A radioshow host kind of eulogized Hef saying that he played a large part in the "sexual revolution", starting his magazine in the '50s (picture Ward Cleaver sneaking a Playboy into the house) and led to his magazines own demise by mainstreaming porn. The "classy" topless photos gradually gave way to all the specialty graphic porn we have today. We went from sex being something no one really talked about to it being one of our favorite topics.

And the articles... seriously... Playboy articles were good. Some of the interviews were iconic and changed our nation (the Jimmy Carter interview was brought up as an example).

As an older creeper I had to agree with the radiohead on the first time we saw naked boobs... was in Dad's hidden Playboy. Yeah, now with the internet and an unleashed cable tv naked boobs are everywhere and you younger studs will just scoff at Playboy. But for the generation before you Playboy was the only "porn" we really had.

You can grumble about Hefner being a flesh merchant, or sigh that Playboy was way too tame/lame, or whatever your own morality makes you think of him. But I'd much rather be in a world that's not so puritanical that the sight of Janet Jackson's nipple or Kim Kardashian's naked caboose causes people to faint or go blind.
