View Full Version : Hi y'all! (~13.5yr afk) Fave EQ Classic memories?

GoD came out, didn't like the direction the game was heading so quit, joined the Navy, saw the world, played lots of other MMOs (WoW, EQ2, Guild Wars, AOC, LOTRO, ESO, SWTOR, etc.), got married, "retired" from Navy, got nostalgic, found out about P1999, and figured why not?
I haven't picked a class yet, just mostly lurking on forums reading and trying to decide what I'm most interested in. Thought I'd drop a line to say hello to everyone!
Favorite EQ memories:
1. Has Anybody Here Seen My Corpse?
2. My introduction to MMOs was via EQ; it was a gift to our family for Christmas. *I* was the lucky kid who got to play it first. However, at that point all of my gaming experience was with consoles. So, while trying to get to Freeport, my brand new Erudite got stuck on the docks of Odus. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to open the darned doors! Finally, after 30min of pressing every key on the keyboard and trying every command I could think of -- a la Zork style -- I rage quit and reported to the family that the game was useless and ought to be exchanged for a better one. Little brother and sister got on and figure out in less than three minutes that you gotta click on the door with the mouse.
Anyone else care to share?

GoD was the impetus for you to join the armed forces?

Nah I graduated from high school between the two and that required life choices. I believe I'd moved onto WoW before I joined, IIRC. I joined because I didn't know what else to do with my life and didn't want to randomly throw away money on college when I didn't feel truly committed to going.

GoD is probably the raid expansion that's the most hardcore of any raid system in any mmorpg that will ever exist? because they keep getting dumbed down ever since then.

Some of my favorite old school memories were being able to give coin and items to NPCs to great effect. Many laughs to be had watching newbies loot that magical rat worth 1000 copper pieces, slowing them to a dead halt, or watching Fippy Darkpaw go to town with a Short Sword of the Ykesha.
I didnt have a computer that could run EQ when it was released. I had to play on my brother in law's computer under his account. I would only get to play on the weekends when he didnt want to play or needed a break from playing. He was super OCD and didn't like having my characters on his account, so every time i logged off and left his house, he would delete my character. I was torn to shreds the first day he deleted my epic level 5 human monk with 2 rusty warhammers. I had more level 5 monks within the first few months of the server then anyone else likely did.
Then i bought a new computer and the rest is history :)
Welcome to the server!

You open a door by saying "hello sailor". Duh.
I started EQ because my D&D group was all playing it and they were like "we can do this together now". I resisted and resisted but one day I finally broke down and got it. Totally noobed it up, drowing in Qeynos by the bank, accidentally giving my buddy's prized FS mace to some random char and not knowing it wasn't him. After a week I restarted with a fresh char (a DE SK) and before long I had greatly outpaced my friends and never looked back. Went on to have countless adventures raiding hard up until GoD sometime.

played lots of other MMOs (WoW, EQ2, Guild Wars, AOC, LOTRO, ESO, SWTOR....
I also left SWTOR, last MMO I played since coming back to P99.
I went back to SWTOR also for about 1-2 years, came back to P99.
Everytime I go back to SWTOR it's worse than it was when I left the game, so sad. :(
Anyway, welcome home. :)

My earliest memory was first discovering the boat to the rest of the world on my Erudite Magician. I was very young and didn't talk to anyone else, I was mid 20s before I realized there were zones outside of Odus. This was very early Luclin, maybe even around launch.
My best memories are from Planes of Power ironically. Though it was the beginning of the end of Everquest, I really didn't see it like that at the time and absolutely loved the raid content. Flagging for more difficult zones on my Barb Warrior was a blast.

Thanks for the welcomes, y'all! Love the stories!
GoD is probably the raid expansion that's the most hardcore of any raid system in any mmorpg that will ever exist? because they keep getting dumbed down ever since then.I'm all for casual games! But sometimes you just want to be able to work for something and get rewarded for it. EQ did that really well. As I was playing last night all those bloody tooltips kept coming up and after my first death it read, "You've died! But since you're below level nine, you don't have to go back and get your stuff!" I laughed at that. Even EQ isn't what it was when it started. Gotta grow with the times I guess. (And I should probably install that Velious UI)
Everytime I go back to SWTOR it's worse than it was when I left the game, so sad. :( I started playing SWTOR when it first came out; the economy was so bloody broken I just flat out stopped playing. Found out about six months ago that my brother in law played it off and on so I tried it out again. They seemed to fix the major economic issues but all of the servers were deserted. I lasted a couple weeks before it got boring. Community makes a huge difference in MMOs!
I also had a stint in FPS's, but that didn't last nearly as long. The community there is absolutely terrible.

One of my first great memories was starting a Barbarian Warrior but my buddy was playing a halfling, and he was too scared to make the trip to Halas so I had to be the brave one (and it was more "roleplay" for my character to do it than his lol, being a warrior and all when he was just a tiny hobbit) and find a way accross the continent.
I died countless times on the way and lost my whole equipment a few times as well, until I found out one of the merchants sold Torches (night on a barbarian in classic was crazy pitch black o_o) so i killed ice goblins, saved up for one and that was the one piece of upgrade i needed to complete my quest! At level 3 or so now and basically naked with a Rusty Sword and a Torch I made it to Rivervale with some help from casters on the way for invisibility or other shenannigans :)
I was very very proud to be the only barbarian in Rivervale and when the happy music started and all the little hobbits were starring at me amazed I was hooked ^^/

The cleric was out of mana....
The ranger said manana.....
Hahaha.
Welcome back dude.
I highly recommend a mage or necro to get back into the swing of things.
I've been debating rolling a monk if you wanna get together with someone on your first toon. PM me if so!

Oh can you spare some ray-shuns 'cause I sure need a drink? (Happy Saturday everyone!)
Ironically, I made a necro as my "remember what the game is like" toon. I've always gone with the "good" races, so this time I went for an Iksar. Should be interesting. New adventures incoming!

On the Discord server, I had a halfling get Donnie Brasco'd. Got to level 6, and as soon as I hit 6, the guys I was grouped with both attacked me. (PVP flagged at 6 on that server, pvp kills permadeath and corpse loot)

I started playing EQ in September of 1999, then putting it down towards the end of 2002. One of my favorite memories was starting with a HUM WAR in Qeynos. The first time I zoned into West Karana was frightening. It was around 2AM local time, so it was dark outside, as well as in the game.
I don't like spiders. Thinking that everything in West Karana was out to kill me, I hid in a hut, scared for my life. After I didn't hear anything for a few minutes, I left the hut and walked around. I then began to hear the dreaded sound that the spiders make. Turning around was the worst thing I did in game at the time, as there he was, a red eyed giant spider. I may have yelled.
I'm also back after a long hiatus, logging about three weeks so far. The game and community is great and I'm having a lot of fun. Welcome back.

The first time I played EQ I created a human ranger, since that's what I'd played in D&D. Back then you started in Surefall Glade and it was nighttime when my character landed. I couldn't see a thing and stumbled around blindly for a bit, fell into the pool, couldn't figure out how to get out (or to swim) and eventually drowned.

Hmm, not sure what your question is haha - but no necro nope, and that was on Tholuxe Paells :)

Wow, almost an identical story happened with me. But instead of the Barbarian making the trek to the halflings they made it to Nektulos only to learn Darkelfs don't like barbarians. lol

Haha same here man. I played a bit here and there in high school. Then tried community college, decided wasn't for me. Ended up joining Marines for 5 years.

Hehe Narzugon, I'm sure it is a relatively common story or variation of :) after all, one of the specific thrill in EQ that most games don't do anymore is the traveling aspect and how it really used to make you feel like you accomplished something when you reached some far away city for the first time !

Hey man welcome. Your timeline actually sounds pretty similar to mine. I originally got Velious in December 2000 when I was 16 and in high school. At the time I had never played an online game before. I didn't realize you needed base EQ to play the game. As I was looking at Christmas ads in the paper I saw Fry's Electronics had Base/Kunark & Velious on sale so I picked that up and eventually finally started playing. I rolled a High Elf paladin and promptly drowned in the moat near the entrance to town.
I had an old PC and dial up internet at the time. Gfay was a bustling zone and somehow I made my way to Kelethin and eventually Crushbone. My new friends showed me how to turn in orc belts in Kaladim, and eventually took me on the boat to Freeport - that was EPIC. When Luclin came out, my PC couldn't handle it. I didn't realize you could turn off Luclin graphics, so I got a new computer instead and begged my parents for high speed internet.
As others have said, although PoP marked the beginning of the end, that is where I really came into my own, as I had graduated high school in 2002 and could devote a lot more time to playing EQ instead of going to community college. My best memories include finally beating RZTW for EP flagging, and dropping Fennin Ro on our first try with 80+ people not that we were zerging, but just that level of excitement at being EP flagged. Then of course continuing on with Time and then into GoD. By the time Dragons came out it was time for me to hang it up.
But obviously this game has a hold on us which is why this server is here and all of us are here, so welcome back to EQ my friend!

Entering crushbone back in classic era and making friends with other wood elf characters, starting a guild from scratch and vowing later on to always stick together and never join the bigger guilds
All fell apart and server forum type drama ensued
Pretty much the same as what used (?) to go on here!

Got eq early 2000 before Kunark released. Remember being on the edge of my chair when I zoned into Unrest for the first time, seeing the corpses at the zone in mixed with the sounds of groaning undeads.

One of my favourite memories of original eq was the time I was playing my first char, a barbarian warrior, and a lvl 55 shaman buffed me up in EC tunnel. I ran out to the orc highway and soloed a red con orc. Felt ultra badass.

One of my favorite memories from old skool Live EQ was actually a completely horrible experience and I probably should have quit over it.
I was fucking around in Kedge Keep with my mage who was probably about 57 at the time (Luclin was not fully on the radar yet). I had bound myself at the entrance and made the mistake of drinking a little bit too much [real] whisky...
Fast forward some time later as I'm waking up from a drunken snooze. The number of corpses at the zone entrance was unbelievable... I'd passed out at the keyboard for some unknown amount of time and de-leveled from 57 all the way down somewhere into level 53 from a death loop of endless drowning. I left Kedge Keep hoping that no one would enter that zone and see my mess for at least a full week.
Exciting! :p

When I started my first toon, back when the game first came out, I didn't fully understand PVP, so I made my Necro red. I played past 50, never being buffed/healed/rezzed, and not really seeing many other red players on E'ci. They finally implemented where GMs could change you back to blue. I petitioned, a GM summoned me to a zone, we had a quick duel, then I was blue. Finally getting buffed/healed/rezzed was such a change.
I wouldn't change it though, the extra challenge made the game more fun.

I had so many really great moments playing from the first week the game went live until I quit in late 2001 to play DAoC.
Probably the most satisfying was breaking Fear with five toons (and the cleric was a bot!) on Povar a few months before Kunark came out. Most of the folks on the message boards thought we were lying and Furor claimed they did it, too. So funny how uberguilds even on different servers tried to one up each other. Part of what made the game really great that first year.
