I was reading a thread here where people were saying Robin Williams and some of his family members played eq/p99! I guess Robin played a wood elf ranger. I don't know why, but now I'm super interested to learn of any other big names that have stomped around Norrath!

The only other one I have to add is i heard MLB player Curt Schilling was a pretty hardcore eqer.

I'm fairly certain RW played on live back in the day, not P99. He may have family members who do, but I doubt we'll ever really know if that's true.

But... here is a collection of famous people who were on live:

Yeah I googled before I posted hoping to find a list, but only found that thread. And uh yeah it didn't really have the greatest information.

Didn't they take a ton of money in government subsidies then go bankrupt or something?

Not quite related as there seems to be quite a shortage of info, but predictably WoW's creators were former EQ players, and Tryndamere from League of Legends is named after the creator's EQ character.

Todd Pratt, Doug Glanville, and Curt Schilling from MLB all played EQ. I know Curt played EQ2 as well, because he was Ngruk on Unrest.

Curt Schilling is based as fuck, he endorsed Donald Trump, played the market in EQ2, and is generally an upstanding guy just because he doesn't pretend to be nice like most EQ players do. His company went bankrupt because he brought in an all-star team for his studio, and lost most of his personal funds in the process in addition to bankrupting Rhode Island. But hey, you can't blame a man for having crazy dreams that fail.

I told my mom that I was grouping with Curt Schilling on EQ2 before. She was amazed that anyone else even bothered with games like that.

X-Men 1 and all its variant covers forming a mural was awesome. I have them framed on my wall and was able to come by a Jim Lee signed copy on the Collossus/Rogue/Psylocke/Gambit cover.

Depends how you define "successful"

I have personally known more than 2 dozen lawyers/drs/engineers/PHDs who played/play eq including p99. If your definition of "successful" is limited to celebrity status - I only know of RW.

When I was in college, Ben Stein was the keynote speaker at my university's state-of-the-university address.

He spent a solid 35 minutes ranting about Everquest. Now, I know that EQ basically destroyed his son's life, and I don't necessarily disagree with him about the harmful effects of playing EQ all the time. But, this was in 2010 and he was addressing a room full of mostly 18-22 year olds. I'm 100% certain I was one of maybe 4 or 5 people in that room who even knew what EQ was. If he had mentioned World of Warcraft, I think his point would have been more accurately conveyed.

He spent the rest of his time pandering to southerners and defending Richard Nixon.

It was a weird night.

I cannot imagine MJK ever wasting time on something like a MMORPG. Not that I consider it a waste of time - nothing you enjoy spending time on is ever a waste. But it seems like the antithesis of who he is as a person, based on his life, his upbringing, his memoir, and every (serious) interview he's ever done on how he operates and creates.

What happened to Ben Stein's son? Did he get pixel fever?

He didn't off himself after he lost his corpse like that one dude, did he? Google search yields no results related to Tom Stein's EverQuest habits.

MJK is one of my favorite artists alive now. Music-wise I think he has only gotten better particularly if you consider what he is producing with his band Puscifer.

Puscifer's cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" has got to be the best cover of this song, ever. The video also is supremely entertaining! (link of video of Youtube below)

"It's a game. But it's a game that's a dangerous game. This one is different. This one is so intoxicating, so seductive," he says.

Ben Stein says his son regularly stayed up all night playing. "It was as if he had a demon living inside him. I mean, it was as if he had some kind of evil spirit living inside him," he says.

Jeff Kaplan and Marc Merrill were both leaders of large guilds in Everquest. Jeff is the lead designer for Overwatch and Marc Merrill co-founded League of Legends. Not your typical celebrities but they're both definitely celebrities in the communities in which they occupy. They're also rich as fuck.

As long as you're distinguishing between played vs excelled then sure. But "celebrity" is a super relative term.

But to generalize down to high-earners I know that sit in the 1-10% income bracket (250k+) per year:
-I don't know many that game in general
-I know a few that might log on occasionally here and there
-I don't know any that would conceive of logging in at 4am to kill a boss or sit at a spawn for several hours/days

There are also dozens of engineer/science-types on P99 that have flexible schedules.
