So... reading through a few of the epic quest guides got me wondering... how did people ever figure out how to obtain these without these guides? They seem so indepth!

Lots of community cooperation and time.

Tons of hailing, key word trial and error, and killing everything. All the big class boards had massive threads dedicated to researching their epic. So you had 1000s of players running around the game and then posting their findings.

Epics were some of the easier ones to figure out since people just had to track down what new NPCs and drops were added to the game. It's the existing ones that were damn impossible.

Go read up on the lore behind the Soulfire quest. They also had to change Fiery Avenger because not a single person could even find the start to the quest.

Haha, maybe that's why it's one of the easier ones to complete :D

There are still quests that haven't been solved....i do remember on ragefire server a patch or something where there was a classic or kunark quest that was finally solved...16 years later

I remember when epics were released on Live back in the late 90's that most Devs gave away hints, clues and guides on how to achieve the epics and quests...

The number of unsolved quests in EQ stands at about 50%.

Nah, I don't think so. where did you get that info?
There are plenty of unsolvable ones, but I think 99% of the solvable ones have been solved.

According to EQ Dev Prathun there are no legacy quests left in the game that have been unsolved

Seems like it's been a myth all these years that some remain unsolved :(

I actually asked an old EQ dev (a dude that was there since the very beginning, if not before the very beginning) about this 4 years ago before a twitch stream, and he told me that while there are unfinished quests, there were no unsolved or undiscovered quests.

so, while its always possible for someone to make a mistake or be wrong, safe money is on that not being a thing unless it was added years after classic - velious

That’s such a bummer. There was always such charm and mystery around the idea that there are quests that no one has figured out.

I always felt the bars and taverns in the game could of been useful for this. Let the tavern Npcs reveal little clues to unsolved mysteries over time. Would be interesting to have part of the game be sitting in bars and you never know what you’re gonna hear.

For one thing, people have looked at "quest" items that have no quests associated, and inferred that numerous unsolved quests must exist.

But what people don't realize is, the EQ quest DB is filled with crap (eg. quests made by novice questmakers as practice that were never meant to be real), and the EQ engine flags items as being quest items based on that DB, without distinguishing which quests actually exist.
