New (Returning) player coming to P99

Hey all. I played on Povar from 1999-2003 or there abouts. Decided to try p99 out of nostalgia and really liking it so far.

I'm a level 14 Half Elf Ranger and just started camping for bandit sashes in West Karana.

I've got about 100 plat saved up. What would you suggest I buy? Armor or weapons?

Currently using a mix of ring/banded/leather I found on various vendors, and a bastard sword.

I'd shoot for some decent weapons first.

You can get some decent weapons for cheap, like Green Jade Broadsword, etc.

Save up for a haste item asap as well. The cheapest being Silver Chitin Hand Wraps. I think they're around 1.5k now?

You can buy a Silver Swiftblade for 100p, or a Springwood Stave for 200p, both good value weapons that will last a while.


I've got a 35 Ranger that has some cheap EC weapons and I primarily use the Silver Swiftblade because it out dps's the one handers I have (Green Jade Broadsword, Springwood Club, Some kind of 10/22 proccing dagger).



But yeah, prioritize weapons, then go for some cheap armor. 5/55 rings are good value and can be passed to an alt when you upgrade them or resold for what you paid. Haste will be nice when you get to 35+, and definitely something you should keep in mind and save for as you level, but for now, better damage/delay ratio weapons will be more cost effective than haste.


I also quested Swiftclaw Sash, but I wouldn't recommend it, since it took quite a long time and it would have been easier just to farm plat to buy SCHW, a better item anyway.

Congrats and welcome to the server! Another weapon would probably be my next priority, and after that I'd save up for some 55 hp rings. Those will run you about 250 a piece.

I've also got some stuff I've been handing out to new or returning players that you're more than welcome to. I've got a list going on my magelo if you're interested. Just try to pay it forward in the future if you can, after the items have outgrown their use to you.

Honestly, West Karana and North Karana are great at level 19 to make money - camp bandits in WK and hunt down Will-o-Wisps for their Greater Lightstones (see this quest for why: https://wiki.project1999.com/Research_Aid) in NK, and you can make a couple thousand in not too much time at all. HHK goblins will be better than spiders if you can get a group

High Keep is real close by. I'd check if there are any goblin groups because you could start there now and make a ton of money and exp and right now with the exp bonus going on its a perfect time. It would be a what, 225% exp bonus? Plus cash from loot and ears.

They probably had some greedy, leeching level 36 in their group.

The exp falls off at about 35 but some people will try to stay for the cash.

You could stay at Crags until you ding 26, but I would definitely check again once you do.

I promise it's worth it, I always make sure to camp there from 25-35 on my alts.

Finally! Sold all my silk which allowed me to pick up one 5 AC +55 HP ring, and some Ry`Gorr Chain Leggings to replace my leather ones :D

If you save up a little more plat you can get Mithril Vambraces for around 400 -- those will last you a long time. I too love this thread.

You could be getting tremendous exp in both upper guk (up to level 30ish) and solusek A (up to lvl 40 and even higher if you are willing to kill gnomes) right now. Sol A even has a vendor for sneak classes and, just outside, a druid port with vendor for non sneak classes.

I made 28 yesterday solo'ing Woolly Mammoths in Everfrost. I was also able to upgrade my leather cloak to a Polar Bear Cloak while in the area.

After selling all the tusks I now have about 450 plat saved up. I really need an upgrade over my ringmail sleeves.

Not much progress leveling today, but I spent a lot of time doing gold exchanges and selling items for an Iksar Necro in Everfrost. He tipped very nicely. (Thanks Walum!)

Made 30 today! So glad to have SoW, Strength of Earth and Stinging Swarm. I also noticed I am doing higher damage which makes life easier :)

I now have about 930 plat saved up from farming Mammoth Tusks. Thinking a haste belt might be a good item next to replace my Split Paw Hide Belt. Maybe a Swiftclaw Sash since I can't afford an FBSS for quite a while.

Exp is crawling at 30, even though I am fighting the same blues. Might try to stay here until 31, if I can hold out.

Lastly, I am really, really tired of Tundra Jack killing my mobs when they are rooted and below 20%. I might have to come back some day and slap him around...

Keep grinding; haste belt is ~2.5-3k. You can get silver chitin hand wraps for half that, with 1% more haste than an FBSS.

Made 31 hunting mammoths, but time to move on. Half of them are green now.

But while I was in the area, I hunted down a werewolf and the ghoul messenger in West Karana. I used the werewolf pelt to upgrade my back slot to a Werewolf Hide Cloak after tracking down Karg Icebear. I also used the strategic map of kithikor and turned it in to Morin just because it was a fun Ranger quest with a nice but unused reward :)

Upon visiting EC tunnel, I was able to get a SCHW for 1k plat. I also upgraded my blood stained tunic to a brigandine tunic.

I now have about 250 plat left over to start saving for my next upgrade. I probably should replace my Ringmail Neck and Split Paw Hide Belt.

How are you on bags? For starting out on the cheap, I recommend filling your bank with caster research boxes. They are 10 slots and only 10pp each (like Lexicon, Elemental Grimoire, etc.)

For casters and monks starting out I recommend the bags you get by turning in greater lightstones. They are only 6 slots but only weight 0.4 lbs each instead of 3lbs for regular backpacks. That's 20+ less pounds to lug around which is huge for monks and very helpful for casters with low strength.

For your inventory later on you can make or buy handmade (10 slot) backpacks for 60pp each. They are 1lb less than the research boxes but 6x as expensive.

You'll want one container that holds giant items, the cheapest are the 1pp large sewing kits you can get in the NRO Inn (Spoolee Gee I think his name is). When money isn't as tight, you can get a Shralok Pack (8 slots, 25% weight reduction & holds giant items) for 100pp.

I didn't see anything about a bow. You can get a runed oak bow (21/43 125 range) for 100pp. With Velious out, there are a ton more tradeable bow choices up to the 32/36 Exquisite Velium Reinforced Bow for 9-12k.

I was using Large Sewing Kits (bought outside Halas for about a plat, 8 slots, holds giant sized items), but at 3.0 wt each they were a bit much. Now with this information I have switched over and I am using these bags instead. The sewing kits are now in my bank vault, where they will remain useful. Many thanks for this information!

I had a little time to shop last night and picked up the following:

Granite Bracer - replaced Blackened Alloy Bracer
Spider Fur Collar - replaced Ringmail Neckguard

Overall I gained a small amount of AC, but 14 STR, 7 STA and some HP too. Now the only piece I want to upgrade before I continue adventuring is my Split Paw Hide Belt.

I also learned the hard way that even with SoW I could not outrun A Shadowed Man. They are incredibly fast.

Minor update:

I went from barely into 35 to a good chunk into 37 this weekend. I spent the entire time in Mistmoore at the castle entrance.

35 was a drag. I can't believe how slow it was. Glad it's over.

However, I found most of my time at Mistmoore CE as both the puller and tank. I was able to really understand and make good use of Harmony for the first time, combined with snare it made pulling very easy. I received numerous compliments about how smooth and steady my pulls were :D

I am hoping to spend some more time at MM this week. I've got about 1100 plat saved up and wondering if I should be looking for new weapons.

PS - Sirken made a guest appearance to my group during my time at Mistmoore CE. First time I've seen him.

I was able to make 39 this weekend in a great Mistmoore castle group. Super happy to get my new spells, including Healing, See Invis and Levitate.

I also raised my fletching up to 135. Sadly, I failed on my combine for my Trueshot bow, and don't think I am going to do all the footwork over again any time soon.

Couple of questions:

1. Is Call of Sky worth the trek to get? I'm not even sure how to get to where it is sold at but if it worth it I will make time.

2. Where is good to group at 39? What's the next progression past Mistmoore?

Call of Sky is a great little attack proc, however I avoided using it if I wasn't tanking in a group as it draws aggro.

I would stay in Mistmoore until 40 and then head to City of Mist.

Since City of Mist is outdoor, you really excel as a puller here. You can go up all the way past 50 in this zone.

Adventured into Kunark for my first time and what an experience it was. I ended up in a Dreadlands group killing Yetis. The zones seem massive compared to Norath and loaded with agro monsters.

I ended up getting half way through 40. This level seems really slow again. Going to head to City of Mist next.

Wiki prices are likely to be a bit inflated. I've read / heard its the best ranger weapon pre-epic (I don't know this for a fact, though....may wanna ask around).

Being a fresh, casual player...you might be able to swindle yourself a deal for 3k.

You can sell it after you get your epic, too.


edit: According to Troxx: For the average ranger who isn’t absolutely loaded or a raid twink, the weapon answer is Woodsman staff until swiftwind and then jade mace + swiftwind until primary epic is achieved.

Well, haven't played as much as I'd like but I did get a Pyzin kill in QH and got a Glowing Black Stone.

I was able to sell that and get a Phase Spider Carapace to replace my Brigandine Tunic. Also replaced my Werewolf Hide Cloak with a Tiger Raptor Cloak. And lastly, got my Call of Sky spell.

No exp, but productive none the less :D

This weekend I went from 43 to 45 (20% into) in some CoM groups. It was good to play again.
