View Full Version : Did I just go properly blind?

I would never have played a human on live because they can't see for shit. So, wasn't racial sight never a thing on p99? Anyway, just a few moments ago I was running across LOIO with my human and everything went dark like I was trying to run through BB with a Barb back in 1999.

Did something just happen or do I not ride on the full sized bus?

I play as a Barbarian occasionally and I always thought that the P99 darkness wasn't nearly as bad as on Live. I remember actually getting lost years ago in the dark and I can't see that ever happening to me nowadays. Maybe it's just because I know the zones better as an adult, but I can't help but think that the gamma isn't quite the same as it used to be.

Short buses are more fun, anyway.

P99 darkness is weak ass shit

Your settings might be jacked up because humans can see almost perfectly even in the dead of night on P99

I've lowered my eq gamma to like 10 or 20% across the board to try and get back ye Olde Dark

I'm playing on a mac and it's unbearably dark on my human monk.

P99 dark is very clear.

Back on live, playing a human or barb, with no vision spell/item, you'd be literally blind in the night. You'd only see the gleaming eyes of a skeleton when it was close enough to bash your face in already.

Yeah, there was an actual reason people picked toons with nightvision. Dark elves were king for a reason.

When I had p1999 running off a Mac in 2013, the lighting was pretty close. Would be cool to see this working.

Sounds to me like some GM decided to have some fun with you and dim your lights remotely. GMs can hide and follow you around, doing all kinds of mischievous things.

I have had weird things like this happen too, unnatural strange worldly occurrences where there are simply no rational explanations to be found except, a GM did it.

I remember on live when it first came out that even with a wood elf my vision was crap at night compared to a dark elf. On P99 I see fine at night even with a human.

Monitors were trash back then too.

When I first played EQ as a Barbarian, my first few play sessions were confined entirely to Halas. Between learning the nuances of swimming, getting lost/stuck in the completely dark tunnel to Everfrost, and accidentally attacking guards, I wasn't sure EQ was for me.

Then a kind soul bestowed on me a torch. Walking out onto that snow packed ground with only my torchlight providing a small sphere of illumination was absolutely incredible. I still get chills thinking about those early days.

Has a lot to do with the client. For example, TAKP uses the old EQMac client so humans are legit blind and wood elven vision at night turns everything bright orange, but Titanium doesn't do any of that.

That said, Telin did manage to adjust it a while back so you CAN be blind as a human provided you lower your gamma.

IMO someone like Secrets needs to spend a couple days binge-hacking Titanium/dsetup.dll for more classicness.

I have a memory of bluish hue with Ultravision and max visual range, wood elf sight had reduced distance.

This may have more to do with it than we occasionally think of. I wouldn't even know where to find an early 00's model CRT monitor. Goodwill doesn't even hoard that garbage anymore.

Hmm (https://youtu.be/87tiT16BZf0?t=7m45s)

I agree there are differences. The game was designed during the CRT era.

Flat panel monitors are not known to produce the best true blacks which may account partially for the difference we remember.

Hrm. My 17" viewsonic CRT still works fine. I could test and see if it looks any different from my more modern displays. This is the same one I used back in '99 and I remember being completely lost the first time I zoned into EC at night as a human. I never played a DE but I do remember infravision (as opposed to ultra) having a reddish tint to it at night as someone previously mentioned.

It'll be a few days as I have to wait for the HDMI -> VGA adapter I just ordered to arrive.

As far as I'm concerned, CRT monitors always seemed to produce better image quality in dark settings than LCD's, at least in the same price category.

Pretty sure it was simply tuned up by SOE as QoL improvements.

I think this might show Ultravision at night.. violet hue (http://uenaelar.forumauberge.com/htm/us/zoom/chap006/zoom02.htm) and another example. (http://uenaelar.forumauberge.com/htm/us/zoom/chap004/zoom02.htm)

Your eyes glow violet

My human ranger back in the day used Eyes of the Cat (https://wiki.project1999.com/Eyes_of_the_Cat) and then later Chill Sight (https://wiki.project1999.com/Chill_Sight)

..which reminds me. Ultravision was cold while other visual ranges were warmer, supporting Sorns observation.

The Titanium client has a brightener effect for outdoor areas which automatically switches itself on a few seconds after a player logs in. Sometimes this effect glitches out and fails to engage, leaving the game world much more similar to classic, although still different since neither Ultravision nor Infravision, nor night-time in general work properly here. However, we don't really want proper night blindness since light sources (lightstones, lanterns, etc) also quite often glitch out on this client and at times refuse to work.

Bottom line, you're not going to get true classic vision on the Titanium client.

The automatic brightening feature does not apply to indoor zones, so zone into a dark zone like Befallen as a human and wander around without a lightsource if you want to see some pitch-dark areas.
