New to P99 looking to make some friends

Hello everyone! I'm going to be starting P99 tonight for the first time. I played very little EQ back in 2000/01 but never really got into it. I had a friend who's entire life was EQ back in high school, now I feel like I missed out on one of the greatest MMO experiences video games has had to offer. I tried getting into EQ live, but the game is filled with boxers and there are so many servers the population seems really thinned out. I'm wanting to experience the game as it was in its prime and make some friends along the way. I have extensive experience with WoW and have made some lifelong friends in that raid scene, hopefully, P99 can do the same. Any recommendations for casual/social guilds?

There are a bunch of guilds. You can read about them on the guild discussion section of this forum or look at the list on the wiki - http://wiki.project1999.com/Guilds:Guild_List (some guilds might not have updated this in a while).

I personally would encourage you to get into the game, group with other low level players and make friends before jumping into a guild. Don't be shy in game /tell others around your level and try to form groups. I think guild choices will evolve more naturally later on as you level and make friends. I understand many prefer to get into a guild right away though, so up to you.

Take advantage of the wiki. EQ doesn't offer much in the way of in game guidance, so I think you will find class guides, newbie guides, zone maps etc on the wiki extremely valuable as a player fairly new to EQ.

It's definitely close to what it was like back in 1999-2001. Everything is there except the original stone UI that took up 90% of the screen.

As far as joining a casual/social guild - I'd probably recommend 'Kittens Who Say Meow'. Nice people that don't take themselves too seriously, yet they successfully raid consistently.

Try not to compare the game with anything modern. She's old, but she's still beautiful. Learning its quirks may take some time and patience, but you'll learn to love the wrinkles on her face....do I want to fuck classic Everquest??

Anyway, for a first time player I would recommend to constantly have the wiki up while you play (wiki.project1999.com (http://wiki.project1999.com)) and probably make a druid. They get a bit of everything, including teleports. So you can make some money and twink another character in case you find some other class you enjoy more.

Yup - if nothing else, p99 does the no-boxing thing right. Makes it a lot more enjoyable.

If I were starting new, I would join a leveling guild. Make friends, maybe even get a somewhat persistent group. Would give you the flexibility to go off the beaten path and do some leveling in some of the less crowded places.

Just remember, leveling in EQ takes patience. Especially your first time -- it is slow. But you end up meeting people and hopefully making some friends along the way.

As for what class to play - whatever you want. You really can't go wrong. I'd say casters tend to be a bit easier since you can bind and gate, plus they generally see less of a boost from gear than melee classes do.

For EverQuest my biggest suggestion is pick a class based on your play style not on emotion or it's theme.

Unlike newer MMO's EverQuest doesn't give a crap about classes being well rounded or balanced. This isn't to say that some classes are trash and don't have a place, but depending on your goals or playstyle some classes might as well be trash to you

It's good advice. While you'll always be welcome to groups as a cleric, enchanter or bard... they're 3 very different classes and as a former cleric I know I burnt out before I hit 60 - just struggle to enjoy grouping for hours staring at health bars and my mana bar while sitting down :p

I believe this sums up the beauty of the game.

Even today, it still has this incredible palatable feeling of nostalgia, old dreams and correct amount of frustration and sense of accomplishment more modern mmos lack.

It is so raw and unpolished in some parts, that imperfection is indeed one of its main attractive qualities. :)

I just looooooove this game, and P99 gives you the best of it by getting as close to perfection as possible, hope OP can find here a good place to call home and enjoy this aged vintage selection.

I'm not new to EQ (have a high level druid) although I did take a 3 year hiatus and just returned.

Anyways my son has a lower level monk that I would like to help level up for him. Not sure what level you are now but let me know and perhaps we can group up sometime.

What is the general time that you play? I have 6 kids (lol, I know).. so play time is whenever I'm not busy with them (usually at sleeping times PST)
