, then gets the join message again:
Expired Log:
[Thu Nov 15 18:23:38 2001] Sevgi invites you to join a group.
[Thu Nov 15 18:23:38 2001] To join the group, click on the 'FOLLOW' option, or 'DISBAND' to cancel.
[Thu Nov 15 18:23:40 2001] You notify Sevgi that you agree to join the group.
[Thu Nov 15 18:23:40 2001] You have joined the group.
[Thu Nov 15 18:24:25 2001] Raisinn creates a mystic portal.
[Thu Nov 15 18:24:25 2001] Sevgi creates a mystic portal.
[Thu Nov 15 18:24:26 2001] LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
[Thu Nov 15 18:24:49 2001] You have entered Butcherblock Mountains.
[Thu Nov 15 18:24:49 2001] You have joined the group.
Mccoy log:
He is in a group, dies, loads, ‘You have joined the group.’. He was exping in LoIO and died and loaded in FV.
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:15 2001] You tell your party, 'shite'
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:15 2001] Kuguk slashes charbone skeleton for 61 points of damage.
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:16 2001] Charbone skeleton bashes YOU for 1 point of damage.
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:16 2001] You have been slain by charbone skeleton!
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:18 2001] Returning to home point, please wait...
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:18 2001] LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:45 2001] You have entered Firiona Vie.
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:45 2001] You have joined the group.
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:50 2001] It begins to rain.
[Sun Nov 11 23:39:08 2001] Beginning to memorize Healing...
[Sun Nov 11 23:39:09 2001] You have finished memorizing Healing.
When you try and Bind Wound an NPC you should get this message:
Classic:
[Sun Nov 11 15:20:03 2001] You cannot bandage a non-player entity.
On P99 you get:
You must target a player to bandage.
When binding above 50% or 70% you should get the message:
[Sun Nov 11 15:27:15 2001] You cannot be bandaged past 500f your max hit points.
[Sun Nov 11 15:27:15 2001] You cannot bandage your target past 500f their hit points.
(Note the pre-% symbol in log), then post velious:
[Thu Jun 27 16:11:43 2002] You cannot be bandaged past 50 percent of your max hit points.
[Thu Jun 27 16:11:43 2002] You cannot bandage your target past 50 percent of their hit points.
On P99 we get the message(s):
You cannot bind wounds above 50% hitpoints.
You cannot bind wounds above 70% hitpoints.
If your friend list is empty you should get this message…
Classic:
[Sun Nov 11 15:19:05 2001] You have no friends, but you can add some with: /friends <name>
On P99 we get this abomination:
List of Friends
---------------
You have no friends! Awww, how sad…
Maybe you should add one by typing: /friend <name>
Not sure if this can be done with the client, but the ‘Train’ button I don’t think should grey out if you are out of points, but let you click on it still (or give message when clicking greyed out button). Should get this message (we don’t get any on P99):
[Thu Nov 15 18:05:15 2001] Grand Master Glox tells you, 'You don't have any practices left. Come back after you have adventured more.'
When trying to loot an item from a corpse but you have no room in inventory you should get a message (you get none on P99… tried with full inventory + item on a cursor).
Classic message:
[Sun Nov 11 15:32:50 2001] You cannot loot this item no room in your inventory.

Both of these are used for all classes on P99 depending on whether the door is pickable. E.g.:
Sleeper's Tomb entrance:
[Wed Jan 09 22:48:51 2019] It's locked and you're not holding the key.
Locked door in Veeshan's Peak:
[Wed Jan 09 02:28:01 2019] You must have a lock pick in your inventory to do this.

Thanks paul, I'll look over the log file from Mcoy again, but I believe his message was from the boulder in paineel to hole or paineel elevator.
In which case, if I'm understanding you right, means p99 is using the wrong message?

If the message always corresponds to door/trigger type then the boulder should give the lock pick message and the elevator should give the key message. It's certainly possible this wasn't the case in live classic era and it depended on your class - e.g., if you weren't a rogue/bard then you never saw the lock pick message. Or perhaps it was more arbitrary, or the lock pick message simply didn't exist and only the key message was used in classic era.

As a follow up I searched through the log files mcoy made available to me, and in his Qien log file I see him in Paineel testing on the boulder in the water (which requires a key but IS pickable):
[Mon Nov 19 02:24:09 2001] It's locked and you're not holding the key.
Also in Plane of Sky, Island 1 (assuming a teleport pad, which requires a key but IS NOT pickable):
[Sun Nov 11 00:36:52 2001] It's locked and you're not holding the key.
This leads me to conclude in era you should only get the same message regardless of whether or not a door is pickable. To be fair, I've no clue if there were specialized Bard/Rogue only messages that helped indicate if a lock was pickable.

Ugh, sorry for the bunch of replies... but also to be fair, I didn't see anything in the log file of mcoy clicking on a door that no key existed for (like the door in Seb). So not sure if those had a lock pick message. If anyone had some true classic logs to search through I would love to have them, never know what gems can be found.

Noticing some more things as I go through these files (I'm building a parser to compare P99 log messages to these logs... but its slow going with a 2 month old baby and a Three-nager).
In the above example where he died from the charbone skeleton there is this line:
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:16 2001] You have been slain by charbone skeleton!
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:18 2001] Returning to home point, please wait...
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:18 2001] LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:45 2001] You have entered Firiona Vie.
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:45 2001] You have joined the group.
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:50 2001] It begins to rain.
Just a generic load message, but on P99 we get a zone specific message and an additional line:
[Wed Dec 07 19:57:54 2016] You have been slain by an elemental warrior!
[Wed Dec 07 19:57:54 2016] You have lost experience.
[Wed Dec 07 19:57:58 2016] Returning to The Hole, please wait...
[Wed Dec 07 19:57:58 2016] LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
[Wed Dec 07 19:58:16 2016] You have entered The Hole.
It doesn't appear as if the 'You have lost experience.' message should be given? I actually don't have the raw logs on this computer, but can double check tomorrow to confirm.
Another message is the drinking of alcohol. The message you receive when you drink a beverage yourself is correct, but when you see others drink alcohol you get a wrong message.
Classic message:
[Thu Nov 15 20:04:33 2001] Glug, glug, glug... Operian takes a swig of Fish Wine.
P99 message:
[Sat Sep 03 09:41:13 2016] Glug, glug, glug... Fannop takes a drink from a Fish Wine.
Lastly for tonight, I found these messages in mcoy's logs:
[Wed Nov 14 01:35:53 2001] You must stand up and be still to wave.
[Tue Dec 18 16:34:54 2001] You must stand up and be still to rudely gesture.
[Tue Jun 25 00:34:02 2002] You must stand up and be still to perform this action.
When I tried to sit and /wave and /rude on P99 I just get the generic 'You must stand up and be still to perform this action.'
I don't know what other emotes had specific standing instructions, but those 2 for sure did.
I'll keep posting messages as I find them... thanks for caring.

Correct on P99.
Thank you, I must never have tried to use a clicky below the necessary level. I only had the 'you will is not sufficient' style message in my P99 logs.
EDIT: Also just confirming that the 'You have lost experience.' message should not exist on P99, it wasn't in any of the mcoy logs.

Well mcoy shared with me the balance of his logs and it so happens he had a rogue log (Eyepick) that happened to be trying to pick the lock at the bank in North Freeport (which is pickable, but no key exists for). Here is some of the log:
[Fri Nov 16 17:52:48 2001] Players in EverQuest:
[Fri Nov 16 17:52:48 2001] ---------------------------
[Fri Nov 16 17:52:48 2001] [48 Rogue] Eyepick (Barbarian) <Dynasty> ZONE: freportn
[Fri Nov 16 17:52:48 2001] [53 Channeler] Cindani (High Elf) <Dynasty> ZONE: gfaydark
[Fri Nov 16 17:52:48 2001] [ANONYMOUS] Rarkorrn <Dynasty>
[Fri Nov 16 17:52:48 2001] There are 3 players in EverQuest.
[Fri Nov 16 17:52:54 2001] Soris Silverfield glowers at you dubiously -- he appears to be quite formidable.
[Fri Nov 16 17:52:56 2001] Soris Silverfield tells you, 'Welcome to my bank!'
[Fri Nov 16 17:53:01 2001] You are currently bound in: East Freeport
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:07 2001] Soris Silverfield tells you, 'Come back soon!'
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:14 2001] It's locked and you're not holding the key.
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:15 2001] It's locked and you're not holding the key.
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:33 2001] You do not Sense any traps.
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:45 2001] You begin to hide...
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:46 2001] You have hidden yourself from view.
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:47 2001] You begin to sneak...
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:47 2001] You are as quiet as a cat stalking its prey.
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:56 2001] You are not sufficiently skilled to pick this lock.
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:58 2001] You are not sufficiently skilled to pick this lock.
[Fri Nov 16 17:55:59 2001] You are not sufficiently skilled to pick this lock.
He is at the banker, and gets the 'It's locked and you're not holding the key.' message. Should confirm this message should be the universal locked door message for all classes (no special message for rogue / bard).
More info to come as I build this message sniffing parser!

Section from Qien's logs:
[Wed Nov 14 19:04:20 2001] You have entered Western Wastes.
[Wed Nov 14 19:04:31 2001] Kiladen shouts, 'yes Your god has showen his face=)'
[Wed Nov 14 19:04:35 2001] A sentinel`s voice invades your thoughts: ''Beware mortal! This land is marked by Veeshan, and is sacred to her brood. None but Dragonkin are welcome here. Your life is forfeit if you proceed. Ignore this message at your peril!''
[Wed Nov 14 19:04:39 2001] Episcia shouts, 'godLET'
[Wed Nov 14 19:04:43 2001] Caym shouts, 'no im still wearing my mask'
[Wed Nov 14 19:05:14 2001] A sentinel`s voice invades your thoughts: ''Beware mortal! This land is marked by Veeshan, and is sacred to her brood. None but Dragonkin are welcome here. Your life is forfeit if you proceed. Ignore this message at your peril!''
[Wed Nov 28 13:57:34 2001] You have entered Western Wastes.
[Wed Nov 28 13:57:36 2001] A sentinel`s voice invades your thoughts: ''Beware mortal! This land is marked by Veeshan, and is sacred to her brood. None but Dragonkin are welcome here. Your life is forfeit if you proceed. Ignore this message at your peril!''
The 'A sentinel`s voice' shout is not in any of my P99 logs, so don't believe it is functioning properly. It seems like he gets it after the first few seconds after zoning in, but did find another section where he got it twice in same zone (maybe there was a area that tripped the message?). Do what you will.
Oh, and notice it should say 'You have entered Western Wastes.'
On P99 we get:
[Fri Sep 02 22:37:03 2016] You have entered Western Wastelands.
Regarding the "you have joined the group" message on zoning - I think I remember a patch note in live along the lines of resolving missed /group messages while zoning because the server/client now maintains group membership while zoning - or something along those lines. I'm guessing those messages are from before that fix being implemented.
-Mcoy
Also I noticed in some of your excerpts that /who results return yourself as the first result, instead of the last one on the list like we get on p99.
I really should read through my own logs sometime...

I don't know how to do the neat box thingy that Rygar uses but here's one I see from Loading's log on RZ:
[Thu Nov 22 18:42:49 2001] A shriveled mummy tries to hit YOU, but misses!
[Thu Nov 22 18:42:49 2001] a shriveled mummy was hit by non-melee for 1 points of damage.
[Thu Nov 22 18:42:49 2001] A shriveled mummy was pierced by thorns.
[Thu Nov 22 18:42:49 2001] A shriveled mummy hits YOU for 24 points of damage.
[Thu Nov 22 18:42:49 2001] You have been slain by a shriveled mummy!
[Thu Nov 22 18:42:51 2001] Your Location is 1843.00, 93.00, 12.40

[Thu Nov 22 18:43:13 2001] You have entered West Freeport.
You're able to run the /loc command after dying. On p99 I don't believe you're able to do so, as I still have the habit of hitting my /loc hotkey when I die and I'm pretty sure it doesn't work. I'm not on a char that I'd be willing to eat a death on to test it atm.

Curious how implementable this stuff is maybe someone like Telin/Nilbog can chime in? Devs must have plenty of their own logs and this seems like low hanging fruit if it isn't blocked outright by client shenanigans.

I would have to check the rest of the logs to verify, but in the other death example I posted there was also a 2 second delay from slain to load message. Not sure how much delay is on P99.
And Caiu, I'm pretty sure at least some are fixable, as nilbog changed the zone load name of the Hole based on what I found in Mcoy logs. I wouldn't put it past that EQmac logs were used for a lot of system messages.
Would definitely like confirmation if I'm wasting my time though.
Never mind - tested with both a hotkey and by manually entering the /loc command:

Parser is chugging along nicely, dusting off some more gems. Apparently we have the critical hit message slightly off on P99.
From Mccoy logs:
[Sun Nov 11 22:17:02 2001] Kuguk Scores a critical hit!(27)
[Sun Nov 11 22:20:17 2001] Kuguk Scores a critical hit!(25)
[Wed Nov 14 21:40:46 2001] Panthurs Scores a critical hit!(42)
[Sun Nov 25 02:34:26 2001] Zilo Scores a critical hit!(23)
(On P99 we aren’t capitalizing ‘scores’ and we have a space after the exclamation point):
[Wed Feb 08 19:58:59 2017] Tormaax scores a critical hit! (52)
[Wed Feb 08 19:59:03 2017] Bardoc scores a critical hit! (69)
[Wed Feb 08 19:59:03 2017] Bardoc scores a critical hit! (37)
The immersion cometh...

Parser is near complete, still a lot of manual sifting but able to start bulk comparing files. A few more tweaks and she'll be purring.
Discovered that we should not be receiving 'lost experience' messages, and when we lose a level it should not welcome us to that level or inform us that we lost a level.
P99 logs:
[Sat Jul 23 09:45:06 2016] You have been slain by a burning guardian!
[Sat Jul 23 09:45:06 2016] You have lost experience.
[Sat Jul 23 09:45:06 2016] Welcome to level 57!
[Sat Jul 23 09:45:06 2016] You LOST a level! You are now level 57!
I didn't see those messages in the in era logs. In combing through Mccoy log files I found confirmation.
Earned EXP to get to level 25 initially:
[Sun Nov 11 23:29:19 2001] You gain party experience!!
[Sun Nov 11 23:29:19 2001] You have gained a level! Welcome to level 25!
Death that deleveled him 9 minutes later:
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:15 2001] You tell your party, 'shite'
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:15 2001] Kuguk slashes charbone skeleton for 61 points of damage.
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:16 2001] Charbone skeleton bashes YOU for 1 point of damage.
[Sun Nov 11 23:38:16 2001] You have been slain by charbone skeleton!

He shows up in a search being level 24 shortly after death:

Noticing some merchant messages are off on P99 vs. Classic, thank you ghetto parser!
From Qien Log in era:
Welcome to my shop message:
[Sat Nov 10 23:18:26 2001] Merchant Ueaas says 'Welcome to my shop Gnubin, you would probably find a Small Cloth Wristband handy'
P99's same message:
a brownie merchant says 'Welcome to my shop, Wedar. You would probably find a Belt Pouch handy.'
Note there should be no comma after shop, a comma should be after player name along with following letter lowercase, and no period at the end of the sentence.
Greetings message:
[Sat Nov 10 23:13:10 2001] Merchant Kwein says 'Greetings Kaeian you look like you could use a Small Cloth Wristband'
P99's same message:
a brownie merchant says 'Greetings, Wedar. You look like you could use a Pixie Wing.'
similar issue to welcome message, but no comma after player name
Hello there message:
[Sun Nov 11 00:55:16 2001] Key Master says 'Hello there Leded, how about a nice Key of Swords?'
P99's same message:
a brownie merchant says 'Hello there, Wedar. How about a nice Pixie Wing?'
The Hi there message is the only one that is correct:
[Sun Nov 11 14:24:32 2001] Terblyn Zelbus says 'Hi there Qien, just browsing? Have you seen the Spell: Translocate: Great Divide I just got in?'
a brownie merchant says 'Hi there Wedar, just browsing? Have you seen the Spell: Clarify Mana I just got in?'

Another message is the drinking of alcohol. The message you receive when you drink a beverage yourself is correct, but when you see others drink alcohol you get a wrong message.
I forgot to mention that after running a larger parse I saw some correct messages for alcohol drinking later in my P99 log file (such as minotaur home brew). So not sure if you guys fixed that already or if there is just some clean up to verify all the alcohol gives a consistent 'swig' message.

Another potential find, from Qien logs:
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:05 2002] Sadaasy regards you indifferently -- You could probably win this fight.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:09 2002] Sadaasy shouts, '14lvl druid lfg. plz send tells'
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:11 2002] Zorach says out of character, 'he'll be easy to pull, don't worry'
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:12 2002] You forget Cobalt Scar Gate.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:12 2002] Beginning to memorize Manaskin...
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:13 2002] Felnema waves at Cinamini.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:14 2002] You have finished memorizing Manaskin.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:17 2002] Your spell is too powerful for your intended target.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:17 2002] Your spell is too powerful for your intended target.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:18 2002] Felnema begins to cast a spell.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:21 2002] Your spell is too powerful for your intended target.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:22 2002] Cinamini experiences a quickening.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:24 2002] You begin casting Manaskin.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:26 2002] Cinamini beams a smile at Felnema.
[Thu Jan 24 19:30:29 2002] Your skin gleams with an incandescent glow.
I found it odd that a wizard was getting this message for spell casting restriction. I wrote a little sub program to see what he had memorized at the time. I went up to his last death (where we know all his spell gems were cleared). Every time he finished memorizing a spell I added it to the list, every time he forgot a spell I removed it from the list. I see he had this memorized:
Atol’s Spectral Shackles
Draught of Fire
Gate
Harvest
Lure of Frost
Manaskin
Paralyzing Earth
Rend
Manaskin being the only 51+ Level spell that is a buff. Even though it is self-only, for whatever reason, the level restriction check occurs first and then prevents casting. If you look at his log record, he previously targeted and conned a level 14 druid shortly before casting.
I don't have a high enough character with this type of self-buff to test, so not sure if it is working correctly. I did forum search and found this:
https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=115164&highlight=your+spell+is+too+powerful+for+the+inten ded+target
In the thread OP mentions the restriction message only occurs when targeting a corpse, which seems to imply it doesn't happen when targeting players (improper behavior).
I'm sure its not major priority, and the logs are very early Luclin that just show this, but I find it unlikely the behavior changed post Velious.
Not sure when it was, but I remember incidents like this. The check for level was done on your target even for self-only spells. I'd have to either target myself or clear my target in order to cast. Qien wasn't 50+ until well into Velious, possibly Luclin, so I'm not sure if it existed in Kunark era.

That spell was self-only. I am kind of on the fence about whether or not other self only buffs had similar restrictions.
For example, there are a ton of examples in your Qien file of this:
Qien logs:
[Sun Nov 11 00:35:57 2001] Your spell did not take hold.
[Sun Nov 11 00:35:58 2001] You begin casting Chill Sight.
[Sun Nov 11 00:35:58 2001] Your Sorcerer's Wristband begins to glow.
[Sun Nov 11 00:36:01 2001] Wisterian says out of character, 'I am ready'
[Sun Nov 11 00:36:01 2001] Your eyes tingle.
The spell not taking hold is extremely common before you click your Sorcerer's Wristband, making me think self-only clickies required manual self targeting. However, it does give me pause to conclude that as you also owned JBoots and its possible you just had a habit of applying insta-click jboots then Chill Sight immediately after. If you had SoW on you may get the 'Your spell did not take hold.' message from the JBoots.
Do you happen to remember anything like that?
Otherwise I'd need to make another little program to figure out which buffs you had on at the time, but there are so many SPDAT messages it would be a ton of work.
I did notice that you never received any 'Your spell did not take hold.' messages when casting Improved Visibility or Shield of the Magi, which could be by chance, but I doubt it.
If I'm in Cobalt Scar then that was definitely the sequence of events. After each med session between quads I'd click jboots, then the wristband, to ensure that they didn't time out during my next quad. I had the hotkeys right next to each other. You'll probably next see a bunch of "target out of range" messages or "a wyvern looks uncomfortable" from me mashing the flux staff hotkey. After each quad I'd run back to that big rock near SS zone (CS was pretty empty when I was there so the spot was usually open) and I'd harvest and go afk.
Non-interesting trivia - Qien's jboots were looted from Drelzna so he never had to deal with the AC quest line.

All the resist messages I see mention the spell name:
[Mon Nov 12 18:42:20 2001] You resist the EarthElementalAttack spell!!
Keep in mind the only logs I have from mcoy have very late velious info (after the final patch occurred).
Perhaps it was as you say back in the day, but would need to be confirmed via other log files or classic screenshots.
Yeah, unfortunately I didn't learn about adding the logging option to the ini file until towards the end. If I could get some of my old drives to work I probably have a few logs on those when I remembered to manually do "/log on" but short of going to a data recovery place it's not likely for those to turn up.

I'm still sad that no one's mentioned anything about "Hit by non-melee for 12 damage" (iirc) which is the most classic message.
