View Full Version : Random crashes when zoning

Title says it all. Whenever I cross a zone line, it seems about 75% of the time the game crashes. I've tried running the client w/o and w/ WinEQ, but it is possible I've used WinEQ wrong.

Anyone else see this issue before?

How fresh is your eq titanium installation? (out of curiosity)
Sometimes zone files become corrupt for seemingly no reason.

I wish I could tell you. I'm not sure. Is there a fix to that without patching or getting a clean install, assuming that's the problem?

The weird thing is all zones seem to have the possibility of crashing me. No one zone in particular is causing issue.

I just came back yesterday and am having this issue as well. I have played on both a fresh install of titanium, and a compilation p99 install I found that already had everything setup except for me having to update the p99 files. Both crashed equally from what I could tell.

I suspect my abnormally long loading times may be related. Whenever I zone, it seems to be doing nothing for a good 10 to 15 seconds, before the loading screen finally comes up and it finishes loading nearly instantly.

I will give your no loading art suggestion a try and hope for the best! =)

There is another thread posted as well, for the same issue. Seems to be a few of us experiencing it. I originally tried clearing cache and a dns flush, with no effect. I've tried on a desktop and a laptop and experienced the same results. I just tethered one of my laptops and it ran perfectly smooth on LTE. It seems to be ISP related.

Orange county CA here. Just curious, are you having issues with loading pages on wiki.project1999.com?

I think the loading art thing did it. Fingers crossed. Thanks much!

Same issue here, random issues loading between zones, random issues loading web pages from p99 domain. Spectrum Internet, North Carolina here.

Same. It must be a Spectrum thing. See if it ever clears up.

I have Spectrum in TX and don't have this issue.

Maybe the hops between NC and where ever P99 is located is the issue. Just starting happening 1-2 days ago so hopefully it will get fixed.

I am not on Spectrum (Windstream here) and am still having this issue. It happens when camping back to char select almost 100% of the time, while zoning is not nearly as often.

I didn't have this problem many years ago, but I only came back 2 days ago and have no way of telling you what changed or when it started. Just that the problem wasn't there when I was playing back before Kunark.

Tonight (Monday) i got disconnected twice but has improved a whole lot from what it was doing. Managed to zone several times and swap characters without disconnect.

I started having this exact issue last Friday (Feb 2). Now my client freezes when I zone about 30% of time. Note that this never happened before and I've been playing for more than 3 months. I also did not make any changes to my EQ client (UI or otherwise), so it makes me feel like it may be server side.

Yeah it started on Feb 2nd for me also. And it seems to only be for people with Spectrum, besides the one guy who said he had windstream.

I should add that the issue now affects ability to enter the game at character selection screen. 2 of 3 times, I have to either kill the game process and retry or wait for time out, which then takes me back to the initial login screen to enter the user name/password.

Having the exact same issue with Spectrum in SoCal. 50/50 whether I crash between zones or even trying to reach character select. Sometimes I can't even see the server list and I get a message telling me I can't connect to the patch server. Also, same as everyone else, it started about a week ago.

Gone back to be really bad tonight (2/6/2018) pretty much all zoning timeout. But its the same with the www.project1999.com website.. hit and miss getting to it.

Problem with getting it resolved is that calling Spectrum technical support won't get us anywhere. You will be asked to reboot your cable modem, your router, even your computer. Then you will be asked to attach your PC directly to the cable modem. None of these troubleshooting steps are going to resolve anything.

The problem appears to be within the Spectrum networking infrastructure which is manged by engineers many levels above the tech support. I am hoping that someone in the P99 community is connected well enough to get this escalated directly.

Thanks for the suggestion Pope Hat. This is however a routing issue and not a software problem. Unfortunately, it's not something we can address on our end. I'm guessing that us P99ers are not the only people experiencing issues with these hops and hopefully it's something that's being addressed. If I have some spare time tonight, I'll give them a call and try to work through the Spectrum support ranks.

For the Spectrum customers, the workaround may be to use a VPN service, for now.

Without VPN, I see timeouts when running traceroute to project1999.com web server (same IP address space as the game server). While I am on VPN, traceroute is clean.

By the way, the potential routing issues seem to exist within the Hurricane Electric's network (Internet Backbone and Colocation Provider).

I will run on VPN tonight and report if I have any issues.

Here is the traceroute output for both scenarios:

Mediacom user in Iowa here. Been hitting this LD/crash wall hard lately.

In the past, it would be every once in awhile. Annoying, but not too bad. Lately, it's been very common, and it's been extremely frustrating.
