hm.. If i remember correctly.. The pet is comes out for a few seconds and attacks either whatever attacks you or what you have targetted? Then goes away after a few seconds. I remember it only being useful if it successfully bashed the mob that got a surprise on ya so you could gain some distance. This was years ago so i could be wrong :) Kind of like that cleric hammer pet

Flaming Sword of Xuzl is a conjuration spell.
As a wizard, you can summon 3 things :
- A halo of light (which you never summons)
- An eye of zomm / talon (which you also never summons)
- A Flaming Sword of Xuzl (which you just got).
In short, your conjuration skill is around 10 and you need it to be around 200 to successfully cast Flaming Sword of Xuzl without fizzling as much. Get ready to summon tons of eye of zomms or halos to raise conjuration skill if you want to use Flaming sword without losing too much mana.
Regarding other questions, can't use it to track since you need to have a NPC targeted and in range to cast this spell.

Summon eyes to proc over there hammer. Also use eye to pull KOS while medding.
Eye also works as a place able target for your rains and other targeted AOE.

I don't know if this spell is broke or not classic or something but either way I think we should leave it alone. It has the best spell description on the wiki:
Conjures a flaming sword that attacks your target until either it, or the target, is dead. Sounds impressive, but when you consider the fact that the flaming sword has 1 hp you begin to realize how much this spell sucks. Sword does 22 damage max per round and somehow is an aggro magnet. Don't expect to get much out of this 700 mana sinkhole.

this reminded me of what a disappointed, jaded wizard I was in the end of my live run

This spell actually had a use on live; if a mob killed something in one round then it wouldn't call assist to its friends.
Guaranteed single pull.

Flaming Sword of Disappointment.
Flaming Sword of Verant hadn't balanced classes well yet.
