View Full Version : EQ Fashion Experts: Teach Me How Fashion Works

TLDR; I'm looking for a breakdown of how to differentiate/group wearable items by their appearance.

Awhile back people requested a fashion site, so I started working on a crawler that could find the fashion data for P99 items. At first I thought it was simple: every item just has an appearance type (eg. "Kunark Chain" for fungi tunic). But then I looked at Allakhazam/Lucy's data, and there it seems every item has three things that could affect its appearance ...

Appearance Type (eg. Chain)
Era (eg. Kunark)
Tint (eg. black, except in RGB form)

So, for instance, an Advisor Robe (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=2087) would have an appearance type of "Crimson Robe of Alendine", an era of "Original", and a tint of "#610d02".

However, I'm not sure if the era is even relevant or not. Some items (eg. fungi tunic) have an appearance type "Kunark Chain", while others just have "Chain". But there are a LOT of "Chain" items, and I don't think they all look the same, which is why I thought the era might matter. I'm also not sure if "Chain (from Kunark era)" is even different from "Kunark Chain", or whether that's just poorly-entered data.

If I was more familiar with items and their appearances I could probably draw some conclusions, but since I've never been big on fashion I can't. So, can any fashion experts explain how many different "axis" of fashion differentiation there are for a given item, and what they are (type/era/tint or type/tint or ?) Also, does anyone have an opinion on the quality of Allakhazam/Lucy's fashion data, or have a suggestion for a better source?

That is very helpful, thanks Poke! Interestingly "material" and "appearance type" seem to correlate highly: for instance all items with material 10 seem to have an appearance type of "Crimson Robe of Alendine".

But that begs the question: are the two the same (ie. one's just the numeric version of the other), or are they somehow different? And if they are different, which should I use? I will definitely need to do some more research into "material".

Oh yes, clearly.

that's new info to me, cool! i've only used it for velious stuff, tint and material seemed all that mattered. i will say this method breaks down for post-velious stuff(monk cloth dropping in shadeweaver's thicket LIES)

kunark chain - ask daldaen or cecily. if anyone knows, it would be them.

On EQEmu, the database takes a numerical value indicating which graphic to display. As expansions were added, the later materials have a higher number because they're appended to the end of the list.

Classic:

0 - cloth
1 - leather
2 - chain
3 - plate
4 - monk leather (yes, monks get their own special graphic)
5 - ?
6 - ?
7 - ? (kunark)
8 - ?
9 - ?
10 to 16 - robe graphics (each robe style has a different number)

Velious:

17 to 23(?) - Velious armor

One more factor in appearance is race, of course.

Iksar had a few special materials (their cultural comes to mind) so that may be a few of them. I'd have to poke around on a test server to find out what each of the numbers belongs to, though. Some seem to be empty.

Regarding chain, you'll have old world chain and 2 types of Velious chain. Kunark didn't have any special armor graphics. They just gave everyone plate armor because.. cocaine.

That's ... inappropriate.

As for everyone else, thanks for all the info! It sounds like fashion isn't nearly as complex as I was fearing: it seems like maybe all I need to worry about is 20 or so materials/appearances and however many tints.

Hopefully with this info I'll be able to finish my crawler this weekend, and then I can start the long process of manually updating every (wearable) item in the wiki to have two new categories: one for its material/appearance and one for its tint.

Then I can add screenshots of each material/tint to their category page (for as many races as possible), and every item will be one click away from a screenshot of how it (or at least an item with the same material or tint) would look. And if anyone wants a certain material/tint look they'll be able to go to its category page to see a list of items with that look.

Kunark chain means chain (third texture) on old world races but the special fourth texture for iksar (because they didn't have a 'proper' plate texture).

Interestingly, if you use SoLuclin models, kunark chain hats appear as plate instead of chain.

Wow, that's very inconsistent ... which is to say, very classic EverQuest :)

I've been working on this recently too for a p99 magelo site.

I've been using a crawler (phantomJS + cheerio) to crawl the p99 wiki for the items API, and crawling allakhazam for texture/color info.

If Cecily was the only person reading your post I'd agree, but you made it in a public (and not RnF) forum. Not trying to make a huge deal out of it or anything, just saying maybe you could keep the "licking clits raw" talk out of Server Chat next time :)

Interesting. I've always thought that'd be a cool site to have, but since the wiki one works reasonably well I never thought anyone would bother to build a better one. Kudos to you for doing it.

I've been going pure Node/HTML string parsing to do my crawling, mostly because I'm lazy (but also because the first crawling library I tried couldn't handle Lucy's redirects).

It's just too bad I didn't finish my project before your's; if I had you wouldn't even need to crawl Alla, you could just get everything from the wiki.

there's a big difference between licking a clit raw and sucking a clit raw

Filbus in his current form.

BEST: Blade of Strategy + Malevolent Runeblade is very Fashionquest. It is, I repeat, VERY fashionable to not wield the Blade of Tactics in Offhand.

WORST: The clash of Ragefire bracers with the Velious arms. This is just PLAIN BAD! I feel shame when I think about this, and wish someone would help me get more aesthetic bracers. But really, I can't be bothered.

As always, Filbus sports the Prime Face of all Hobbitmen.

There has been some confusion about what graphic an item dropped on the frozen continent might have.
Below is a guide on how to best confirm what Appearance an item will have be it Scale, Plate, Chain, etc.

# Look up the Item in question on Lucy using the 'Item Search' field on the left panel.
:: http://lucy.allakhazam.com/
# Check the Appearance section on the right hand side
# Consult the table below with said caveats:
:: Velious Plate 1 = Scale
:: Velious Plate 2 = Plate
:: Velious Chain 1 = Ringmail
:: Velious Chain 2 = Chainmail
:: Velious Leather 1 = Cloth
:: Velious Leather 2 = Leather
:: Velious Monk = The unique monk chest graphic to show off their muscles.

If the description in the Appearance section does not mention Velious then the item has the classic look.
