Rangers nowadays?

How are rangers nowadays? My brother and I want to make a duo and I want to play a ranger. A lot of stuff I see on the forums say the ranger can’t tank, terrible dps, all that jazz. What are your opinions and what would be good possible duos?

Yeah, rangers are pretty unimpressive. If you want to play melee, I recommend monk + shaman or warrior + shaman.

Enchanter + priest class is quite strong--particularly enchanter + cleric. It requires charming if you're up for it

the higher you get, the worse off you will be on a ranger. Your tanking ability, dps, etc, all starts sucking the closer you get to 50. Basically become a 3rd rate rogue/monk for damage and a 4th rate warrior for tanking.

So you turned down one of P99's least popular classes (Ranger) in favor of one of the more popular classes (Bard) and ... the only class that's even close to as unpopular as Ranger?

I mean don't get me wrong, I think all classes have advantages and the unpopular ones get too little credit. I just think it's funny that you turned-down Ranger to play Wizard.

I'm not playing the wizard, my brother is. I was going to play a ranger but after hearing the cons of them i decided not to. I checked out the duo chart and it shows wizard is a good combo with a bard, so that's why he's playing the wizard. He doesnt care what class he's playing.

Rangers also get one of the best buffs in the game, call of the predator, which salvages some of their value. Anyways, bards are busy but tons of fun and enjoyable. I haven’t played wizard, but I am sure porting and insane burst dps are great.

Youll have more fun playing a class you want to play. I play bard and I love it mostly bc I just enjoy the fact I can run fast as hell!! I also love the utility I offer groups. But they are busy, youll be constantly clicking so get ready for that.

Yeah, I play a bard on live and this duo is just for fun with my brother. I’ve been maining a shaman here. I just think it’ll be fun to grab a swarm and aoe then down together with a wizard. Plus free ports

Most important? Rangers are fun as hell to play. If you want to play a powerhouse class it is not going to fit that bill. If you don’t suck it’s a very capable class.

Ranger is awesome and fun. This server is full of nubs who are incredibly far removed from the spirit of classic EQ, nevermind the spirit of an emulated server that won't see another expansion. Play what you want to play and enjoy the game.

If you’re still playing any class combination after 54 well then God help you.

Wizard/Bard is not a typical duo IMO but I can see how the quad style of leveling would be very good with this combo.

Bard and wiz have lots of options. Bard can just mez mobs while wizard nukes (no chance for root break or taking aggro). Or fear kite it while nuke. Or take aggro on 4 mobs and let wiz just stand and ae nuke (just make sure to lay in like 5+ selo's chains on each mob first). Or just straight up bard ae kite until like 50% and wizard AE them down.

Plus the mana regen.

Also ghetto swarm kiting (REAL swarm kiting with charm), where bard can mez a bunch of mobs together in a pile and wizard roots them all, then bard charms one and makes it attack group. Since charm aggro doesnt work right on p99 and actual swarm kiting isnt possible.

PlY what you want. If you want to play a Ranger, look for the good in them, and play one.

If you want to be the best DPS or tank in end-game raids, ya don't play a Ranger because that's not what they are designed to be.

However if you want to be an indispensable and flexible party member on the "Journey to 60" and have cool utility like Tracking and some spells then I think Rangers are a helluva lot of fun.

It does require you to be an active and engaging player though, you can't sit and med 90% of the time and toss out a heal or nuke or two. But I really, really enjoy chain pulling an outdoor dungeon with a solid XP group. They'll sing your praises if you do it right/well.

Being a Ranger is the most fulfilling class there is! With the right gear you can solo 1-60 or be DPS,Puller, and/or tank in groups!
Now some might say.. WAHHH rangers cant tank!! the ones who might think this are just simple minded :)
Will you be tanking Avatar of War? Prob not. VP mobs? (its been done before) but since there are clicky mallets and stuff theres really no need for it.
In groups you are capable of grabbing and and not losing the aggro during ench/shaman's tashes and malos as well as follow up slows right after.
You're slowers will prefer it!
Well how about their tanking capabilities. Considering if you gear properly, you will have maybe 1k or so less then the "average" tank at lvl 60 that isnt all raid geared out and maybe 100-150 less AC. Sure you will be getting hit harder then war/pali/sks.. But you will be very well capable of doing this. DPS.. You prob wont out dps an epicced 60 rogue at 60.. You will on the otherhand be on par if not better damage then youre average monk ( monk using sceptre of mastery + fist. )

Oh.. + you make the group stronger with your ranger buffs, can clutch heal peeps who somehow aggroed mobs without you realizing it, Oh... and ive tanked king,protector,tola,juggs emp ( all in seb ) without any problem. Leave the raid targets for the fatties tho.

I played a ranger on live and I created him again on p99 because i loved playing them. I dont care that i cant tank all that well or at all, I dont care that dps is and can be an issue. I love the play style with trying to pull and being able to track mobs for my groups. I will get in the middle of the fight and pull out to plunk some arrows in a mob. But hey this is just me.

For anyone who doesn't plan on 60 or raiding, Rangers are a lot of fun and shouldn't be discouraged. You'll have to pay attention more than most other classes, so that's a deal breaker for some. Tons of utility and decent damage, though. A good ranger brings plenty of reasons to have in a group.
