Rock, Metal, Classic Rock, Death Metal, Tenacious D, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Opeth, Otep, Techno, some DJ's, some Pop, I dislike most rap, even though my girlfriend made me watch Notorious BIG. Metallica, Iron Maiden, Metalocalypse, Velvet Acid Christ, Godsmack, Korn, Disturbed, System of a Down... eh. just to name a few ;)

My taste is generally in the electronic and dance realm. Detroit Techno and Chicago House are the foundations of what I prefer to listen too.

Why yes, I do have taste in music. Pretty good taste at that. Stranger the better, imo.

isitatomic tells the group, 'Hold on to your butts, INC a list of sheer awesomeness!"

*Ros Serey Sothear and Sinn Sisamouth (Amazing Cambodian rock musicians that disappeared without a trace at the outset of the Khmer Rouge regime)

*Nobunny, The Sonics, The Black Eyed Snakes, Reigning Sound (US garage punk at it's best)

*The Carter Family, Hank Williams (Nuf said)

*Selda Same (Turkish psych like you'd never believe)

*Tan Dun (Heavily experimental but still mainstream contemporary Chinese classical composer)

*Steve Reich & Arvo Pärt (Minimalism, hurray!)

*Bone Thugs, Kool Keith & all associated stage names, Big Pun, Prefuse 73, Quasimoto, Digable Planets (Hips and hops of all sorts)

*Hasil fucking Adkins & Moondog (One man bands ftw)

*Erik Satie, Dmitri Schostakovich, Kryztof Penderecki (Requisite European classical bases now covered)

*Captain Beefheart, the Residents (a squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast n' bulbous, got me?)

*Morgan Geist, Matthew Herbert (House... preferably from left field)

*William Basinski, Harold Budd, Akira Rabelais (Tape loops 'n ambient)

*Django Reinhardt, Sun Ra, Thelonious Sphere Monk, Rahsaan Roland Kirk (Jazz doesn't get much better than this)

*Soil & "PIMP" Sessions (Unless it's Japanese DEATH JAZZ!!)

*Retch, Dahmer, Gorguts (DEATH METAL!!!)

*Pilgrim Travelers, The Alphabetical Four, Thomas Dorsey (Gospel the lord doth totally fucking approve of)

*Torturing Nurse, Keiji Haino, Maja Ratkje (Noise and unleashed voice from China, Japan, and Norway respectively)

*Vladimir Vysotsky, Pjotr Leschenko (MOTHER RUSSIA!!)

*Lightnin' Hopkins, Booker White, Snooks Eaglin, Memphis Minnie, Ma Rainey (Top bluesmen and women)

*Carolina Chocolate Drops, Roscoe Holcomb, Bruce Molsky (Mmm, old-time revivalists who know what they're doing)

*Folkways, Rounders, and other great field recorded folk music compilations, especially Negro Work Songs and Calls with the railroad working songs. Damn.

* Lucille Bogan and EVERYONE on that compilation called "Copulatin' Blues". Holy shit, this stuff was recorded, low fidelity scratchiness and all, in the 30s and they were singing songs that began:

I got nipples on my titties,
big as the end of my thumb,
I got somethin' between my legs'll
make a dead man come,
Oh daddy, baby won't you shave 'em dry?
:eek::eek::eek:

And I suppose I will end this list with that.

I'm surprised you didn't list Gogol Bordello.

Fuck, wait... I didn't list Emir Kusturica. Oh well.

Right now it has been mostly Dubstep and old ska/reggae from the 60's 70's. There is a good show on WKCR(Columbia University radio station) From 6am-10am every saturday morning, really some choice cuts played.

I did listen to a lot of rock but nothing new has really been interesting to me, dream theater was the last band I was really listening to but I don't really like their newer stuff. Favorite musicians are Les Claypool, Mike Portnoy, Neil Pert, Zappa, John Lydon and too many others to name right now.

Dude whatEVER.. Forces of Victory is easily in the top 20 most innovative and rocking songs of all time. Alcohol is the best love song I have ever heard.

Some of their shit kind of sucks, but honestly, they are great musicians and inventive songwriters for sure.

isitatomic
04-09-2010, 07:16 PM
They are a hell of a lot of fun, sure, and I was really quite into them many years ago.

But...

Alcohol is the best love song I have ever heard.

This isn't in F&R so I'll keep it civil: There are *so* many other songs out there with more soul, more sexiness, more gut-wrenching loneliness, more whimsical glee than that. That you'd even indirectly almost quasi-insinuate that Otis Redding love songs are inferior compared to Gogol Bordello gets a /boggle from me.

And as for this:
Forces of Victory is easily in the top 20 most innovative and rocking songs of all time

Double boggle. Plastic People of the Universe tho? Hasil Adkins tho? Captured by Robots tho? Virtually all Krautrock tho? Metalmachinemusik tho? Link Wray tho?

I hope you have Soulseek. Let's share, k?

Hasbinbad
04-09-2010, 07:26 PM
Link Wray is a name I haven't heard anyone outside of my RL musician circle ever use, lol. For my money, Rumble is the best instrumental ever written. All hail to the electric fucking guitar.

Seriously tho, Forces of Victory is bad ass.

isitatomic
04-09-2010, 07:38 PM
Well shit, then I have to wonder what you have against Ain't That Lovin' You, Baby? Great fucking love song!

But yeah, songs like Rumble and Green Onions are those awesome instrumentals you wish would be your slo-mo smoking badass entrance music wherever you go.

I still have to disagree though, even in high school I thought the most rockin good song was either Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues by McLusky or Zen and the Art of Breaking Everything in This Room by World Inferno Friendship Society. The first one I will still swear by:

From his current band's myspace..
"Chris and The RaveUps co-founding member and drummer John Cuniberti played together for a number of years in the early 70’s with Berkeley rockers The Rockets that included a young Eddie Mahoney (Eddie Money)."

I can def. see myself listening to Sylvia in the near future. Good stuff. And Lauryn Hill is class.

Spongebob and Plankton - FUN song. Makes me laugh everytime I listen to it.

But I'm mainly a big classic rock guy, anything by Led Zeppelin is fantastic, Pink Floyd is amazing. Just wondering though, anyone out there ever hear the song Little Wing? Love this version:

Really high on John Butler Trio lately... Seen him a few times but was really cool seeing him solo at Rothbury last year.

It's amazing to me that one guitarist can make this sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZd3BQgFpo8

Anytime Led Zeppelin comes up in a music conversation I feel obligated to throw Blind Willie Johnson's name out there. I listened to plenty of Zeppelin growing up, and personally felt kinda taken for a ride the first time I heard Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcHfWkwXjng&feature=related). Physical Graffiti - 1975, Blind Willie Johnson - 19fucking20s!! The members themselves were intimately familiar with their blues roots, and it's so incredibly peculiar how so many fans either don't like or simply don't know of that inspirational material.

Honestly, musical structures =/= entertaining music. Most people listen to music for entertainment. Musical appreciation is what you're talking about, and that is generally reserved for musicians themselves or people who give a shit.

I personally am a musician who gives a shit, and I agree that everything in modern music hearkens back to African tribal drum riffs.

However, musicians mostly make music as a job, and as most consumers are 12 year old girls, the evolution of pop. It's kind of like artistic Idiocracy.

I could start writing a tome in response to this having been engaged academically/personally/socially with the topic, though not so appropriate here. I'll do my best to simply and briefly disagree (hah).

Here:

"Music as career" has indeed, loosely and generally speaking, always been the case historically, though along with the other arts it was pretty much a practice driven by more primary factors, say, you were born into it (gypsies, castes, etc). Performance is tied to social role, spirituality, etc. Accumulated wealth was consequential. That dynamic still exists in some respects, most akin to forms of folk music.

This, however, is where it gets more complicated. Folk music in that sense cannot be consumed (key word of yours btw) by an audience of any considerable size, so... yep, you have to record it. The paradox: accessibility, variety, exposure and the like increase; while the ability to package and distribute (and we all know that commodification leads to alienation!) goes up as well.

Now your evolution of pop takes the stage (lawl). Without audio recording and the creation/marketing of genres, pop music doesn't exist. A few things first though - Most consumers are definitely not 12 year old girls, BUT kids ARE the most impressionable audience. The receipt from each box of Fruit Loops and Jonas Brothers album is nestled inside a parent's wallet, so yeah there is a special focus on them. That's kind of beside the point though, as marketers have crafted oodles of terms and price-tags for EVERYONE and EVERYTHING imaginable. Chalking up the creation of popular music to teenagers driving tendentiously paycheck-seeking musicians is a bit of a dead end, especially given that "teenagers" didn't even exist until marketing execs created them. It also ignores cases like the inception of punk, or even the entire underground music scene of a nation like China, where seeking wide distribution (or "selling out") is not only faux pas, it's not even a viable job option because the "market hasn't yet matured." There is no paycheck to seek.

There's that saying, "You can't call yourself a musician/actor/artist until you get PAID to do it." I can't prove it, but I'd bet all of my jaw harps on the argument that this gained currency *after* the marketing of recorded media.

Most people listen to music for entertainment. Musical appreciation is what you're talking about, and that is generally reserved for musicians themselves or people who give a shit.

Absolutely, but the whole radical and disproportionate division between populations of appreciators and entertainment-seekers came about for the reasons mentioned above. Reifying a dichotomy that registers as flaming BS to us is counterintuitive!

Well, don't get me wrong, there are millions of amateur musicians in every country of the world who do it for the love. However, I was referring more to those bands who get exposure to a broader crowd. 99% of those people are in it for the biz.
The interwebz is doing a good job at forcing change to the model. More amateurs are now able to get their music out. They've always been able to, but the record corps have been forcing them out of the game for some decades now. Something had to give, eh?
Now your evolution of pop takes the stage (lawl). Without audio recording and the creation/marketing of genres, pop music doesn't exist.

Bullshit. Go look at any reliable source of demographics for who consumes the most albums. Go look at what bands sell the most records across the world. It's all teeny bop bullshit dude. I have some education in this subject, and I can definitely assure you that even some of the "harder" bands out there cater their music to a teeny-bop audience.
BUT kids ARE the most impressionable audience. The receipt from each box of Fruit Loops and Jonas Brothers album is nestled inside a parent's wallet, so yeah there is a special focus on them. Regardless of where they came from, the result is the same. Propaganda-laden advertisements loosely couched as music, aimed at opening mommies purse.
It also ignores cases like the inception of punk, or even the entire underground music scene of a nation like China, where seeking wide distribution (or "selling out") is not only faux pas, it's not even a viable job option because the "market hasn't yet matured."
For sure there have been some great underground artists that have made it in spite of the system, such as The Offspring. Taking that example one step further however, you can listen to their music pre-label and post-label and clearly see that they started making records for young girls. Young girls rule the world dude. Daddy spoils them, their boyfriends spoil them, etc. I can't believe I even need to argue this, it's like you're ignoring a pink elephant in the room with us and talking about the weather.
There is no paycheck to seek.
There is always a paycheck dude. Even if it's not in front of you. I'm not trying to discount amateurs who do it for the love, please don't get me wrong. ..but people in China know who NSync is, and I guarantee you that for every underground band coming out with dope shit on their own, there are a dozen chinese boy bands who are trying to use the same model to get ahead in life.

I really like this idea, but people I talk to and things that I've read generally signal the exact opposite. Means that have cropped up throughout the supernetz for exposing your musical talents (or lack thereof) to the world are, as I understand it, to be avoided like the plague. Putting your ballads up on Myspace Music or some such is an awesome way to be totally ignored. The incentive to hit the road and craft a unique performance has gone up quite a bit. *shrug*

Wha? If you're saying pop music is very old, I'd say you're making a no-no that my Asian Civilization prof would go nuts over: Projecting into history. Pop music didn't exist until something was actually called "Pop music". Patronage is something more akin the National Endowment for the Arts, which in fact is probably more likely to fund Alvin Lucien making music using a long wire suspended inside of a cathedral than it is to fund John Mayer's new hit single.

Bullshit. Go look at any reliable source of demographics for who consumes the most albums. Go look at what bands sell the most records across the world. It's all teeny bop bullshit dude. Going to have to counter-bullshit this bullshit. Maybe you looked at the Billboard ratings and noticed that within the last decade the groups for tweens have started to claim the charts. That's not the entire picture, though:

consumers over 45 accounted for 25% of music sales last year, more than twice the share of any other age group, and up from 15% a decade ago. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2006/nov/28/usa.musicnews)

three-quarters of digital music buyers are age 25 and older (http://paidcontent.org/article/419-the-music-industrys-demographics-problem/)

..but people in China know who NSync is, and I guarantee you that for every underground band coming out with dope shit on their own, there are a dozen chinese boy bands who are trying to use the same model to get ahead in life.

The last part is certainly true, but nobody really knows who NSync is. Imported media comes in through a miniscule heavily regulated tube. Backstreet Boys from the US and Westlife from Europe. There are guys in their twenties who have totally legit (fully heterosexual) love for both of those groups, I shit you not.

Disagree. See: patron of the arts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patronage

I see what you mean this time, but being a patron just meant you were a sort of paid political mouthpiece for a specific elite audience, it didn't mean that everyone else played for free (though some surely did). It's similar but different in at least one major aspect: patron artists sold out for an elite audience, while pop artists sell out for the masses. Flip flop!

I like this paragraph the most, maybe I just wasn't concise enough. Limiting folks to two groups sounds like one of them "false dichotomies", and however many groups you can think up I don't believe they are mutually exclusive, even if it appears so today more than ever.

Yeah.. Did you know that seventy three percent of all statistics are made up on the spot 93% of the time?
This trend started really with the Beatles, and really hasn't stopped since. All you have to do is examine the path of musical evolution to see the truth in that, but if you google REEEEEEAAAALLY hard, you can find out I'm on target that way too.

Eh, it's not an either or, it was 2 examples. ..and I've studied enough about "classical" and "folk" (not woody guthrie, but like irish folk music or gypsy music), to know that there is a HUGE difference in where they were coming from in both making and performing music, and the differences in the audiences. tme to stirr up some hate!

Everyone I know either listens to very underground rock (from experimental to the billions of cores to the metals), classic rock, rap, or folk and as consequence hate my music. most of what i listen to are "gold and platinum" bands that most fans of previously stated genres i think judge to quickly because they are "radio" bands. But as with anything if you listen to their new and old, popular and non popular tracks you see the rabbit hole is more than what the sunlight will show. the list:

Muse, Cake, RHCP, Incubus, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, Gnarls Barkley, Audioslave, The Toadies, Foo Fighters, The Mars Volta, The Offspring, Sublime, Tool, The Roots, (various solo projects from mostly guitarrists/bassists of these bands), Squarepusher, 311, Stone Temple Pilots (really their non radio/not so generic songs), Of course your default classic rock bands (zep, who, floyd, beatles, etc.) Dreamtheater in small doses mostly mid/early, and other stuff like that.

you're welcome to flame on!

I know when something is put in a box and sold to me but these bands are actually so good they can sell millions of albums without being told what riffs and lyrics to produce...they just use labels for mass marketing. which i cant blame them. I like money and id like people to hear my music even more. and if that takes cheesy photoshoots, t-shirts, and coffee mugs hell yeah. as long as its your art.

but i also see the whole counter culture idea as an even cheaper way of being culturefied. I see more people with mowhawks, tall Ts/sideways hats, and crazy cut hair with random blonde spots, and large sunglasses than anything as it is. kinda makes me wonder.

not flaming about anyones lifestyle. sayin as i see it.

those people are silly geese and need to chill when it comes to music. I think the only bands I actually can not tolerate are ones that promote hate, racism, and sexism. some people just like to define themselves by their music, so typically anything outside their normal sphere of listening they treat with mild hostility.

I can p much get along with anyone musically. So long as they don't force me to listen to Pearl Jam or bands that sound like Pearl Jam it's okay. I had a roommate in the late 90s who would literally play pearl jam and stp like 8+ hours straight with nothing else in between. I was never a huge fan but after this even the few songs I thought were okay by these bands I now hate.

I am super lazy when it comes to organizing my music and currently have about 22k songs on a single playlist on random on winamp. It's so bad who knows what could be playing at any given moment lol every few days I will hear a song come up that I swear I have never heard before.

I've always associated weirdness with this song... It was somehow hardwired into my little person brain in the same spot as the movie Labyrinth, and I only knew it as "the goblin song" until I revisited it later in life.

This man could play the guitar!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iJ7bs4mTUY&feature=related

Notice how he does 98% of his fret work with only his index and middle finger!

Cut from Wikipedia At the age of 18, Reinhardt was injured in a fire that ravaged the caravan he shared with Florine "Bella" Mayer, his first wife.[4] They were very poor, and to supplement their income Bella made imitation flowers out of celluloid and paper. Consequently, their home was full of this highly flammable material. Returning from a performance late one night, Reinhardt apparently knocked over a candle on his way to bed. While his family and neighbors were quick to pull him to safety, he received first- and second-degree burns over half his body. His right leg was paralyzed and the third and fourth fingers of his left hand were badly burned. Doctors believed that he would never play guitar again and intended to amputate one of his legs.[5] Reinhardt refused to have the surgery and left the hospital after a short time; he was able to walk within a year with the aid of a cane.
His brother Joseph Reinhardt, an accomplished guitarist himself, bought Django a new guitar. With rehabilitation and practice he relearned his craft in a completely new way, even as his third and fourth fingers remained partially paralyzed. He played all of his guitar solos with only two fingers, and used the two injured digits only for chord work.

I thought I already mentioned Joy Division...

J/K but seriously though, most indie rock today is either ripping off Joy Division or Siouxsie & the Banshees.

My wife listens to most of that stuff, not that I don't enjoy some of it.

The basics include:
Pixies, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Muse, Metric, etc... the usual.
Is that what you wanted to hear? Not even sure where I would place Gorillaz...
