As far as shaman pets go it’s a big improvement. Much more sturdy and higher level helps it’s damage output goes up quite a lot compared to previous pet. If you have a mage resummon item chaining for anmax pet is easy. With one of these reclaim items you can also think of your pet as an emergency extra mana tank that can be tapped into on demand. So yeah ... it’s well worth it.

-Fully buffed with haste it’s a nice extra 20dps you contribute while doing other shaman business
-Sturdy enough to tank should you need it
-with mage reclaim ... just think of him like a mana investment, can always reclaim his steep mana cost instantly for on demand mana

Most definitely.

Level is the most important stat in EQ and the few additional levels from the 55 pet make a significant difference in damage output (despite the max hit staying nearly the same) and pet survivability.
