View Full Version : Best guitar player Live or dead. I say John Pettruci

The truth is,

John Pettruci isn't just pro at guitar. He writes beautiful music. Although this was hard for me to decide from. Such as Satriani , Hendrix, Vai , etc I feel Pettruci style is very unique.

Its hard to say "Best" because music is subjective and style is a big factor so I'll just say my favorites as of this moment are...

Buddy Guy for blues guitarist. Michael Romeo for progressive rock.

oh, and Michael Angelo Batio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rk46UvfjTYM) for laughs.

If we're going with not only being a pro-guitarist but also a poet, how can we forget Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, George Harrison from the Beatles (rhythm not lead), and Clapton? Let's be honest, Jimi is a phenomenal guitarist, but I'd turn my head a bit before I called it poetic.

Vaughn is a definite.

Dream Theater would be a much better band if they weren't so gay. Petrucci is damn good, a great gear man, but I'm sorry, the singer from Dream Theater makes me want to kill the whole band.

Best Live Guitarist: Shawn Lane, specifically his work with Jonas Hellborg and Jeff Sipe.

Check out Hellborg Lane and Sipe - Temporal Analogues of Paradise

Other Favorite Guitarists:
Jason Becker
David Gilmour
Jimmy Page
SRV
Jimmy Hendricks
Randy Rhoads
Clapton (with Derek and the Dominos and Cream)
Zappa
Warren Haynes (of Gov't Mule and now The Allman Brothers Band)
Jerry Garcia
Dimebag
Mike McCready (of Pearl Jam, yuk yuk)
Jonny Greenwood, back when he used to rock (Pablo Honey through Ok Computer, pretty much)
Steve Winwood
Paul Gilbert

To me playing the (electric) guitar is 25% style, 25% noise, 25% music, and 25% heart.

I have to study for a midterm but I hope we can keep this thread going as it is awesome!

BIG thumbs up on Django!

Familiar with Joe Bonamassa (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SMjL5u5D40)at all?

Personally, I'm sentimentally attached to Garcia, Hendrix and Vaughn (must be my middle-aged white guys biases showing themselves) but, really, this is a bit like asking which beer is your favorite - the choice of simply one is too much to make!

It goes with out saying, though that none of us would be able to have this discussion without Les Paul (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AP7qI5RVtxw). We owe it all to him.

Mine would have to be Marty Friedman. Very underated guitar player. Tornado of souls solo is sooo beautiful. Reminds me of a living Randy Rhoads in a certain way.

Malmstein is ok very talented in shredding , but everything sounds similar. He reminds me of Zakk Wyld. Very skillful can play anything , but can't write solos worth shit. I like my guitar players not only to play well , but to write good shit as well. Listen to Joe Satriani song Rubina < beautiful song>

Hands down the best guitarist, the way he throws this down-tempo rhythm into the drumming is head slamming awesome.

The guitarists mentioned above are good I guess, but more from a "let's clap for them because they're technical" sort of way and to me I find that boring because it's flat... besides

Let me just say this about Yngwie:

Yngwie is easy to hate. He is a huge fucking douchebag. He puts Ferrari stickers on his Strats. I think they help him play faster or something...

I am not old enough to have legit listened to Yngwie Malmsteen in the 80s. I came to know him when I got into the electric guitar and turned to Youtube to satisfy my thirst.

Watching Youtube it is extremely easy to hate Yngwie. He's such a pudgy self-righteous bastard. He wears a ridiculous amount of bling. I'm usually wishing there was more gratuitous guitar playing in a song, but when I watch Yngwie on Youtube, it's just too much. I get burned out on harmonic minor so fast listening to Yngwie.

Maybe Yngwie always was a douchebag, but he wasn't always such a douchebag musically. If you've only given Yngwie a chance on Youtube, try out some of his earlier studio efforts. Before I got into rock music I was a devout classical fan (and player). Yngwie, for a while, did the whole neo-classical shred thing with a lot of heart and talent. I found his studio work to be a lot more convincing and compelling.

Check out this music video to see how hard he used to rock!
http://www.rocktube.us/bgll757Nf0T/Yngwie_Malmsteen_I_ll_See_The_LIght_Tonight.html

The weirdo singer you see there is Jeff Scott Soto, some Steve Perry replacement nowadays.

At this point I don't know what to say about Yngwie. Remember when he did G3 in 2003 with Satriani and Vai? Lol, that was a match made in hell.

Well, I have to go do laundry. I'm going to spur some more electric guitar conversation when I get back.

If you're talking about like "stunt" guitar playing, I think Vai beats MAB. Unfortunately, they're both fags. Vai probably has everyone (except Shawn Lane) beat in sheer ability, he just usually chooses to play his guitar like a stupid self-absorbed little bitch. MAB is pretty good technically, yes, but he is pretty much the most unconvincing guitarist I've ever heard. That's why no one except some metal kids from the 80s and guitar weirdos have ever heard of him. You can play two guitars at the same time, MAB, good for you. Unfortunately, no matter how many guitars you play, you will never have any heart. You are a machine. MAB always kind of reminded me of Moe from Calvin and Hobbes with those stupid bangs.

*edit*
I think Jason Becker, had ALS not taken him in his prime, would go down in history as the greatest shredder ever.

I thought about mentioning Eddie Hazel, but I don't know, have you ever tried listening to the entire Maggot Brain album? Eddie can rock out, but that sort of funk is just a little too ridiculous sometimes. Eddie is all heart, and in that regard he sort of lacks a little bit of depth muscially I think.

Also, I think that since Cribanox seconded my opinion on Jason Becker, we should at least mention Michael Lee Firkins since he is Jason's chosen player. Michael Lee Firkins playing on the Jason Becker album (from after he was pretty much paralyzed) Persepctive is sublime.

This type of discussion always gets bogged down by genre divergence. Some guitarists can't be compared with each other. While I'm ITT again, I'm gonna point out that no one mentioned Buddy Guy. He is still the best blues guitarist around, and hes like 80 something. See him before he dies, especially if you can see him playing with another big name guitarist, since competition brings out a mean streak in him and he plays angry like no one else.

Since this thread seems to be open to just awesome guitar players and not who you think is best, Ill put in somebody I don't think has been mentioned.

Christopher Arp, especially because of his great use of odd time signatures and dissonance / odd keys and key changes. They wouldn't let him in Limp Biskit or however you spell that abonimation of a band because he was too good :p

Look up "Imogen's Puzzle pt.2" (homage to this hilarious old game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imogen_(video_game)), I think) if you want to listen to something that doesn't do damage to the eardrums, but "Death, I" has a great intro some sweet transitions.

The REAL truth is,

They just aren't heavy enough for my sensibilities , are they talented technically? Yes. Can they ozone your brain from rhythm? Probably not.

Can induce chemical reactions in your brain if you bump the bass high enough

lol this is pretty awesome and it reminds me of Kyuss

Best post on here. My Dad played Dick Dale's version of Riders in the Sky for me when I was about 8 years old, and I immediately understood what "rocks" and what doesn't. Then about 14 years later I see him in concert (which is unbelievable) and tell him, "I've been waiting to hear that song live since I was 8 years old" and he just looks at me for 4-5 seconds not saying anything then says, "You know, that's pretty cool" and then signs my arm. The guy is so cool I am convinced he beat his own rectal cancer out by blowing it out his ass with kickass guitar.

Link Wray is pretty badass too.

Since both of those bands are pioneers of stoner rock of course they'd sound similar, especially since both bands play exclusively through bass amplifiers /w fuzz effects

Damn, didn't even have a chance. Just last night I introduced our next-door neighbor to Procol Harum, which led to Robin Trower, which led to Andres Segovia, which led to Joe Satriani, which led to Eric Johnson.

She'd never heard of any of 'em.

I saw SRV play live back in the day...club called "Black Cats" in Austin. He was awesome...absolutely awesome. I didn't really know who he was back then...in fact no one really did...hence him playing clubs...but he blew everyone away....

Best way to describe him....he had fingers like liquid lightning...watching him play Voodoo Chile was INCREDIBLE!

Not sure if serious. Just in case you were, that name doesn't even belong in this discussion alongside greats like Uli Jon Roth, Shawn Lane, Al DiMeola, Steve Vai, Andres Segovia, etc. Maybe you like his attitude or his songwriting, but his actual playing was nothing special at all.

Really?

REALLY?

Here's an accessible first hit for you, free. His original work is equally amazing.

Quotations about Michael Hedges by other guitarists mentioned in this thread:

"Michael was unique. His music transcends genre and trend. It's truly musical, fun and enlightening.” – Steve Vai

"His playing has a feel and timbre all its own – technically brilliant, but always organic and true." – Joe Satriani

I don't Know who the "best" is or even how you would measure that, but here's my personal fav.
Muhammed Suiçmez

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt-9ZS9ViMo

yes its death metal, not alot of vocals on this vid so give it a try sissies

Chuck Schuldiner of death was a much better musician and songwriter, but not at guitar porn status like Muhammed

I look at Muhammed as a less memorable Jason Becker who does annoying growls on top of things. Jeff Loomis is where it's at for modern metal shredders. He's pretty much the second coming of Becker, same vibrato and everything.

ya Loomis is a badass, but you have to remember that if your a fan of the genre then they're not "annoying growls" and the ability to do vocals while playing the way he does is actually quite impressive.
