View Full Version : Enchanter Epic - Any Advice?

Hi all,

So I've decided its high time I start my enchanter epic.

The wiki seems to be a pretty solid guide. I have zero experience doing any epic quests in any form (live, p99, etc) whatsoever.

Second Piece of Staff -- Test of Enlightenment
[ ] Kill Cazel in Oasis to get a Spoon
[ ] Pick up the The One Key in the Overthere.
[ ] Pick up the Lost Scroll in Dalnir.
[ ] Pick up the Book of Charm and Sacrifice in Plane of Sky.
[ ] Combine the Spoon, the One Key, the Lost Scroll and the Book of Charm and Sacrifice in an Enchanter's Sack.
[ ] Give the combined sack to Mizzle Gepple (Clockwork VIIX) in Ak'Anon to get the Second Piece of Staff.

Third Piece of Staff -- Test of Charm
[ ] Obtain the four dull gems from Nadia Starfeast in Firiona Vie.
[ ] Charm a Spectral librarian in Kaesora. Give him the Dull Diamond to get the Enchanted Diamond.
[ ] Upon turn in an aggro Enraged spectral librarian will spawn. It is strongly recommended not to kill this see page for details.
[ ] Charm Felia Goldenwing in Skyfire. Give her the Dull Sapphire to get the Enchanted Sapphire.
[ ] Charm the Wraith of Jaxion in the City of Mist. Give him the Dull Ruby to get the Enchanted Ruby.
[ ] Charm Impaler Tzilug in the Overthere. Give him the Dull Emerald to get the Enchanted Emerald.
[ ] Combine the Enchanted Diamond, Enchanted Sapphire, Enchanted Ruby and Enchanted Emerald in an Enchanters Sack.
[ ] Give the combined sack to Nadia Starfeast in Firiona Vie to get the Third Piece of Staff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but both the 2nd and 3rd piece seem pretty do-able solo / with 1-2 friends.

For the first piece:

- I'll be able to do chardok royals with my guild...so Prince head will come eventually.

- Vessel / Varina ...what is the best way to go about getting these 2 done? Park a lowly alt somewhere near their spawn points and check them at random times and beg/plead for your guild to come help kill them if they're up?

For the fourth piece:

This seems like a massive cock-block. I have the Essence of a Vampire from Hate. I'll be relying on my guild to get lucky with a Fear clear on the Wraith of a Shissir.

Is Ghost of Kindle (The Hole) as easy as it seems based on the wiki? I should be able to do this with a couple friends, right?

How tough is The Tangrin (Field of Bone)? Any advice / required numbers / where to check if he's up?

Any insight, tips, etc are greatly appreciated. This quest seems like a massive pain in the booty but I want to get the 2nd and 3rd piece done and then further motivate myself to finish it.

Yes the first two pieces of the staff are soloable. Although might need A friend to take down Cazel.

The ghost of kindle is soloable. The hard part is getting to him. It’s much easier if you haven’t ruined your Hole faction. Your animation can take him down after he’s slowed. The ghosts around him do not assist.

The tangrin is soloable. You can charm a guard and send it at him. Or train a guard over him and kill steal it at the end.

The Wraith if Shissar is tough, but you can follow a guild up after CT spawns and ask to loot. Sometimes it rots. Alternatively you’ll need about 5-10 people to help pull and kill him.

Vessel and Verina are the real cockblocks. I won’t sugar coat it, camping these two can take weeks and was the worst experience I ever had in EQ. Many people leave a level one there to check them constantly. Although some very competitive people actually sit there main character there and stare at the spawn point. You will need 3-5 people normally, unless you have puppet strings and very good luck with charm breaks.

Tangrin is easy and you will often find him up. Duo-able for sure with a healer and melee (at 60).

Prince in Chardok is the easiest of the royals. Don’t stress about that.

As mentioned Verina and Vessel are the bottlenecks. By far. But if you do find them up the unless you’re a badass soloer with loads of clickies like wand of allure, reaper and soulfire I’d be hesitant about trying solo either as a chanter.

Don’t want to discourage you at all but I would personally not ask for any help with other parts before having these two crossed off.

Vessel, in my experience, is significantly easier to find up than VT. Maybe it's changed now but I've probably seen Vessel up a dozen times on P99 and I basically never pass through cabilis. But I've only seen a few VTs even though I have an alt at her spawn and have regularly pass through to buy a coffin or hate stones or whatever over the years.

Any of the fights outside of the planes are trivial with a few pals, and mostly doable solo (especially if you have clicky backups). VT and Vessel can be solid too if you must try to pull it off in a hurry, but if you wipe you probably won't get a 2nd chance before someone else gets the kill! Vessel especially went down pretty easy the time or two I've fought him. VT is nastier cause of cleric spells... Mana drains or push or even rapturing her to interrupt a CH may be necessary without help. Without multiple charm breaks (you better junk buff incase of dispels since you cant stun), or a bunch of slow resists ooming you, they're not especially difficult kills.

Verina's spawn point is obvious per the wiki.

Vessel not so much...I'm gonna make a level 1 iksar to park there...how do I get to his spot?

Triiz

For Felia, it's soloable but infinitely easier if you invis and stand on the spawn point for the cycle (-3608, 960 by a big rock near the zonewall) and have a bard chain Highsun mobs in the graveyard area until the right PH lands on the spawn point.

Killing the mobs isn't hard, but just randomly killing mobs hoping to get the right PH could take a while before you get the cycle started. It's been a while but I think the respawn for the cycle is 30 seconds or 1 min.

Although I don’t have evidence that is also my impression. Created a lvl 1 ikky warrior and went to check a few months ago and he was just up and I got him even though it took my friends about 15-20 mins to get there. Verina on the contrary I get the impression dies much faster and will often have several active trackers present.

Wand of allure, a reaper, maybe even corpse an extra one, and a mana sieve wand will make Verina fairly comfortable to solo.

If you can engage her solo AND have preparked then you have an excellent chance. Got her for my friend’s chanter last year. Had camped my factioned torp shammy there as it was the last few days of the month and we were due one quake. Happened to be playing (on another char) when the quake happened and immediately logged on Shaman and phoned friend. When Verina popped (took a few mins) I malo’d and slowed her and pulled her to ent. It took a few mins for the first chanter to show up. No clue if he would have had the means to solo her or if it would have taken longer for his crew to get there.

Yeah, if you're spending that much already then you might as well throw -mr gear and nice aggro weapons on your pet.

Are soulfire clicks paladin-only these days?

But yeah, I assume that the bigger issue than soloing her successfully is being the first to engage her.

FTE isn't bad if your preparked/bound. Few people might attempt to pull it unprepared, but that just makes it easier. Usually 1-2 people will wipe on it before a few guildies show up to help. I prepared enchanter wanting to solo has the best chance, imo.

I don’t think agro weapons will be the most helpful. Lifetap and/or proccing weapons for more DPS to end the encounter sooner or regen the pet is probably best. Extra agro isn’t going to help when charm breaks...

But I’m spitballing. I haven’t even seriously considered the camp yet.

In my Experience for Vessel it is sufficient to have fast reacting friends/guildies. Attended 3 or 4 kills so far in which only a tracker was preparked. In 2 or 3 of those kills others showed up after we engaged or killed Vessel, so was kind of close.

Verina you need "something" that can FTE asap and survive until kill force shows up. I parked my shaman there and tanked it until guildies arrived who were close. If I had Torpor I could have solod Verina I guess.

She’s soloable with torpor for sure. She will go oom before 40% so cheals won’t be an issue. She nukes for around 650-700 and hits for around 180-220 from memory. Not easy but definitely doable.

Your level 50 pet won't land lifetaps on a level 60 mob, let alone other procs. Hell, a level 50 pet hardly lands ykesha procs on level 52-53 mobs. But aggro from procs happens even if they resist, I believe, so I figure the aggro weapons can't hurt, they might let you avoid needing to mem blur after an early charm break+wand recharm.

I did the epic a year ago or so and spent a couple months tracking both Verina and Vessel.

Leave rushing to them on quake / server reboot to people who don't know better. You're a chanter, use your brain. Both mobs are casters and will start casting their buffs immediately upon popping.

Set up a Gmail account if you don't have one already. Add it to your mobile phone. Find the most annoying and loud ringtone you can find on the internet and set it as the notification sound for emails which have a subject starting with 'POP:' (Gmail allows that, find a guide somewhere).

Park a level 1 character near the spawn spot and set a GINA trigger (or a 1-line shell script if you run Linux / MacOS and have half a brain) to watch your EQ log file for "<mob of interest> begins to cast a spell" and send you an email when this happens. The email's subject must begin with 'POP:'

Make sure the whole chain works by testing it on common caster mobs somewhere.
Now just log on your tracking mule near Verina or Vessel (doesn't have to be LoS - casting message can be "heard" through walls) whenever you don't play your real characters, and wait to be notified of the mob popping.

This guide works for any caster mob really. I got both Verina and Vessel with minimal effort this way.

From my experience, both Verina and Vessel will be highly contested when they pop. You really have only few minutes to engage the mob. But since with my method, tracking them is so easy, you can afford losing a few spawns to competition and get it when you get it.

That sounds like a very solid method. Though you don’t need to min/max at EQ like this to get them. In my experience tracking method matters less (with Verina anyway) than your ability to FTE her FAST and survive until she’s down or your friends have shown up.

Minimizing time commitment can be important to people who value their time highly or have little to spare, but still want to maintain a link with the P99 biotope.

Camping verina was by far the most neckbeard thing I ever did in my whole life.

4.5 days into window , she popped at 5am.

Would screenshare to my phone anytime I wasn't watching , and had people take shifts while I was school / work just in case.

But by golly I got my book

Am I ashamed? Yes
Am I glad I commited and only had to do it once? Yes

Ask your friends to park a toon to help you if possible, that was key for me. Literally any 55+ toon will be a big help

Yeah. VT was the one time I did something for more than like 6-7 hours straight in EQ. IIRC my family was out of town for the weekend, and a few pals from The A-Team sat online in her room with me towards the end of a window doing trivia and taking turns being passed out until she popped and we texted each other and killed her. Fortunately I think we only spent about 24 hours on vigil.

In terms of encounters, it IS easy. The only multi-group content is Fear and Hate. There are no contested God or Dragon kills. The most contested parts are solo-able with good luck and/or good clickies. It’s just two incredibly long spawn windows that no reasonable person can sit through consecutively. I applaud those that have, but there is a reason 10 chanters all race to neriak after an earthquake. You’re more likely to get lucky in that circumstance and have someone that beat you to it wipe on a bad charm break.

I killed Tangrin at around 7:40 EST this morning so there is your timer. I solo'd it, and it wasn't hard at all but charm didn't break. If charm breaks, you're probably going to want Wand of Allure/Puppet Strings/really high MR to avoid the 12 second stun.

Trooper Taer with VOG/boon tore his ass up and had like 50% HP at the end of fight. The fight took ~5ish mins tho so I was pretty lucky on charm not breaking since after the fight Trooper Taer resisted mez and broke fetter after about 30 seconds so he has extremely high MR for a level 50.

Man, this is some disheartening conversation.

Yeah, I'll probably never finish the epic. I started a long long time ago and have 90% of it, but I'll slit my wrists before I sock VT or VD or even sit there afk for days with GINA on. Just hoping to get lucky and happen to be in Neriak/Cab during an earthquake one day I guess, heh.

There is some evidence that VT and VD can drop two wards/Rods... but it’s all out of era. There are even patch notes indicating they will only drop 1 set, but it’s all circa 2003. Might be worth digging. There is also some anecdotal evidence that it’s a smaller window. I am all in favor of trying to make the window smaller if someone can provide real evidence on the window. The only evidence I’ve seen that the window is 5 days (which is a bigger window than anything else in the game, I think) is the Diku write-up which Nilbong relied on in the spawn timer post.

Put level 1 alts at their spawns to watch for them now and then. Maybe you'll get lucky. But I wouldn't bet on it :-/

On the plus side you can say/ooc/emote/whatever "Verina Tomb begins to cast a spell." to trigger the gtt/Gina of all the worthless fucks who are trying to get the kill before you whenever you log on your level 1s. I know I do!

Yeah I tried this when I first started working on the epic. After a couple weeks of checking I said fuck it.

I figure eventually I'll get lucky and stumble into VT/VD or I'll just cast VOG forever. Clicky haste would be nice I'm sure, but it'd have to be something borderline game breaking, like clicky Boltran's, to really motivate me to dedicate the time to VT/VD.

It's funny. I think I got my epic on live at some point during the end of velious. At that point I just strolled into Neriak and Cabalis and found both mobs up.

So in terms of how the game was on live back when epic 1.0s were still relevant I really think it was one of the easier ones... I frankly remember worrying much more about getting the head from the prince in Chardok and the drop from PoHate because those were raid targets. Verina and Vessel were bumps on the road that could be duo'd or 1-grouped at worst.

I think that's because the progression (an expansion per year) meant there just weren't THAT many encs. People weren't playing more than their one main character mostly and didn't have several 60s at that point because there was always the next expansion's bottleneck key quest to do (ST, VT and so on) to worry about and sink your time into on your one main character.

Here everyone eventually figures out that the ENC is just very overpowered and a lot of fun AND cheap to gear out comparatively speaking. And we have infinite time to play with and no more expansions coming out. And so the two bumps on the road become huge stumbling blocks due to their incredibly long windows and a somewhat steady (if inevitably decreasing) flow of competition.

Dont give up. These are all soloable (except maybe wraith of shissir). You might need a few clickies (soulfire and wand of allure) but it is definitely soloable.

I have soloed Verina Tomb, Vessel, and Tangrin. If you're serious about soloing Vessel and Verina you'll need to keep your enchanter bound at their spawn points.

Wraith of shissir may be soloable if you can get into PoF after it has been cleared, you have Shissir timer, you camp near her spawn point inside firewall, and get lucky... maybe? Would be insanely risky though.

If you get vessel and verina everything else will come eventually. Shissar is only a problem if you are not in a guild that frequents Fear. There are plenty of guilds that compete for the golems and dracholich. Eventually you will be there after a CT pop. I see shissar going to alts / not being killed right away when guilds go for the raid targets in there.

I would have loved to have solo’d v&v, I presume clickies like wand of allure and cheal stuff would be needed?

I did have to use a reaper (cheal) clicky for vessel and verina. However, if luck is on your side you wouldnt need it for verina since she is slowable. You just have to mana drain the crap out of her and hope you land slow early.

Triiz

I'm sure VD and VT are both soloable with clickies, but if I were to ever go the socking their window route I wouldn't try soloing them without Puppet Strings. Between regular charm breaks and them chain dispelling, especially VT because Mana Sieving her will cause her to cast more dispells, it seems like the chance of charm breaking more than the 3 charges a Wand of Allure has is relatively high. You may get lucky and charm not break or be dispelled at all, or you might not.

If you just happen to be in Neriak/Cab and see them up then sure by all means try to solo them with what you have, but I can't imagine the feeling of crushing defeat after you waste multiple days or a week of your life and charm breaks 4 times instead of 3 so you die and some random guy gets VT at 10% HP and kills her while you loot your corpse.

This happened to me my first VT attempt. Awakened got the VT when I wiped (they were on raid suspension at the time) a few years ago. It is heart breaking, but I was learning how to get her myself.

In response to the dispel mechanic... I've killed her 4 times now, and she never casted a single dispel in any of those fights, but I havent killed her in over 2 years. So unless they changed her dispel casting mechanic, I think its safe to assume that if she does dispel its RARE (especially after mana draining her).

Also, it's not as big of a time sink as you may think as long as you commit to it in the manner I did.
I kept my enchanter bound at Verina and kept a tracker there as well. I'd pop in every once in a while late at night when the server pop was relatively low. I'd also keep note of when she was in window. I did it in a more leisure style and I've seen her pop quite a few times. So its not as insanely difficult as people make it out to be as long as it is done properly...

That being said it did take me about 40 days to get mine of checking in at the camp at late night times and tracking her windows. I'm not the only enchanter who has killed her in this manner either. I learned it from others.

So unless they changed her dispel casting mechanic, I think its safe to assume that if she does dispel its RARE (especially after mana draining her).

I've never killed her personally so I can't say from my own experience, but I've seen 3 or 4 videos of her being killed on P99 and in all of them she cast dispel multiple times. I suppose if you were able to sieve her to 0 mana she wouldn't dispel, but Nullify Magic is only 50 mana so she'd have to be completely OOM not LOM.

There are old threads from early/mid 2015 about a change to how often all caster mobs cast dispell and people were complaining about it, that's more than 2 years ago though.

Killed her a few weeks ago. We were two shamans duo’ing her so it was slow going. She cast dispel 2-3 times fwiw

Its not that bad if you have a lot of patience.
Make a level 1 char and park it at spawnpoint and check it everytime you log on and log off.

It will probably take months, but one day you will be lucky. Its good to have some friends/guildies on standby though.

Worked for me.

Bracer of hidden and keep see invis on your pet. After mez drops when you charm pet, the top buff slot will be open. With your pet already being tashed, the likelihood of a partial resist and dispelling charm is less.

Also a tactic used for WW dragons and stuff like the golems with aoe dispell.

Fwiw, Lava Breath/Frost Breath that WW dragons/Terror casts is only 1 slot dispel. I assume as a 60 cleric she probably casts Annul or Nullify Magic which are both 2 slot dispels. On Live in this era she probably cast the level 14 Cancel Magic which is only 1 slot dispel, but p99 casters seem to always use their best spells or close to it, like 51 necro's casting E-bolt.

Kind of got into doing epic and then keep feeling the crushing press of a VT/Vessel camp.

I would say don't give up. But don't get obsessed with having epic before 60 or something like that. Create a lvl 1 alt and park there and then just check in every now and again when logging on to play.

I'd tell any aspiring enchanter who wants his/her epic to not even start the rest of it until you have VT/Vessel. It just builds up false hope.

Yeah good call - might just do that with an alt. Not sure I'm gonna GINA it though.
