View Full Version : Non-twink monk gear?

Messing around on a non-twinked human monk. Level 12 right now and my fists are the best weapons I have! Should I be fine punching things for now or are there any early game items that are must haves?
Sashes/headbands from the quests seem pretty terrible tbh. Rather have 1 ac over 1 stam, doesn't even give me 1 hp yet.

I can't find a good h2h chart anymore, this is all I could come up with: http://web.archive.org/web/20080625073129/http://forums.monkly-business.net/index.php?pageid=abilities

At level 12 your fists are 6/36

To me, the best weapons if u have a low budget are 2 Jade mace (around 600pp each), or Wu's Quivering Staff (2 handers for 100pp if u can't afford maces).

Then, u'll need a haste item. The cheapest one is Silver Chitin Hand Wraps (around 1000pp).

Other good cheap items are Azure sleeves, Feathered leggings and Tar goo strands (around 50pp each).

But if I were you, I'd focus on weapons, then haste item. The rest of the gear is not that important at low level (besides a fungi of course but it costs like 44000pp...).

Good luck !!

Master wu's trance stick is a pretty good monk weapon, and because CoM is camped basically all the time you can usually find these for sale for a pretty low price, 50-100pp or so. I also think they look pretty cool, its a translucent staff graphic.

1. Weapons: Wu's trance stick / wu's quivering (at lvl 20+) are incredibly great starter weaps for <100p.

2. Haste: SCHW for 1k pp

3. HP / AC: You can solo a lot with monk, but that also means taking hits. HP/AC rings are your best friend since they reduce the damage you take AND make mend more efficient by increasing the amount of HP it heals (its always 25% when it works).

4. Magic booties: Get at least mesh boots (from uguk frogs) for magic kicking. Or spend 25-50p and get some magic boots from EC with a few stats.

Thanks for the chart, there's one on the P99 wiki Monk page.

I was looking more for items that I could go around and grab myself, like I said I'm not twinking this character. So pretty much just classic leveling stuff. For example, I might try and get a Scepter of Rahotep as its got a better ratio than my H2H and drops off a level 16. Seems like I'll be punching things in my cloth clothing for a while longer!

Ya that's what I figured you want to get your own weps:
https://wiki.project1999.com/Hulking_Spiked_Club

This guy is lvl 16 in SK

https://wiki.project1999.com/Iksar_Berserker_Club

Can drop off a lvl 14 in Kurns

Then, you'll want a full set of mesh armor from Uguk... best monk items in classic

Around lvl 20-30, you could try your luck with Odus quests.. kerra isle and stonbrunt have decent stuff for being old school quests.

The Swiftclaw Sash (http://wiki.project1999.com/Heretic_Heads) is probably the earliest worn haste you can get in game.

The Click snare (http://wiki.project1999.com/Miranda%27s_Dice) is also an incredibly great monk tool.

Mesh seems like a good goal, I currently have a few pieces of woven as I was briefly in Guk before deciding I wasn't ready. Someone mentioned mesh boots for kicking, but I can't find them on the wiki?

The berserker club seems pretty awesome, might be worth going to Kunark for... But the spiked club seems good enough for now.

That was me, I may have been thinking of mesh hands and not feet. Good news is, around lvl 20 theres lots of newbie magic booties dropping around the world, from perma to sol a to kunark.

This (http://wiki.project1999.com/Pit_Fighter_Anklewraps) is another good example of an odus piece if you want dem magic booties (lvl 12)

http://wiki.project1999.com/Shiny_Silk_Gloves drop off a level 12 spider in LFaydark. Making your hands magic is a pretty big deal at that level and the +5 hp are a bonus. Likewise, in the same vein, if you haven't gotten the earrings and rings from Qeynos Catacombs, those are an easy pickup and an addition 20hp total.

Silk Armor and Raw Silk Armor are fairly easy to tradeskill, the trick is farming the silks. You can level and farm silks in NRo off the spiders there until like level 17.

At around level 21, you can safely solo the Pit Fighters in Warrens to get yourself some magic feet which are also pretty critical for a monk. There's also a magic 1hb you can pick up there, http://wiki.project1999.com/Ye_Auld_Ball_Peen_Hammer but it's pretty lousy for the level compared to your fists. It is useful to skill up 1hb though.

Do a little baking, it's cheap to do and you can get some +stat foods right away, plus it's novel and fun. Bear meats give you +str, Wolves get you +Sta.

If you group in Crushbone you can get yourself some Bracers of Battle and a Prayer Cloth of Tunare. Free some High Elf Male Slaves there and you can quest some +2 Str Rings.

Once you have magic fists, you can farm wisps and make a lot of plat from the Research Aid quest in NK and use the plat to skill up blacksmithing to make Javelins, which will make life a lot better for you.

You can farm Shralok Packs in a level or two in Kithicor, which are a big deal for a monk too.

At around level 18, you can get a http://wiki.project1999.com/Iksar_Berserker_Club from Kurn's, but it's kind of a pain in the butt to get there and back. Definitely worth it though as it's the best non-twink weapon you can get for quite a while after that.

That's about all I can think of for things around that level. There's a bit more you can do once you get to your 20's and 30's. Good luck!

Great post! I think I'll hit the sewers for that jewelry. I didn't know that having magic gloves would make my fists magic, so now I'm lamenting that I didn't happen to find a pair of woven gloves.

Right now I'm in Qeynos so getting spider silk will have to wait, but these are some good leads. Thanks!

There are no such thing as netted/woven/mesh boots. The rest of the set is solid though.

Fill your visible slots (except chest) with bristlesilk from cabilis; it has monk texture to make you look better geared than you really are.

Crystalline silk is cheap in absence of anything better, often vendor purchasable from thurgadin. People will let you take crystalline silk for free from velks. Most people passing through thurgadin are trades killers and will do the combine for free. Similar AC to mesh but also +Mr. Sadly not magic.
