A question about this skill, i seem to remember on live you could train on green con monsters with this skill, atm i have 17 skill all bought and cant raise it at all, havent tryed on blue+ monsters as it would prolly be bad for a rogue to do :)

My rogue has only been able to skill up on mobs I can get exp from. I intimidated orc pawns all over commons without a single skill up (was funny as heck to watch though). I instead tried on blue mobs and it started to skill up. I have been able to proc my serated bone dirk and use intimidate to solo certain blue mobs now - and have my intimidation skill maxed for my level. Having never played a rogue on live, I assumed this is how it is intended to work - although pick pocket can be skilled up on greens. I did find conversation that states you should be able to skill up on anything targetable - but I have not found that to be the case:

I did my skill ups on yellows/reds in groups. You will get skill ups and it won't work. Win/Win.
Until you get very high skill and then once in a blue moon it will work on a yellow con Sonic Bat and scare the shit out of you and your group expecting a train.

Im having a hard time wrapping my brain around this skill being instant in live...i distinctly remember clicking intimidate/instill doubt and a good 6 seconds later or so AFTER the graphic was done would the skill either work or fail, and get the message saying so. I cant find any forums or confirmation of this. Am i going crazy?

Originally Intimidate was a display of moves and a chance of the mob running away at the kick near the end. No fear skulls and I don't think it even said "soandso is very afraid."
The version here is instant Intimidate and then the moves are displayed as well as the Fear spell effect.

Evidence (later than 2000) of Intimidate even working on greens and pretty much any sort of target

*You can get skill ups on anything, even inanimate objects. I've gotten
skill ups from intimidating corpses and boats. The rate of skill increase
is extremely slow though. I do not know if there is a better chance of
skill increase if you are successful or not, but it raised very slowly for
me.
*Also perhaps worthy of note, I did successfully get an Intimidate skill up
during a duel. So it clearly doesn't follow the rules for other melee
skills...
Actual mechanics which does seem to include "flees in terror" as an emote and indication of a fear spell (not sure on this):
-Click Intimidate
-You have a chance of a skill up at this point.
-A few seconds pass, during which you engage in amusing gymnastics.
It's also worth noting that you can change targets during this time.
-Then there is a check against something, and you have another chance of a
skillup, and one of three or four outcomes:
a) 'you're not scaring anyone' or 'you can't intimidate yourself!', if
you happened to end up with yourself as the target, or if your
original target died during the interim. In the first case, you
failed the intimidation check. In the second, I don't think it does
a skill check.
b) Target out of range. That means you -succeeded- but the mob wasn't
close enough to appreciate your efforts. But you can get a skillup. :)
c) Target has resisted your fear spell. That means you succeeded, but
then it did an MR check, and you still suck. :)
d) non-melee for XX damage, mob flees in terror. Congratulations, you
did it. :) The non-melee does seem to imply that a kick is involved.

No, this is perfectly accurate. There was a significant delay before the kick fired, and if the kick didn't land (which is often didn't, as we don't have any kick skill) then the fear didn't proc. I haven't tried it on here yet, but if it is instant, it's wrong.

Yeah. It's very different' than live. As mentioned many times before, the check was at the end of the animation with a kick.
Also, on live, you could skill up on anything you could target, even if it was across the zone. I used to run around and ID stuff when traveling from zone to zone. As I was running, I would just make sure to have something else targeted besides myself and mash intimidate.
Skilling up really shouldn't be an issue, however. It skills very fast.

Right now the skill acts as though it's a spell with a resist. In trouble? Press intimidate! It used to require the whole animation and then they would fear making it not instant and unreliable.

Anyone else have vague memories of even skilling up on corpses?
I definitely remember it not "casting" until the kick, which you could miss. I've been seeing resists some now too, but I don't remember if that was like on live or not.

You could skill up on anything you could target.
You didn't have to be in range.
Resists only existed if it were immune or it just didn't work (You're not scaring anyone).
i can confirm it worked on corpses, also worked on any PCs and their pets, regardless of distance. It also worked on the boat !
and as far as skill ups go, since it didn't have to be successfull to skill up (like when you would be doing it on a mob half across the zone, or a pet, or a player) it would skill up based on USE, regardless of what you were using it on.
HERE on p99: best bet is to go to a city, use it on red guards, it will never work, so you can skill up all the way on that. or find any other non-kos mob thats yellow/red to you.
