As I wait for my IP Exemption, I figure I would post in the forums.
I am a brand new Everquest player. My husband has been playing since the game came out, when I was just a mere 10 years old and couldn't convince my parents to buy me Everquest.
His mother has been playing Everquest just as long, and claims to be a legendary Enchanter.
Then there's me. My first MMO was World of Warcraft, that I got to play on my big brother's account when he wasn't logged in. I have been playing all sorts of video games since I was 5 years old!
I want to play with my husband on this (he went through the painstaking objective of installing it on my upper echelon gaming PC when I was at work) because I see the passion and nostalgic flare in his eyes.
I plan to make a Gnome Cleric (my husband managed to shut me down on playing an Ogre Shaman, even though I am still sad about it, because an ugly race like that just doesn't exist in these prettied up MMOs anymore :)
Any tips and tricks I need to know right away? Any fun, simple ways that I can secretly "grief" my husband when I first start playing?

Thats a downright heartwarming story xD
Sadly I have no ideas about how to troll your husband. Or ogre him, or even gnome him.
But pre-emptive welcome to you, I hope you enjoy yourself! ...also sometimes the worst of the community are vocal on the forums, but I don't see that in game nearly as much myself. So don't be disheartened by the occasional terrible posts like "My theory about why feminism is irrelevant now" .. the nice people are in game in higher numbers than here on the forums.

He may already be aware, but as a truly new player some things I recommend doing are updating a few settings to get started.
When you get into the game, the UI is fully movable like windows on your computer, most importantly though is this big "EQ" button. You can click that to get a menu and select Options.
In here, in one of the tabs, there is a "Max FPS" slider--set this to 60, the game is old and wonky and long story short the game just feels super weird if this isn't set to 60 (your mouse steering is heinously slow, for instance).
Past that, there are various chat settings you can enable in that options menu to show certain things--personally I enjoy seeing my own misses and misses at me so that I know about how often something attacks.
On the main page of the Options menu, there's a Load UI button, I highly recommend either DuxaUI or VertUI, as they're much more modern and helpful than the Titanium UI.

If you want ugly, consider a female troll character... my enchanter switches into troll form when a groupmate decides to be overly flirty :)

A female Dwarf is one of the ugliest characters available and they can be Clerics! No better way to grief him than make him stare at one of those any time he's playing with you. Also I talked to your husband a few weeks back, I was going to help him out with a couple random starter pieces but I haven't heard from him in a while.
Anyways Welcome and hope you guys have a blast

Hi everyone! Thank you for the kind words and tips. :p
I will make sure to adjust my UI when I login and start going.

He said he switched to a Shaman named Ragabash so if you were looking for him on his bard, he switched over.

Welcome! Pick what you truely want it is a long journey to 60 (expect 2 to 3 months at least with daily play) It can be done faster but only with lots of power leveling from bards. So if your not happy with what you make and level it up it's a long journey to correct it

Ah I really like this bit of advice! ;)
Nothing like leveling a class everyone tells you "will get better eventually" that you do not enjoy to lose interest.
I believe at this stage , personally , that the journey and not the destination is usually what truly fulfils you, specially on something like Everquest.
One of the many things I have always enjoyed about this game is how endless it is when you look at it from a certain perspective.
Like many moments in life, it ends up being a nice receptacle for good moments shared with those amazing but rare PUGs and the fun convos you get with others around the game.
Again, this is what I believe personally, it obviously is very wildly different for others, but Everquest, oh man, this game is flawless in that regard.

When I see new people like you, full of hope and childlike delight, it makes me happy. Please pretend that raiding does not exist here and remain a newbie forever. Peter Pan style, but in Norrath.

Haha luckily my dad was huge into computer gaming when EverQuest came out, I was 9 years old, and I only got to play at his house every other weekend. I couldn't WAIT to go to his house and play. In fact, my first computer that I could play EQ on had a black and white monitor. That's right. I played EQ with a black and white monitor for something like 3-4 months!
Anywho, do NOT worry about what the end game raid scene is like. You will be more than capable of completing your epic.
I'm not really an MMO guy, i played WoW casually.. i'm more of a FPS/Moba type person.. however EverQuest (p99) is probably the most rewarding game I have ever played. Most of that comes from the interactions you have with other players on a constant basis. Most other MMO's nowadays is like playing a Single player game with a bunch of bots that do not speak to each other.
Enjoy the ride! Let me know if yall need help with anything!

:o Aww ty!
I just try to enjoy the game, have fun and just try to explore it with wonderment after all this time, because right now it really makes me happy.
I will follow your advice and just avoid anything bad even when I make it to the endgame here, if not I give you permission to berate me here and ingame! :p
Big hugz to you Pope Hat!
Have a wonderful time in and out of game!
Cheers!
Knowing what I know about the game, if I had that knowledge and had a husband who told me to not play an Ogre shaman I wanted I would be divorcing them right then and there.
Not only was it the class I wanted its one of the most badass characters that can be created.

My first experience with another player besides my husband.
Gnome zone
"Hey do you want to group"
"Sure!"
"Where are you at"
"Gnome starting zone by kobolds"
"My wife just came home with Taco Bell, be back in 5 to 15 minutes"
Taco Bell must have given him some serious bathroom time, because this person never came back to group with us. Remulo, if you are out there, I'm still waiting to group with you. LOL :)

So far it has been pretty fun. But too many people are super like "let's get in a group and just go absolutely wild" and then people die.
I was attracted to Everquest because I thought it was a slow paced game, where leveling up, you do it really carefully and considerately.
70% of people I meet are nuts and just jump in regardless if anyone is ready. And the thing I saw about Bards being weird is true!
Will anyone play with me that is real chill with nice easy slow pulls?

At low levels there is often very little penalty for death in EQ, and at this point 4/5 new characters you will meet have been twinked at least to some degree. This adds up to people going hog wild at low levels, it will slow down a lot once you must travel farther/into more dangerous places. Many players try to blast through the early levels to get to about 20ish when classes start to gain better skills.
There will be a time in the future (about level 30) when you will wish you could steamroll mobs again like this so enjoy it now. Use this experience as practice to handle big pulls because even when you are going slow and deliberately, accidents can and will happen.

You're a cleric, offer to lull pull and dictate the tempo!

I understand the twinked gear and so forth but I guess my husband talked up about how chill everyone was and how it's more calculated so when people pull like it's damn current World of Warcraft, I get disappointed.
I may have to learn to pull. My fear is not knowing what spawns anywhere. Old players will go "herpa Dee how did you not know that Bob the legendary gnoll of doom spawns there you idiot. Now we wiped" lol

You'll get the fast tempo people from time to time. The silver lining is that they're usually twinked, know what they're doing, or have their main nearby to buff and rez. So the exp flies by.
Not every group is like that though. I was in a chilled out group last night where we just took our time. This game is the only one that allows me to drink beer with a bunch of strangers on Discord.
You also won't be expected to pull unless you're a Monk, Ranger, or a tank. If I don't know how to pull a zone/dungeon, I tell my group that. It's anecdotal, but I've never had someone make fun of me for that. Almost always someone jumps up and shows me the pulling method for the camp.

It was somewhat of a joke tho; you probably shouldn't be pulling on a Cleric ;) your husband can pull with the mage depending on camps. Otherwise it's how you chat and leadership. As a Cleric if you say "oom next pull you die" that should slow things down.. however some monks will just continue pulling and FD watching you die.. if possible get a puller that dies well, like a ranger or a Bard, they listen better? ^^

As a Cleric if you say "oom next pull you die" that should slow things down.
This is a good point.
As a new Cleric, you're probably not used to calling out your mana pool. Which is understandable, especially if you're used to playing games where other players can clearly see your mana pool.
However, classic EQ is an old grandpa and if your mana gets below like 50% you should let your group know. It allows the puller to slow down or stop pulling entirely and rest.
If you have a steady and comfortable group, the puller will get tunnel vision and pull non-stop until the Cleric tells the group "20m" (20% mana).
And what the Cleric says, goes. You give the group life and you can certainly take it away. Clerics are like frustrated and angry black moms. You don't want to be on their bad side.
