Hey,
I used to play EQ back in 1999. My friend just started playing here and gave me his disk so I could play also. He is a Iksar Shaman. I would like to join him but can't decide between SK, War, or Monk. Which one do you think would be good for a newbie? I like the Idea of all 3, though warrior seems least likely choice but who knows. I mainly played a caster back in the day so this is really new territory for me.
Thanks in advance and see you in game!

Do you want to be able to FD? If so, eliminate warrior. Want to be able to carry loot? If so, eliminate monk.

Iksar Monk is my vote.
SK has some great utility spells though, and any spell overlap is not a bad thing.
Warrior would be a great end game tank option. warrior dps isn't bad with the right weapons.

Warrior is a super fun class to level. Especially with a Shaman duo partner!!

First read this. Loraen's Class Selection Guide (https://wiki.project1999.com/Loraen%27s_Class_Selection_Guide)
Then assess your own level of determination. Do you know yourself well enough to determine if you can tough out the 60 grind? Maybe you know you're highest level has always been 44. Pick a class with level consideration in mind. 60 chanter and shaman dominate, for example.
SK and Monk bring different things to the table. SK can feign pull, even better at lvl 60, but are low on the DPS spectrum. Monk obviously king puller but not a great tank. With slow/torpor that my change... if you make it that far.
Otherwise, consider if you would rather do pickup groups or solo or both. You'll find that no matter which route you go, both will have their unique challenges. And just because a solo camp exists, doesn't mean its uncamped.
Good luck!

Monk shaman is really the quintessential duo in EQ. Good choice picking the master race.

Hello GuyJustin,
the Monk Shaman Combo is still one of the best setups if you just want to duo! Monks have a high DMG output, can Tank more or less and Single pull after some training with the FD Skill! Shm can Slow, Haste buff and take care of Adds with Root so those 2 are in my opinion the best duo team in Everquest 1 (Classic).

monk would be the wise choice.
warrior if you are a narcassist and want to look pretty (that is unless you pick an iksar)
sk if you are a hard core roleplayer.

Decide what your plans are first.
Want to tank groups and one day tank dragons? Go warrior.
Want to be the easiest group tank to play? Go SK.
Want to be a pseudo-tank/puller for groups? Go monk.
Coupled with a shaman nearly any class will succeed easily, it all comes down to how you like to play and what your plan is for yourself.

I feel like the server needs more ppl willing to put up with being a warrior.... Sucks on the front end. But it's alot like shaman if you get thru to the end (torpor and epic) then as a warrior (good gear) you will be in higher demand than the countless monks on the server

warrior if you are a narcassist.
The class that protects you all from certain death with willpower and determination is anything but narcissistic. We are Norrath’s last line of defense from the moon cats.

so like a warrior is like the narcissist that has lots of friends, the ranger is the narcissist that has none. :D also the ranger is dressed with mostly cubic zirconium compared to the war's diamonds and gold ;)

As someone who mains a warrior, I’m biased. The journey in the beginning is pretty rough, especially not being twinkled out well with weapons, jboots, haste, etc. You really hit your stride in the 50s though, if you can tough out the beginning.
I really like playing an SK in the lower levels. The amount of utility and FD are a blessing.
Choose whatever makes you happy. Personally, I love being a warrior and tanking everything.

some fine advice in this thread already.
My 2 cents:
SK: I like sk's alot but the problem is that they are fairly weak in the spectrum of power. You have to rly enjoy the class. Sk i would rank the class that depends on reaching lvl 60 the most. (Sk is viewed as tank / FD able puller, but you wont be able to experience the 2nd of these at its full potential until reaching lvl 60). Basically paladin is better all the way through from lvl 9 to 59.
Monk: monk is probably the most played melee type (I think slightly more populated then rogue). You have to ask why this is the case, and I think it is mostly because they are the most solo viable melee. (mend, fd, 70% bandage, high dps) the only big downside to monk is they are harder to walk around on then other classes due to weight restrictions.
Warrior: You either love it or hate it, but the slow grind of the warrior can be fun and rewarding. Fun because the simple nature of leveling the warrior in groups means you don't have to work as hard for the xp. (once you found a group at least) Fun because tank, more hp, more ac, can take more risks then other classes and not wind up dead as fast. The main problem I see with the war goes unmentioned in these forums tho, and that is this: every guild has 3 main tanks and 7 more high lvl warriors who could pick up the torch already should they decide to quit. at 60 you only need 1 warrior, or 3 for raiding, where as Any other class extras are fine and useful.
